24.01.2022 When was the last time you checked the expiry dates on the flares on your vessel..? Are yours out of date, and not sure where you can dispose of them? Look no further! We will happily dispose of out of date flares FREE at our base for all members of the boating public! Just bring them down and speak to one of our Duty Crew who will happily assist.

24.01.2022 We would like to say a huge thank you to Brisbane Marine and Mercury Marine Australia & New Zealand for donating some life jackets to the base today! 24.01.2022 Flashback time! Thank you to one of our followers, Todd, for sending this one in. Taken around 1987-‘88 at the launching of the then Coolangatta-Tweed Air Sea Rescue's new rescue vessel "Tweed Bowls 1". For those who aren’t aware, before we became VMR Jacobs Well, our unit was apart of the Air Sea Rescue family, as Air Sea Rescue Beenleigh! ... Has anyone else got any photos from our Air Sea Rescue days? If so, don’t hesitate to send them in!
24.01.2022 Got that one boatie or jetski rider in your life who is hard to shop for when it's Christmas time? Why not get them a VMR Jacobs Well Waterside Assistance Membership? Only $77 for 24/7 coverage for a whole year! Covering from VMR Currumbin through to VMR Bribie Island. This is the perfect gift for those who frequent our waterways! This will cover them for all breakdown tows, jump-starts, and so much more!
23.01.2022 THEFT FROM OUR VESSELS OVERNIGHT - Very unfortunate news this morning, one of our vessels has been broken into over night around 1am by certain persons, and several life-jackets and a fire extinguisher have been stolen. We are deeply saddened that someone would target a volunteer rescue organisation.. If anyone has ANY information, or recognizes the male or the female in the below images, please contact us at the base on 5546 1100 or call Policelink on 131 444.
23.01.2022 Recently we were contacted by the Southport Yacht Club’s Power Boating division, who asked if we could provide a flare demonstration at Dux Anchorage for their members. We are proud to offer such demonstrations upon request to help raise awareness of safety of life at sea, as well as to build confidence in the use of emergency equipment. Thank you to all who made this demonstration possible!

22.01.2022 Thank you to all who attended our Santa Visit today! We hope our volunteers spread some cheer to the local community after the year that has been! Special mention must go to all involved who made this event possible! Without our dedicated volunteers, events like this wouldn’t be possible. Don’t forget, VMR Jacobs Well is still manned 24/7 over the holiday period, don’t hesitate to call us if you require assistance!
22.01.2022 First responders. Ordinary people, just like us. They have families, commitments, homes to go to at the end of their working day. They’ve got dinner to make, shopping to do, bills to pay. But unlike us they dedicate their time to helping save others. Whether it’s the firefighters who battled the infernos that wrought havoc on our nation in 2020, the paramedics who respond every day to emergency situations, the marine rescue teams, police and lifesavers working to find missing... persons in the water, or the SES men and women who leave their own families at home to ensure another family has a roof over their heads, we owe every one of them a huge debt of gratitude (as well as the families who support them through it all). Yet many of Australia’s 300,000 first responders receive little thanks for what they do. We want to change that. June 9, 2021 is Thank A First Responder Day, when we will ask you to join us in saying two simple words: Thank you.

19.01.2022 A great story from Blue Crew on the weekend - The hazards of boating alone, without the proper preparation... On Saturday morning, Jacobs Well Rescue 2 was travelling from Horizon Shores Marina back to base. One of the crew saw a gentleman in the water hanging onto the back of his tender. ... He did not know how long he was in the water but he said he would not have been able to hang on much longer. As he could not get into either the tender or his yacht, and his legs were getting numb. Three VMR JW crew members was able to lift him into Jacobs Well Rescue 2, and took him and his tender back to Horizon Shores. At the time he was not wearing a life jacket but he plans to in the future, now knowing how quickly things you do for years could turn into a life or death situation. A great outcome in the end. Well done to Blue Crew for their quick reaction to the situation which could have ended very differently if not for their crew's awareness on patrol. *Photo not related to actual rescue

18.01.2022 A great video from Marine Area Command - NSW Police Force for checking your on-board fire extinguishers, and how to use them effectively in an emergency!
18.01.2022 This turtle, affectionately named Alf by our crew, needed some assistance on Tuesday. Alf was found by a member of the public, and our guess is that he had possibly had a run in with a boat.. He was brought to our base, and our duty crew contacted the Sea World Research, Rescue & Conservation Foundation who came down and collected Alf with haste. We all have our fingers crossed for Alf! Sea World did say they would keep us updated on his condition, so we will aim to provid...e a follow up if we can! Alfs case is a timely reminder to slow down and keep a proper lookout, not just for other vessels and people, but our precious marine life that share our waterways with us. If you do see a marine animal in distress, contact the base and our duty crew will be able to put you in touch with the right people to assist. Thanks to Josie and the other members of Purple A crew for the photos, and for their excellent response!
18.01.2022 Some more photos from our Crew Meeting on Wednesday night of those crew members who were presented with their new rating epaulettes, and those who received certificates for completing training modules. Congratulations to Gordon for receiving his Crew rating! Congratulations to Cameron for receiving his Competent Crew rating!... And congratulations to both Carey and David on the completion of several training modules!

17.01.2022 Caller Derek was in the Jumpinpin area when this pelican swam up to his boat. The bird had a hook strung with bait lodged on the right side of its face. He phon...ed for help immediately but his information wasn’t passed on to me for hours. Now, with the light fading, any chance of a quick catch was out the window. I’d have to mount a comprehensive search the next day. Given the vastness of the area I might not even find the injured bird. Volunteer Marine Rescue, at Jacobs Well, have been great support whenever I’ve needed to track down a pelican. Next morning, we set off for the Pin in their rescue cat. Hopefully the bird would still be somewhere in the area. But the weather had changed overnight. Disturbed by the gusty sou-easterly change, pelicans were few and far between. We check all of their usual haunts but only located seven pelicans, far fewer than the dozens I’d normally find. It wasn’t looking good. After searching for hours, we decided to give it away. I felt gutted. Then I spotted a single white dot, half a k away, off to starboard. Just one lone pelican, down a remote channel, but worth a look. We spun the boat around. The skipper commented that he’d never seen pelicans in that area before, but as we got closer, they began to appear. Two groups totaling 30 birds. The best part? One of them was our target bird! Tucked in amongst grasses and very wary there was no chance the flock would allow me to approach them on foot. Instead, we hung back and I lured them to the boat. I managed to separate the hooked bird from the others. Five minutes later, we hauled him aboard. To my great relief the injury turned out to be minor. I removed the hook then gave the crew an opportunity for a quick photo before the skipper released the pelican back with its flock, no worse for wear. Thanks again VMR. Great work, as always.
17.01.2022 Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend out on the water! If you have any great snaps from your boating adventures in our local area, feel free to share them with us Our favourites might just even get shared on the page.. Bonus points if anyone snapped our vessels out and about recently!
17.01.2022 Do you recognise this Kayak?
17.01.2022 We would like to express our thanks to the boating public and Paul Weston at the Gold Coast Bulletin for assistance with our recent robbery break-in. This occurred on Friday 4th September, and the two did manage to take some much needed life saving equipment. On Sunday 6th September, our crews were involved in a long and difficult Search and Rescue to recover two people near Russell Island. At the moment, the case is still ongoing with no additional news. If you do recognise ...anyone please let the police know. We are currently fundraising ( https://www.facebook.com/donate/357849868916860 ) for a new Smart TV in the training room at the base as our current one is no longer a real viable option. Unfortunately, we now have to access these funds in order to replace the stolen equipment. Volunteer Marine Rescue Jacobs Well is a 24/7 365 days a year operation manned purely by volunteers events like the break in are disappointing, but we will always continue to protect the boating public. The $77.00 pa Memberships (http://www.vmrjw.org.au/membership/) to our organisation help us to continue doing this and maintain our equipment and base facilities as well as provide you with assistance on the water.
16.01.2022 Buyer beware!! A young family launched their boat today at Jacobs Well for the first time, noticed the 60 hp yamaha was moving around on the transom. This is what they found. If youre not experienced get someone you trust who knows boats to have a look if youre considering buying an older boat.
16.01.2022 For those out there who love fishing, the Tilapia Busters tournament is coming up again soon! Lots of fun for the whole family, while helping remove this introduced pest species from our city’s lakes. It’s a win-win! See the event for more information, and tight lines to all attending!
16.01.2022 At VMR Jacobs Well, we dont just provide waterside assistance to humans... We received a call yesterday from a family just inside Jumpinpin Bar who had found Nigel (Yes, Finding Nemo reference there...) who was in a bit of distress. Nigel had a run in with an abandoned fishing hook it seems. So Rowley from Wild Bird Rescues was on the job with us once again! Rowley managed to catch Nigel quickly, and after we got them back to Jacobs Well safety, Nigel was taken to Curr...umbin Wildlife Sanctuary Hospital to have the hook removed. Thanks again Rowley for all your fantastic work, and we all wish Nigel a speedy recovery! Please, if you are fishing, make sure you dispose of your left over tackle properly to protect our wildlife! Thanks to Josie from Purple A Crew for the photos!
15.01.2022 Because of a Low off the East coast of Australia, the wind speed and wave heights over the next couple of days are forecast to increase in the Gold Coast marine area. Sydney wave data is currently showing 10.5 metre waves.
14.01.2022 Welcome to the weekend weather forecast from Volunteer Marine Rescue Jacobs Well. There is currently large powerful conditions offshore, rock fishing and bar crossings should be avoided. Saturday is going to be very windy, with Sunday being the best of the two days to go out on the water. The shoals in Jacobs Well near Dinner Island have formed again and are creating issues at low tide. When the tide at the Brisbane bar is 0.30m, there is 1 metre of depth at the shoals. Ple...ase take in to consideration that Jacobs Well has a ratio applied to its tides and is not a direct comparison to the Brisbane Bar movements. For further information contact the base on 5546 1100. www.VMRJW.org.au Please consider that our Facebook page is not run by the operational crews at the base, and all enquires should be directed to the radio room which is staffed 24/7 on the number listed above. Thank you See more
13.01.2022 Good evening to all of our followers, VMR Jacobs Well would like to update our followers and members after the recent lockdown restrictions in the Greater Brisbane area. Our Radio Room is still being manned 24/7 by volunteers, and our crews are still available to assist those in need as per our regular services for search and rescues, medical assistance, as well as breakdown assists. ... However, more of our crew are operating on an ‘On Call’ basis away from the base to assist with social distancing, so please have patience with our radio operators and crew members during this time. We expect these changes to have minimal impact upon our rescue services, while also keeping our volunteers safe. Our members will be observing all social distancing and hygiene requirements when on duty, and ask that members of the public please respect this for the safety of our volunteers. Finally, to all of our supporters and members, stay safe! Please follow the latest advice for your area as issued by Queensland Health. If in need of assistance, please contact us on 5546 1100 or VHF Channels 16, 67, 73 or 82.
