16.01.2022 On Saturday the 7th of November Rockingham officially named and launched the new Rescue Vessel that replaced the Jamie Lee. WA’s Premier (and Rockingham’s Patron) Mark McGowan performed the duties watched by the DFES Commissioner Darren Klemm, the Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels as well as Rockingham’s members not to mention numerous other luminaries from various State and Commonwealth agencies. The consensus was that the new Rescue Vessel to be known as ORION will serve ...the community well. Congratulations must go to Graeme Martin and his team. Well done from VMRWA.

14.01.2022 Volunteering has given me a new-found sense of community, stronger connection and appreciation for what’s unique and valued in the Kimberley. Meet Krisma, Dep...uty Commander of Marine Rescue Broome and proud Noongar and Yamatji woman. After joining the group in 2012, Krisma has taken on a number of roles, from helping with catering and events to more recently supporting new recruits and working towards becoming an unrestricted skipper. Krisma’s family have a strong, ongoing cultural and environmental connection to Australia’s oceans, seas, rivers, estuaries and other waterways. Since moving to Broome and volunteering with Marine Rescue, I have grown to love, cherish, respect and enjoy the rivers, mangrove systems and the Indian Ocean. Western Australia is a vast and diverse State, with stark differences in our coastlines and landscape from the north to the south. What does emergency services volunteering look like in your community?

12.01.2022 To quote the great Sam Hinton Hooley Dooley! What an incredible week of training! Marine Rescue Broome and Derby attended an intensive 5 days of skipper trai...ning and with a massive turnout of 9 volunteers, everyone participated with enormous enthusiasm! Thank you Broome Volunteer Sea Rescue for your hospitality and hosting. Thank you Derby Volunteer Marine Rescue Group for making the trip down and bringing the Volunteer Marine Rescue Western Australia vessel Sardam down with you. Thanks to David MacLean for travelling up from Perth to deliver the training with me. This is the part of the job (if you can even call it that) that I live for. Can’t wait to do more of this across the Pilbara and Kimberley. See more

10.01.2022 Today we've successfully brought a damaged vessel into the Port of Geraldton. The Marshall Islands flagged livestock carrier MV Barkly Pearl, had sustained dama...ge to its hull and was approximately 120km north of Geraldton when we became involved. Last night, we tasked our Challenger jet to fly over the vessel and it was able to confirm damage to the starboard side of the vessel, which was listing to port. We held concerns about the integrity of the vessel and the potential for environmental issues and issued a Direction for the vessel to make its way to safety in the Port of Geraldton. We are currently working with Western Australian authorities to ensure that the vessel arrives safely in the Port of Geraldton safely. This includes managing any COVID risks on arrival in line with State protocols.

04.01.2022 FLIRTING WITH DEATH! On Easter Sunday in 1923, well-known 22 foot yacht, the Arlene, was cruising half a mile off Rottnest. Suddenly, a strong puff of wind fill...ed its main sail and heeled the boat over. "Casting its human freight, consisting of twenty-two, men, women and children, into the water". The drama was captured by Fremantle photographer, Abraham (Izzy) Orloff. The yacht owned by Mr Moss Myslis, capsized in a spot that was "particularly treacherous". In the vicinity of a number of reefs and in waters "infested with sharks". The Zephyr ferry was going passed full speed at the time, but when she saw the drama, immediately stopped and quickly lowered the vessel’s dinghy into the water. Other boats too came to help. They included the 'Caledonia', who rescued four young ladies who by all accounts "took their dunking in good spirit". And the 'Salopia'. Rescue work was difficult owing to the strong south-west breeze. Women and children were picked up first, while men clung on to the capsized boat. Eventually a line was connected to the Arlene and the yacht towed into shore. Had it not been for the prompt rescue, several lives would probably have been lost. Fortunately "the final result was nothing worse than a fright and a thorough wetting a damp adventure for those concerned". In the days to follow however, the Call newspaper warned that there was going to be "a heart-rendering tally of dead one of these summers", if the foolish practices of a "few" yachtsmen were not "voluntarily or forcibly stopped". While the Call reporter had no doubt that Mr Myslis "sailed his boat well". That he was "reasonably intelligent" and had "the best intentions in the world" when he set out to Rottnest that day, in this case "his judgment was rotten". The Arlene was accustomed to carrying fifteen crew in a race, but twenty-two people, not all could swim, was a vastly different risk. It’s a yachtsman’s duty to remember that he and not the passenger, knows the danger of the sea, and it is for him to judge what is a fair thing and what isn’t. wrote the reporter. There are two kinds of yachtsmen who are a menace on the river", the article went on to say. "One which overloads the boat with a crowd of girls and even kiddies, and the other which fills up every available place with beer and makes itself a menace on the seas and a nuisance on the shore. However good hearted Mr Myslis was and however willing to accommodate friends aboard a boat, the reporter trusted that he would never attempt this "perilous prank" again.
