22.01.2022 VW Type 4 kombi heat exchangers... we powder coat new ones(subject to dressing for fitments on snouts), old ones have 30+ years of patches, bad repairs and no metal left in important areas. We called it on this set... and the next two. They are past a productive life. Im not going to sit there for 7 hours.. fixing metal that is not there

21.01.2022 Ultrasonics yeh?

20.01.2022 Bad, BAD 'repair'. There was about 1/2 a tube of silicone in a futile attempt to stop the oil leak. This Type IV had its oil strainer plate tightened more than specification(9 ft-lbs).... likely with a few 'ugga duggas' of an impact tool. We are going to be lucky if we can save the crankcase. The thru-bolt is M8 12.9 grade(high tensile and hard). Took some effort to bend it.

20.01.2022 Me tonight. Dirty.... with swarf.

19.01.2022 VW sells parts for the human gearbox!! Sadly, not in Australia where we love our wurst and bevvies!

15.01.2022 Valve clearances tightened just once.

13.01.2022 I'm a bit late for Halloween!.... old Kombi motors and 'undead' rat claws reaching out from the engine tinware!

03.01.2022 Another one... We caught this 2.0 type IV in time. Inlet valve clearances tightened, just once, until it misfired again.. the inlet valve seat fell out after stopping on heat soak, then worked its way back into the cylinder head again just on cold cranking the motor. Correct fuel mixtures and ignition timing, along with new cylinder heads and some cooling system work while its apart. Evidence in the cylinder heads that they were previously 'reconditioned'. The cylinder head a...luminium couldnt hold the inlet seats, with a combination of suspected poor replacement seat tolerance and proven aluminium softness after brinell checking(from excessive heat cycling).. new heads are important, originals don't last forever, even after 'repairs'. The right carburettor was an 1800 spec(under-jetted), both worn and leaky, also running a 009 distributor for extra low rpm heat creation the motor couldn't remove by itself. Cause and effect.. from many sources. See more
