21.01.2022 Heats 7 and 8- VS Nats Heat 7 today was started in a 15-18 knot North Easterly which threatened to build. Jeremy, Tom and Hugh in SFC computers took control ear...ly in the race working the left side of the middle of the beat. Firestorm and Absinthe battled all race for the minor podium, and in the end Firestorm claimed 2nd and Absinthe 3rd. TBS struggled in the fresh conditions but managed 4th ahead of Raptor who found some great upwind speed. Sever Nober finished 6th with Black Diamond and Meeks bringing up the rear. Heat 8 became really fresh. 20-25 knots with some BIG gusts. Absinthe and Firestorm resumed their battle constantly finding ways to pass and be passed in the survival conditions. They left the fleet in their wake with only Raptor able to put up a fight for a short time before breaking a transom rudder mounting. As the race went on the breeze got stronger claiming boat after boat including Firestorm whose main tore in the clew. By race end it was only Absinthe on the lead leg with a defiant TBS finishing a distant second. This determination and survival could ultimately be a deciding factor in the battle for National honours for the septuagenarian Captain Col and his gritty crew of Adam and Janine. With 2 more heats to sail in possibly more fresh to frightening conditions it is too early to call- but looking good for the crew of TBS. Good luck! We must also thank and acknowledge the support of our series sponsors: PPK Mining, Rees and SFC Computers who have been very generous supporting our series. Cheers! Mick

03.01.2022 Heats 1 and 2- VS Nats at Sunshine After rigging in the sweltering heat the breeze finally changed to the NE at start time and began to build. Heat 1 saw a clea...r start and a first lap drag race ensued. At the first mark it was Firestorm closely followed by TBS, Runaway and Black Diamond. Runaway was first to swim in a gybe whilst Black Diamond played it safe and solid to jump into third place. After a smoking run and a perfect lay line pick, TBS stormed into the lead which she held until the top mark. A quick and tidy set saw the TBS crew assert their lead until the backstay wire snapped at the swage resulting in a broken mast and a very long swim and recovery effort before the long tow home. This left Firestorm the task of a gybe and run to the bottom mark and a short work to the finish to grab victory. Alas, not to be. A big swim in the gybe allowed the rock solid Black Diamond to breeze through to take the chocolates! Chook, Hayden and Adam are making a habit of winning the tough ones. Well done boys! Runaway made a brilliant comeback from the early swim to take second with Firestorm third. Several boats were damaged in the blustery conditions and failed to finish. Two Sailors plus One broke spreaders, Stowe a vang, Raptor and Purple Haze also had issues. Of these boats only Stowe and Purple Haze returned for Race 2. Devocean called it a day - unbroken and able to sail tomorrow. Heat 2 and with several boats already retired, another casualty occurred before the start when Incognito lost their rudder. By now it was a gusty 15-22 knots swinging in direction that made for a challenging race. Firestorm and Runaway motored up the first work with Black Diamond looming ready to pounce on any misfortunes. An uncharacteristic gear failure led to a very long swim for Firestorm and Runaway ran away to a very impressive victory. Black Diamond grabbed a second whilst Stowe limped home kite-less into third. Finally Firestorm finished fourth and Purple Haze rounded up the finishers with a 5th place.
