22.01.2022 "North Stradbroke 1" gets put into the water from Bribie Island VMR for its Stability Test before sale to a VMR in Tasmania. Thanks to Bribie VMR for supplying 3 men for human ballast and for allowing us to leave our boat in their yard for so long. Thanks also to Bribie Island Towing for using their truck to launch and retrieve.

18.01.2022 Two significant tows in the last week. First a 6am start on Monday for Colin, Allan, Cob and Roger to tow a Haynes Hunter from a couple of nautical miles out at sea through the Middle Passage and to Amity. Then on Sunday with Bravo Crew - Ian, Lynn, Fenella, Cob, John, Geoff and Wayne towing a jet ski all the way from Amity to Paradise Island at Surfers. Two jobs very well done!

18.01.2022 Photographer Grant Booth was at the right place at the right time and captured this amazing sunset, featuring our rescue boat Deranji. "I was down next to the Marine Rescue mooring pontoon at Cleveland Point boat ramps with my camera set-up on the tripod, waiting for the sun to sink a little more to the west. I looked up and spotted the Marine Rescue boat heading towards the mooring and knowing that the vessel was going to pass between my camera and the setting sun, what a ph...oto opportunity one of those moments you could not possibly organise and all I had to do was press the shutter button. The rescue boat belonged to North Stradbroke Island and was transporting a patient to the mainland for medical treatment. After the transfer was completed the crew were very apologetic for interrupting my photo session but I was very grateful for getting a once in a lifetime shot - Thanks guys and thank you for the job you do for the community." Thanks for sharing your photo with us Grant (from Classic Car Portraits). See more

18.01.2022 A dramatic rescue! With a raging South Easterly this 48ft cruiser came off its mooring in Deanbilla Bay and ended up in the pylons at the old Sibelco Wharf. With excellent boat handling skills and team work the crew of Deranji came to the rescue. A great job!

16.01.2022 You may have noticed our antenna tower being inspected today - what a view!

16.01.2022 Yesterday North Stradbroke Island VMR with Bravo crew and Redland City SES combined to carry out a practice search and rescue in Rainbow Channel off Amity. Our rescue vessel Deranji, two Redlands SES flood boats and an SES barge first conducted a line search and when an unconscious but breathing mannequin was located and pulled from the water it was then transferred to Deranji. A successful operation and a great opportunity for our two volunteer organisations to work together!

09.01.2022 171 Medivacs in 2019!! Today Colin, Lynn and I did the first two for 2020.

07.01.2022 Plan and Navigate a Voyage Exercise lat and longs for go to points, bearings, fuel, distances, times, tides, wind, etc. A great opportunity for Alpha Crew to go from One Mile to The Yard up the Brisbane River to retrieve gear left on a cruiser we assisted last Wednesday night on the South Passage. Then upriver to city and take away lattes from Powerhouse. A great day.

05.01.2022 FUNDRAISING YEAR OFF TO A GREAT START WITH BOOKFEST VMR North Stradbroke was thrilled to receive $6500 from the Bookfest held on the first weekend of the New Year at Point Lookout. What an amazing effort from the dedicated book-lovers who organised and ran the successful three day event. Our thanks go to these hard-working volunteers: Jan and Deirdre Mulder, Debra Dunn, Margie Brain, Frank Way, Janet and David Johnson, Vivian McLean, Joan Benham, Verena Oxlee, Cindy Haro...ld, Katie Fraser, Thea Hayes and Bob Black, Jan Dix, Vince and Margaret Bettington, Keiran McCormak and Deb Mogridge from Brisbane. Ann Millett and Lorraine Dekker manned the famous VMR coffee machine. President Roger Slinger and Skippers Richard Dunn, Doug Fraser and Rob Brain also assisted and manned an information stand about VMR activities. Richard did a great job as Meet-and-Greet at the front door. One new member was signed up and many tourists were made aware of our role, especially in medivacs from the island. Thanks must also go the Stradbroke Hotel, Prawn Shack, Starfish Studio and Stuart Patterson for donating raffle prizes. Also to Counsellor Peter Mitchell and the Redlands Council for allowing free use of the Point Lookout Community Hall. Finally, thanks to Tim and Marianne Florin for making space available in their garage at Point Lookout for the storage of books. Donations have also been gratefully received from DOLLS of $1200 and $300 from the Ladies Night Bowling Club. The next Bookfest will be held in September school holidays. See more

05.01.2022 We had a big job last Thursday night. We went to the aid of a 6.5 m disabled half cabin cruiser about 20 Nm off the coast. We towed it in through the South Passage Bar and south to the Eric Early Light near Russel Island where Jacob's Well VMR carried on the tow. 5 hours, 330 litres of fuel and a job well done.

04.01.2022 A fantastic job recently by the Bravo Crew - Ian Ivory, Geoff McElhanney, Wayne Bernard, Gordon McInnis and John Willet. They had already done a few hours training, had taken the boat out of the water and given it a good clean and were preparing to refuel. Then they were activated. So the crew went to the rescue of a 50ft 40 ton trawler north of Shag Rock. Its net was caught in the prop and its anchor was dragging. They towed it to shallower sheltered water near Adder Rock, w...here the skipper was hoping to get the net untangled. Bravo Crew headed home and crossed back over South Passage only to get another call, this time from the owner, requesting their help again. The trawler’s anchor was dragging again. So they went back over the bar once more and towed the trawler this time to Amity Point where, with difficulty, they were able to find a mooring. Towing a heavy disabled vessel over the bar at the bottom of an ebb tide required tremendous skill. The difficult conditions took a toll and the tow rope was under some strain. As strands gave way they had to cut the line and retie it! The seamanship skills by all onboard were really something. The crew were full of praise for their skipper. In Wayne’s words: At one stage we read 1.4m of depth. The trawler drew 3 metres and Ian had to judge the waves under the trawler to compensate for the low water level. And Ian was likewise full of praise for his crew who were calm, communicated really well and came up with useful suggestions. And apparently Deranji didn’t miss a beat. The skipper of the trawler was very grateful for what they did and was impressed. Really great work guys! - Roger

02.01.2022 Farewell North Stradbroke 1. After 18 years with VMR NSI our old rescue vessel is now at Bribie Island for some detailing, ready for the market. Doug Fraser, Gordon McInnis and Colin Haigh drove her up today to be detailed by some volunteers. North Stradbroke 1 has done countless medivacs, rescues, tows and search and rescues.

02.01.2022 Ella is a 29 year old woman who has worked very hard with her carer to raise money for North Stradbroke Island VMR. They run a stall at the markets at Point Lookout with craft that has been crocheted, knitted and sewn and it is called Nanna Does Craft because it is Ella’s grandmother, Elaine, who makes the things they sell. So far with Ella selling and Elaine creating, they have raised $850 and this is an ongoing operation. On Charlie Crew’s weekend, on a Sunday morning we ...took Ella and her dad, Dan on a cruise up to Day’s Gutter in Deranji to show them how much we appreciate their wonderful support. Ella’s mother Meredith told me how grateful she is that we did that and how much they enjoyed their time on Deranji. I think it is ironic that they are so grateful when they are doing so much for us! It really is amazing that there are such great people out there in our community who are so willing to support us. We are very lucky. See more
