22.01.2022 TRAINING LOAD ERRORS Most people can think back to a time when they were injured whilst exercising. Whether you are a professional athlete, a dedicated age group athlete or somebody who had a goal of getting more fit, these injuries can have significant psychological impact. We can never entirely eliminate the risk of injury, but there are some simple steps we can take to reduce it. Recent research has shown us that both too much of an INCREASE and too much of a DECREASE in t...raining load can lead to a higher risk of injury. A study by Gabbett et al. in 2016 suggested that increasing your acute training load compared to your chronic ratio outside of the "Sweet Spot" (i.e. a ratio of 0.8-1.3) increased your risk of injury by up to 20%. We are fortunate to live in an age where wearable technology allows us to monitor every step we take and upload it to software that can monitor that ratio for us (such as Training Peaks, Strava or Garmin Connect). If these options aren't for you, keeping a diary or even sticking to the age old "don't increase by more than 10%" will help reduce your risk. References: Gabbett, T. J. (2016).
