17.01.2022 Some people clench their muscles as part of their response to stress and anxiety, this can most certainly affect your pelvic floor muscles and contribute to Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI). . It is important to distinguish between the normal butterflies that come with performing and hence needing to do a nervous wee, peeing lots because youre drinking lots of water for your vocal folds, or whether it is masking an underlying SUI. . Your pelvic health physio can help you ...distinguish between whats normal pelvic floor function and whats not. If stress and anxiety were contributing factors, then your support team should also include a psychologist to help you with stress management. . Til next time, Be Free In Your Voice. . x Selina . 14.01.2022 Vocal load management is important for all voice users but it is such an abstract matter! How do you measure something so intangible and subjective? And even if you can quantify it, how do you actually use it to plan and manage your vocal load and to help prevent overuse issues? . Thankfully the world loves sports and tonnes of money and talent have been poured into sport science research to help athletes train smarter, perform better, and reduce the risk of injury. The metho...d Im sharing with you is a popular and easy-to-use one amongst athletes. I think it translates very well for voice users because voice performers are vocal athletes after all! 14.01.2022 Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) does not only affect mothers and seniors. The youngest patients Ive had to address SUI with were in their early 20s and have never been pregnant. Naturally, the reasons for SUI in never-given-birth people are different and one possibility is excessive bearing down on your pelvic floor. Examples for bearing down actions are: . Straining in the toilet to pee and/or to poop Habitually sucking your gut in so your stomach looks flatter Impro...per vocal technique when singing, especially belting . In order to regain a confident and competent pelvic floor, all the contributing factors must be addressed, which means your support team should include all the required experts to help you address each issue. . 10.01.2022 Whilst most people know and understand that a weak muscle cant do their job well, it is not as widely known that an overactive muscle also cant do their job properly! Try this: clench your teeth, keep them clenched and now speak or sing, it doesnt really work, does it? . If your Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) is a result a muscle overactivity, then doing more pelvic floor exercise may actually make it worse! Which is why identifying the unique reasons for your SUI... is critical in the successful treatment for it. . Til next time, Be Free In Your Voice. . x Selina . 02.01.2022 Happy World Voice Day! . Just as elite athletes train consistently to stay in competition shape, voice users also need to train their voices consistently to stay in top performance shape!
