18.01.2022 LIFE-SAVING LEGACY Midwest Times 11 Nov 2020 LIAM BEATTY & CAITLYN WATTS... The youngest son of Bob and Jan Oostryck, the couple who died in a boating accident off Coral Bay this year, has spoken about the tragedy five months on and the family’s efforts to heal. Ryan Oostryck, pictured below, said the family wanted to support the efforts of local volunteer marine rescue groups which worked to recover his parents’ bodies. They all worked tirelessly to help, with many of them working through the night . . . we won't forget their efforts, he said. The Oostrycks have raised $50,000 for rescue groups. The family of a couple who died in a boating accident off Coral Bay say the tragedy has brought them closer together uniting them in their mission to celebrate their loved ones and raise thousands for rescuers. Through the fog of grief, the family of Bob and Jan Oostryck were able to raise more than $50,000 for local marine emergency services. Mr and Mrs Oostryck, in their 70s, were on board a 6.1m boat when two huge waves pushed it over near Ningaloo Reef on June 16, knocking them unconscious and trapping them underwater. The accident happened so suddenly there was not enough time to get to the safety equipment on board. Their youngest son, Ryan Oostryck, and his girlfriend Galina tried to resuscitate them, but were forced to make the difficult decision to tie their bodies to the vessel, swim for four hours and walk for a further 2 hours in order to raise the alarm. Mr Oostryck said the family was heartbroken after the accident but had been sticking together and helping each other to work through things. Our parents were truly wonderful people, and were amazing parents and grandparents, he told the Midwest Times this week. They were kind, intelligent, genuine and hardworking. They were always generous with their time and gave back to the communities they lived in. That community spirit has filtered through the family, with the Oostrycks launching a GoFundMe page after the accident to support the emergency service operations in Coral Bay. Five months on, Mr Oostryck said the family was amazed by the more than $50,000 donated to its fundraiser, which he believes proves people want to support the volunteers who look after communities. There have been a number of accidents and incidents in Coral Bay in recent years, he said. We are aiming to buy a new ambulance with the money from our fundraiser . . . ideally, we’d like to see an all-in-one emergency services facility established. The two marine rescue groups involved in the mission to recover Bob and Jan’s bodies Exmouth and Coral Bay were recognised at the recent WA Fire and Emergency Services Awards gala and given the 2020 outstanding group operations award. Exmouth Volunteer Marine Rescue commander Rusty Ellis said while the award win was sensational, what was most special was meeting with the Oostryck family after the awards in Perth. Ryan Oostryck said the award was well deserved and his family extended their heartfelt thanks to the teams involved in the recovery of his parents’ bodies. Several of them knew our parents personally, which would have made it even harder, and we won't forget their efforts, he said.

16.01.2022 RV Gallard and the Iron Pride out for training today at the Spoilbank.

16.01.2022 Marine Rescue Port Hedland responded to a 5m recreational vessel in distress today that was taking on water 5nm offshore. The Iron Pride managed to get the vessel under tow which stopped the water ingress into the vessel. We were able to safely get the persons back to land where we assisted with retrieving the vessel out of the water. This rescue had the potential to end much differently if we had arrived any later than we did as the vessel would have sank due to the large amount of water that it was taking on. A timely reminder to ensure that you perform a thorough pre-start check on your vessel and safety equipment prior to going out to sea to ensure you have a safe day on the water.

15.01.2022 A big shout out to Metso Outotec for their generous donation to the Marine Rescue Port Hedland team. This great community support allows our Not for Profit Emergency Services group to achieve our operational goals of promoting Marine Safety in the community. Thanks again for everything you have done to support our team! We could not do it without you!

05.01.2022 SPOILBANK MARINA DESIGN FINALISED The Spoilbank Marina is a major project that the local Hedland community has wanted to see delivered for a very long time, a...nd I am proud that the McGowan Government is making the dream a reality. As chair of the Spoilbank Marina Community Reference Group, the extensive local community consultation process has expanded the design to include: a four-lane boat ramp; 21 boat-pen marina with capacity to expand to 80 pens in the future; separate entrance channel to the main shipping channel; trailer parking for up to 200 vehicles; maintenance hardstand; publicly accessible breakwaters with pedestrian path; public recreation and event space and public amenities; public fishing jetty; water feature; shade structures at swimming beach; waterfront promenade to reflect the Yintha Kariyarra creation serpent story; and public art and a cultural gathering space. This project will not only give Hedland fantastic boating facilities, but also create a whole new waterfront public recreational space where the Hedland community and its visitors can attend cultural events, markets, or just go to relax.
