18.01.2022 1974 - bikes galore! Reading through the April 5 1974 issue of AMCN today and came across the attached sales chart for motorcycle sales in January 1974 in Australia. Worth sharing methinks. Where to start with the comments on this table? Well, here's a few random observations: There were 41 brands of bike sold, talk about variety!... People from South Oz really liked their bikes as they sold more bikes in SA than VIC, which was more heavily populated. Bultaco, Ossa and Montesa sold 80 bikes in one month! But the biggie? If you just round up one month of sales by 12 for the 1974 year you get close to 100,000 motorbikes sold in 1974. In Australia in 2019 there were approximately 90,000 motorcycles sold in Australia. Not only is that less overall but it equates roughly to 132 bikes sold per 1,000 people in 1974 compared to just 27 bikes sold per 1,000 people in 2019. Bike ownership in 1974 was huge!! Feel free to add your own comments. See more

05.01.2022 Motoball Maico! Our European correspondent, Leo Keller, sent us some feedback on one of the captions in Issue 84, in regard to the modern looking pipe on the old Maico on p27. Leo reminded us that a similar pipe came standard on one of Maico's models from the '60s - the Motoball. You may have seen mention of the game but in short it is just like soccer but on dirt bikes. It was quite big in Germany and the Soviet Union and some other European countries. Typically, riders were on modified dirt bikes but Maico was one of the very few marques to produce a specialist Motoball model. The one pictured is from 1964 and was available in either 175cc or 250cc. The bike had a hand-shifted two-speed gearbox and a rigid rear end. Looks like fun but I bet it could turn very ugly very quickly!

02.01.2022 Joel Robert So sad to hear of Joel's passing this morning. He was acknowledged and respected as one of the world's best motocross riders. We were so thrilled ...to have him as our guest at VMX Magazine Classic Dirt 5 back in 2008. Joel spent three days chatting to fans, signing all manner of things and the smile never left his face. He also did a few laps, his first ride on a motocross bike for many years, and yes, he even had a minor bingle, but valiantly rode again the next day. The memories of that weekend will last forever for so many VMX Magazine readers. To Joel, an absolute legend. See more
