At the first show Cash won a lovely 10 point Best Of Breed, run for the group and Best Junior in group. 04.01.2022 The dog park. What an interesting concept. A big secured space where we can unleash our dogs and let them mingle with other dogs. And where dog owners can mingl...e with each other as well. We call it socializing and I agree it is totally social. For dog owners. Is it socializing for dogs though? If the owners acted how some of the dogs act, I feel someone would call the police. Often I see dog owners at the park with their own beverages. And yet the dogs all share community water bowls. The dog park is an unstructured environment, a free for all if you will. It is an environment that a large majority of our dogs are not mature enough to handle. Socialization is not running around like a bunch of lunatics all over each other. You will find no creature in the world that socializes the way dogs do in dog parks. It’s not natural. We can’t forget the human aspect to the dog park, and humans ruin everything. There are owners who go to the dog park and have no control over their dog, or have skewed opinions on what is acceptable behaviour for a dog, or who simply don’t pay any attention to their dog at all in the park. If you have a calm friendly dog, it takes one (1) incident or altercation to erase all the hard work and training and turn your dog reactive. Dog parks teach dogs to prioritize pretty much everything over their owner. They don’t listen, they do as they please, and ignorant owners chalk it up to they are just dogs having fun. No. In an ideal world, dogs inside the dog park would be under their owners control at all times. But the world isn’t ideal, the world is shit. Dog parks are public spaces. They are a breeding ground for reactivity and anxiety in dogs, not to mention they easily can spread infections like kennel cough or worms. A dog park is not a place to take a dog for exercise. There is no substitute for walking your dog. A dog park is not a place to take your dog for socialization training, just as we don’t take children to rock concerts to teach them how to behave. Dog parks are not even for dogs. They are for owners. Don’t kid yourself. Just stay away from dog parks.
