23.01.2022 Yoga is about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone knowing you have a stable base to fall back on. Yoga is trying something new even though it’s difficult and you might fail. Yoga is about giving back. These are some of my truths, as I embark on my new Yoga teacher journey. Classes begin Tuesday evenings 6.30pm @theboostercafe + studio in Brookvale. 22.01.2022 True Yoga is not about the shape of your body, but the shape of your life. Yoga is not to be performed; it is to be lived. Yoga doesn’t care about what you have been; it cares about the person you are becoming. Yoga is designed for a vast and profound purpose, and for it to be truly called Yoga, it’s essence must be embodied. 15.01.2022 I am currently reading a book called ‘Joy On Demand’ by Chade-Meng Tan. Included in the book are various short practices one can do to bring more joy to life. Here’s a couple I have been doing myself, which are simple and effective. Try them for yourself, and let me know in the comments how you went. The following I have taken from the book: Learning to incline the mind towards joy The more the mind becomes familiar with joy, the more it perceives joy, inclines towards joy, a...nd effortlessly creates the conditions conducive to joy. For the mind to get familiar with joy, first it has to notice it. So we train it to perceive thin slices of joy. In life, there are many moments of joy, but they are easy to miss because they are usually fleeting and not super intense. Once the mind is trained to see them, it can, and naturally will, incline toward them. Practice 1 The training is simple. It is simply to notice joy. Whenever there is any joy arising in our field of experience, even if it is merely a subtle hint of joy, simply notice there is joy, that is all. That is the entire practice. There is joy to be found in many moments of our lives, though it may be subtle and fleeting. For example, with that pleasant feeling of warm water on the skin as we get in the shower, joy arises immediately, but we seldom notice it and it fades away in seconds. The practice is simply to notice when joy is there. Do this a number of times and a habit will begin to form. Practice 2. Inviting and attending to joy Sit in any posture that allows you to be alert and relaxed at the same time. You may keep your eyes open or closed. Let us take three breaths. In the first breath, bring gentle but intense attention to the process of breathing. In the second breath, calm the body. In the third breath, bring up joy. If necessary, bring up a smile or half smile. If any joy arises, bring full attention to it. If you like, repeat this three-breaths practice a few more times. With this practice, the mind gets familiar with joy. With this practice, you can begin to develop the ability to bring about joy on demand. Why is this simple practice so powerful? Because it contains three elements conducive to joy: stillness of mind (from the first breath), ease and relaxation (from the second breath), and invitation and awareness of joy (from the third breath). May joy be with you
