08.01.2022 The holy grail of business these days is the concept of 'scaling up.' Adding more clients, adding more revenue and growing bigger sits as one of the goals for almost all business owners (including me, by the way). And there is a really interesting little distortion in the market about the messaging we receive about how to grow our business. ... Now, this is going to be fairly self evident, but marketers are particularly good at advertising their business. Accountants and financial strategists however are not so good. So while you hear a LOT about how marketing will grow your business, you DON'T hear so much about the financial strategy required to make that happen. You see, adding clients to your business is great and is obviously a desirable goal. But what's not so great is business owners trying to 'scale their business up,' when they've got some serious problems with efficiency in their current business that no one actually ever teaches business owners about If those efficiencies aren't eliminated, adding more clients and revenue only AMPLIFIES those inefficiencies, costing a huge amount of time, money and mental energy to fix. This is why many business owners who have the goal of scaling up end up with more clients and find they’re working harder than ever before, but discover they're not actually making any more money. These are the common inefficiencies that many business owners trip up on: 1) Adding an employee to the business, even though the existing employees aren't being fully utilised. 2) Poorly performing debt facilities. 3) Poorly understood cash flow management and mismanagement of debtors. 4) Not understanding how much money the business has to carry in advertising and labour cost before booking revenue (this is why most businesses operate in the red). It's not uncommon for several of these issues, plus additional ones I haven't even mentioned to exist all at the same time!
