24.01.2022 In 2016, VOPO Earth co founder Charlotte Rose Mellis witnessed first-hand the pressures of ocean pollution in The Philippines, after sailing the Palawan region. Obsessed with tracking tides, economics and logistics she began a quest to deeply understanding the challenge of #RoguePlastic for one of the top five ocean plastic contributors in the world. Looking at a map, something about the Visayas particularly captivated her interest. The lack of tourism, yet heavily entrenched... fishing, sugarcane and other agricultural industries had lead to widespread residential areas with pressures on the culturally rich Aeta mountain tribes, yet in the absence of sufficient waste management or access to sanitation, along with entrenched logging industries, much land was cleared, water quality was low and the wild ecology suffered. In an act of curiosity and sincerity, Charlotte connected with the Philippines Reef & Rainforest Conservation Foundation, specifically the Danjugan Island sanctuary team to better understand the barriers they faced to wilderness preservation & to identify ways that VOPO Earth as a global platform could devise a program to support their goals locally, for the benefit of all. Fast forward three years, after two inspiring and unforgettable VOPO #ImpactAdventures, 4 sponsored Local Scholarship programs, transformative experiences in nature and multiple workshops which have facilitated the refining and official creation of SWEEP : Sea Waste Education to Eradicate Plastic. Just this week, together we celebrate boldly sailing from Manila to Danjugan Sanctuary for #EarthVoyage, as part of a campaign to sweep clean the seas of The Philippines through awareness, cleanups, network building and consultation for communities who are committed to protecting their home. During this time, three Wala Usik : Tiangge + Kapehan zero waste stores have officially opened, with enterprise support provided to female shop owners making this incredible transition. This is a profound accomplishment, in an economy where single-use plastic has been pervasive. We could not be more grateful to be on this journey, designing revenue streams that invest in such grassroots positive-impact initiatives, with such ambitious and bold local partners In the VOPO Earth family. We celebrated yesterday with a team day in the Negros mountainside. Now, we are ready and excited to welcome our next international guests in December - February sailing season, for an inter-island #ImpactAdventure like no other! www.vopo.earth
