23.01.2022 Due to the coronavirus the Supreme Court and District Court have suspended Jury Trials until further notice. You may have also heard via media outlets that there has been a coronavirus outbreak at the Family Court and there is a temporary closure of that court. Currently, Local Court matters remain unaffected, although there are unconfirmed reports that all traffic matters will be adjourned until after 30 June 2020. Our lawyers are working tirelessly to deal with the huge ra...mifications of these changes. If your matter is affected you will be contacted, otherwise, if you have concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. In the meantime, we wish everyone the best of health during this time and encourage everyone to still support their local businesses and communities.

17.01.2022 The Federal Government has announced the terms of reference for the parliamentary inquiry into family, domestic and sexual violence. The inquiry will primarily focus on violence towards women in the family home. We see this as an important step towards reducing such violence towards men, women and children in Australian homes. You can read more about the inquiry here: https://www.lawsociety.com.au//20/DV%20media%20release.PDF... Remember, that if you do suffer from such violence there ARE things that you can do. 14.01.2022 Its brilliant to see that the State Government is developing new strategies to support victims of domestic violence and is rolling out a new domestic violence campaign and strategy aimed at hairdressers called Cut It Out". The Attorney-General and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence has launched a program of workshops for salon professionals on domestic and family violence to be delivered across Albury, Wagga Wagga, South Coast, Central Coast and Hunter. The wo...rkshops will bring together small groups of salon professionals and will offer information to empower salon professionals to better recognise domestic and family violence and make appropriate referrals for victims of domestic and family violence. 03.01.2022 It’s good news as the NSW Government is easing restrictions again just in time for Christmas. This means that from 1st December up to 50 people will be allowed in a household, provided that they utilise an outdoor space. It is recommended that one has 30 guests if one doesn’t have an outdoor space. Presently only 20 people are allowed to be in a household at one time. Not only this, but businesses will be free to welcome their employees back to offices and workplaces full t...ime. The public health order for people to work from home where "reasonably practical" will be removed on December 14. Other restrictions to be eased include allowing smaller hospitality venues less than 200 square metres to double their capacity by allowing one patron per two square metres, instead of one per four square metres. #covidupdate #vrtlawyers #COVID19 #covid19restrictions https://www.smh.com.au//fifty-people-allowed-in-a-home-as-

02.01.2022 We are pleased to have seen that fellow lawyers have spoken up about the urgent need for reform in the Criminal Justice System with its treatment towards Indigenous people. The Bar Association’s Tony McAvoy SC has told the NSW inquiry that actions speak louder than words when it comes to addressing the disproportionate rates of Aboriginal people incarcerated in New South Wales. Not only this, but the coroner’s court should be resourced to investigate deaths, or otherwise an... independent body should be created to investigate the coronial process. The Bar Association has also advised for bail laws to be amended to reduce the amount of people on remand for minor offences. The Association have stressed that the Criminal Justice System needs a re-design, from the current system that is set out to catch young Aboriginal people, thus perpetuating a vicious cycle.
