25.01.2022 Coolum Meals On Wheels Lutz Originally from Germany I came to Australia 20 years ago and have been living on the Sunshine Coast for the past 18 years. My family and I love the weather, the friendly people and the natural environment.... As a qualified chef I a number of years working in Top End Restaurants including Michelin Star’s throughout Germany, England and France. I later studied accountancy and became the Financial Controller of the various Hilton Hotels, Hamilton Island, Twin Waters Resort and the Sofitel in Brisbane. I have been the support chef with Meals on Wheels at Coolum for the past year supporting Therese; I am also a volunteer at Coolum Coast Care for over 8 years. The management is very well organised and open minded which enables our team of volunteers and I to have the kitchen like a fine tuned running machine, full of fun, banter and laughter. Any new volunteers quickly blend into this team spirit, adapting to the many tasks required in the kitchen while still having fun. New flavours in soups and sauces are test tasted by the team who will offer their feedback and sometimes suggest alternate spices, this keeps everyone actively involved. Volunteering is an enjoyable way to make new friends and learn new skills. I feel a great deal of satisfaction giving back to my community, knowing that we are preparing meals not only with fresh produce and ingredients, but with love and laughter combined.
24.01.2022 Ruth Wise Originally, from Tasmania Ruth wise and her family moved around the country quiet a lot because her husband was a Bank Manager. They lived in Western Australia for 12 years before deciding to move to the right side of the country the Sunshine Coast. After her children grew up Ruth commenced work in Age Care. Ruth has been a volunteer with Bloomhill Cancer Care for 5 years now, she is a transport driver for the cancer clients, as well as assisting with most fundrai...sing events. Ruth said I have baked many, many scones for morning tea and fundraising events. Ruth said As a Bank Manager’s wife I have always been on call to volunteer, however I feel more valued and supported at Bloomhill Caner Care then any other previous volunteer position I’ve held. Ruth said The team at Bloomhill work so harmoniously together that it’s difficult to tell the staff from the volunteers. Many people here are from interstate or overseas, volunteering connects you to a supportive community which is important to those who may not have family currently present.
23.01.2022 Lily My grandmother has been my inspiration, from a very young age she instilled in me the value of helping people. I have been a volunteer all my life. 22.01.2022 Kerrie Farrow Eumundi Heritage & Visitor Information Centre has a wealth of knowledge and information regarding Eumundi’s heritage and places of interest for visitors to the area. They also have an arts space for local artists and heritage exhibitions called Wan’din’in meaning a gathering of people in local Kabi Kabi language. Kerrie Farrow, originally from Geelong in Victoria, moved to the Noosa Hinterland 25 years ago after living and travelling overseas for many years. ...Since being on the Coast, Kerrie has utilised her skills as a volunteer at the Noosa Pengari Steiner School for over 20 years, and also as a volunteer Leader at the Noosa Sea Scouts for more than 10 years. Kerrie has been a volunteer with Eumundi Heritage & Visitor Information Centre for over 2 years now. Kerrie describes the Centre as a living museum with over 95% of the objects and photographs in our displays coming from Eumundi locals. Kerrie said: My first project was to catalogue over 3,500 photos dating back to the early days of Eumundi in the 1890’s. We are often contacted by the public offering to donate historical material to us, or requesting us to research into our archives on their behalf. I enjoy the human contact, welcoming visitors to our area and informing them about places of interest and local walking trails. I derive great satisfaction whenever I am able to connect families through our research material. Last week a couple from Brisbane came in wanting to research their family history. The lady’s Great Great Grandmother was one of Eumundi’s pioneers. Unbelievably the same day another person, unknown to the couple, came in and his Great Grandmother was the sister of other lady’s relative! It gave me great pleasure to be able to connect them. Kerrie said: This is an interesting and enjoyable environment, ever changing and it keeps me intellectually active and connected to our community. I have also made some great friends as we share a common bond in volunteering.

Kerri stayed in the area and worked at the local council in economic development for small business. After marrying and bringing up a family she separated from her partner. Kerri and Wally have been volunteers at Kunda Park Lifeline Superstore for 18months now. They originally came in to look for furniture and loved the Lifeline Superstore so much they decided to become volunteers. Kerri sometimes works the cash register and organises the clothing and manchester displays. She said There are such a variety of products in the Superstore that you could furnish an entire home with quality items and I just love helping people with their selections. Kerri and Wally are a fun loving couple and enjoyed the interaction with the other volunteers, many of which have become their close friends. Kerri said We have a lot of young people on Newstart as volunteers and we all benefit from sharing our knowledge and perspectives. I would recommend volunteering to anyone as this is a great environment full of fun, laughter and learning.
21.01.2022 Wendy I have been happily married for 30 years and my husband and I love to travel together. We are originally from Melbourne and moved to the Sunshine Coast for the lifestyle and warmer climate. I love the outdoors, walking along the beaches and enjoy yoga, which I have been practicing for 14 years now. In my working life, I was a teacher and have always enjoyed working and volunteering with children. However, I was ready for something less physically demanding. Having good computer and communication skills, I now assist VSC with the coordination of interviews, recruitment and client services. Recently, I was involved with the recruitment of 300 volunteers for the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital. We work as a team of volunteers, much like a family business, encouraging and assisting each other with projects at hand.

Her background was working as an assistant manager and supervisor for various retail outlets, such as Target and the ABC Stores. Robyn has been a volunteer in the Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre child care facility for 3 years now. When she retired she felt the need to keep busy and give back to the community, so she applied for a position as a volunteer within the Cen...tre. The tasks Robyn carries out include administrative work and as well as child care, she also helps out in the kitchen whenever the Centre prepares for the community dinners. Robyn said: I love working with children, having 5 grandchildren of my own, they keep me mentally and physical active and therefore I feel far more youthful for my age. Robyn said: The volunteer team which I work with have become like a family to me, they are all very supportive and caring, helping each other out whenever we have problems of our own. I have met some really lovely people here and made some very close friends. We all share a common bond in creating a better community by offering our services and time as volunteers.
19.01.2022 4 Paws Animal Rescue Inc Bev I have been a volunteer with 4 Paws for 9 years now and in my current position I am responsible for organizing our merchandise stalls and assigning volunteers for their help. Whenever able I will also assist in manning stalls at community functions and events.... Prior to this I worked as a volunteer for the Red Cross for 10 years and also with a hospital auxiliary in a country town for 5 years. My organizational abilities possibly stem from being a farmer’s wife for over 53 years. We operated a cattle and crop property for 10 years with the nearest town 35 klms. away. I needed to be well organized. This followed owning a pineapple and avocado farm for 41 years. For relaxation these days I enjoy gardening in my peaceful surroundings and having spare time on my hands love involvement with like minded people working towards a common goal. Having always been an animal lover I derive a great deal of satisfaction in knowing that we are making a difference to neglected or abandoned dogs and cats. These domestic creatures deserve a loving and peaceful environment and the foster homes we place them in provide this until we can find them a forever home with caring owners. Apart from the joy I experience in working as a volunteer for PAWS I have also enjoyed meeting lovely people and making many new friends. I would strongly recommend volunteering to anyone who is bored, feels isolated or lonely as they will be very surprised at just how much more satisfying their lives will become. Pictured here is Olivia a beautifully natured 8 year old female Maltese. She is very quiet, doesn't bark and can be left alone for short periods. Olivia would make a perfect companion for an older person, she loves cuddles and is happy being a lap dog. Olivia has had most of her teeth removed so is unable to eat hard foods, a raw meat diet would suit her very well. This lovely little dog is looking for a caring "forever" home. Only Sunshine Coast family's without small children can apply as Olivia is tiny in size and timid. Adoption fee $550.

My other interest include watching sport, sim-racing and comic book superheroes.
18.01.2022 Hoofbeats Equine Therapy Sally I have been a primary school music teacher for 20 years now. Through a chance meeting at an event I became acquainted with the organisation called Hoofbeats , an equine therapy program for at-risk children. I was so impressed with the friendly approachable people and the charity work they were involved with that I became a volunteer myself.... I love working with children and wanted to learn more about horses and the benefits we can all derive by connecting with these beautiful gentle creatures. My teenage daughter Jas is also a registered volunteer for Hoofbeats and thoroughly enjoys helping out with the horses. I am developing my horse skills and knowledge about the horse gear through the donated equipment we receive, clean/restore and then sell to raise money for our charity. I am directly involved with cleaning, collating, photographing and writing the descriptions for the horse gear. Often our horses will wander curiously into the barn where I am working to check out any new equipment, have a cuddly and stay for company and carrots!. They are greatly looked after and loved, therefore extremely gentle and friendly, which enables them to be utilised in natural therapy with children. Apart from the enormous pleasure I feel working in these natural surroundings I have also become quiet accustom to the occasional creepy crawlies and even spiders no longer concern me. Volunteering has not only allowed me expand my knowledge and skills regarding horses it has also given me the opportunity of making some wonderful new friends.

13.01.2022 Coolum Meals On Wheels Fay I worked as the Canteen Supervisor at the Royal Brisbane Hospital for 25 years while raising my three sons. I am an active person who likes to keep busy and I enjoy meeting new people.... I have been a volunteer with Coolum Meals On Wheels for 19 years now and believe that keeping active and involved with our community has been good for my physical and mental health. Throughout the years of volunteering I have made and retained some very close and long term friendships, this is because we all shared a bond related to helping others. I am involved in the delivery of meals, as a jocky not a driver, this is the person who takes the meal into the client’s home. It is much more than just dropping off a meal, for some clients we are the only regular/familiar face they get to see that day. I will often have a good lengthy chat to ensure other aspects of their life are running smoothly. Volunteering works both ways it allows you to connect to your community making it a better place, particularly for those living in isolation. However, volunteering can help you as much as the course you choose to help. During my time as a volunteer I made new friends, boosted my social skills and remain mentally and physically active. I recommend volunteering to anyone, especially if you feel lonely or isolated yourself.

11.01.2022 Charles Charles has spent over 40 years in an investment career in global capital markets starting as a principal in the grain business in Melbourne in 1975 and working in a wide variety of other global investment roles until December 2016, starting in the voluntary sector in January 2017. Charles has also done some voluntary fund raising as well as contributing long-term to other similar causes on an ongoing basis and feels extremely fortunate to be involved in one of the ...few sectors where the sense of values remains intact. He has a wide variety of interests being a history major, enjoying reading, blogging, music (playing and listening), cinema, media and walking 2 dogs in the Sunshine Coast hinterland while occasionally (!) contemplating the follies of the human race but more often its more worthwhile achievements, often exemplified in the NFP and associated sectors.
07.01.2022 4 Paws Animal Rescue Inc Margot My career background is in data communications, I worked for the government and in the banking sector. I have been a volunteer with 4 Paws Animal Rescue or 3 years now. ... Having a love of all animals I decided to become a foster carer for abandoned cats. I live alone in an apartment and fine nothing more pleasurable than being greeted with a friendly meow when entering my home. I am currently taking care of Samson a beautiful male ginger cat with a long and fluffy tail. Samson is mischievous and very playful he would suit an environment that has activity with lots of interaction, such as a family with older children. Many of the cats that are abandoned come from people who have passed away or move into nursing homes, some are simply left behind when a family moves on. The pound will often contact us, as they did when Dorito came into their possession. Dorito was a very old matted and skinny cat with a beautiful gentle nature, the pound wanted us to look after him and he is now enjoying life with a foster carer. Many elderly or disabled people cannot organise transport for their pets, so Pet Transporting is another activity I am involved with. When I deliver the pets back to the owners after a veterinary consultation I need to relay to the owners what the problem was and what remedy is needed. I enjoy meeting the public when working on stalls and sausage sizzles and have found that people are very generous when it comes to giving donations for animals. If you are an animal lover and want to become a foster carer, meet wonderful people and make new friends contact 4 Paws Animal Rescue, they assist with all the vet fees and associated food costs until a forever family is found.
06.01.2022 Marie I work as a volunteer personal assistant to the CEO of VSC. I have never held this kind of position before. I found it to be a great learning curve. However, I guess it's my sticky-beak nature and high tech abilities which allow me to know exactly what is going on in the office. I enjoy working with people who all have a story to tell, a life fully lived and so much to offer. Every day offers a new challenge and I am happy here.

Peter’s background is in mining, driving trucks and earthmoving equipment. Peter said We retired 2 years ago and were looking for a charitable course in our community to support. My wife Toni is currently completing a course in Palliative Care Training so that she can also volunteer her services in palliative care for the guests. Both Col and Dennis worked together for 27 years with Queensland Railways, Col as a manager and Dennis as a thermit welder and truck driver. Col recalls how a friend of his peacefully passed away at the previous Katie Rose Cottage, he fondly recollects his friend saying pass me a stubbie from the frig before you leave. The next day his friend died. Col said I strongly believe that there should be more Katie Rose Cottages so that people can pass away in this loving home environment instead of a clinical hospital. Dennis is also a volunteer with Noosa Integrated Catchment Association, he helps clean up weeds and rubbish from the Noosa River and records various bird species for the Council. All three men agree that giving back to your community is not only very satisfying and rewarding, but it is also a great deal of fun. There is a lot of joking and bantering amongst the volunteers, much of which is often instigated by Dennis, however all respect each other’s skills and work collectively as a team with a common goal- to make Katie Rose Cottage a loving and tranquil place for the guests. Dennis said I look forward every week to working with the team of volunteers, as we treat each other just like a second family.
