13.01.2022 This weeks #CoachesIntel is from Dion Harle who led the Qld U13 Boys (Spurs Team) at The Festival of Indoor Hockey Nationals in January. Penalty corners are a v...ital part of our game, both in indoor and outdoor hockey. One of the issues I constantly see with young teams is they over think the situation and make penalty corners too complicated. As a coach, I believe teams should always keep our attacking penalty corners as simple as possible. Direct shots or one pass, tend to be the most effective. Here are two examples of the same short corner that I find very effective. The first is from our 2020 U13 Queensland Spurs team scoring against ACT and the second is from our U15 Queensland Maroon team scoring against Victoria in the Gold Medal game. This short corner requires a strong and accurate injection, followed by firm lay-off to the right post. The injector needs to make their way outside the line of the right post and in front of the defender on that post, deflecting the ball passed them and into the goal. #TeamQld

Vipers intends to open team nominations in September, with a proposed season start in early October. While the January 2021 Australian Indoor Championships were cancelled by Hockey Australia last week, at this stage, Hockey Queensland is moving forward with the Queensland Indoor State Championships across November ...and December 2020 for U13, U15 and U18 boys and girls. To ensure a successful season, SBIHA is calling for expressions of interest (EOI) from Vipers players and parents who would like to be involved in one of the following five sub-committees as a volunteer. 06.01.2022 Update from Hockey Queensland Indoor Hockey Committee (IHC) Hello to all of our Indoor players, officials, committee members and enthusiasts we hope that you ...are all well and coping in these very different times that we have never experienced. Our Indoor Committee met on 15/4 (Wednesday night) and this was the first meeting of the new committee heading into 2020 2021. Committee members are domiciled across a wide area of Queensland and bring a significant amount of expertise and skills to the Committee in our charter to develop and oversee programs and events to ensure high levels of competition, participation and officiating in Indoor hockey across Queensland. Members are Carol Bradbury; Tony Comerford: Sonya Fisher; Dion Harle; Lyn Hill (Chair) Paul Matherson: Shane Palmer; Vicki Spyve: Lyn Tucker; Jan Walker. Ex officio members are Adam Barry and Paul Tucker. A member of Hockey Queensland staff regularly attends our meetings and in the past Barry Vohland and Sue McLatchey have filled that role. Given the uncertainty of what Hockey (both outdoor and indoor) are going to be able to run in terms of playing seasons, our Committee have discussed many options of the way forward. Until we have further understanding of the government restrictions on sport we are unable to provide any information except to re-assure you all that we will continue to update as we are able. One thing is for sure and that is we are all very keen to have Hockey of all formats being played again as soon as it is practical and safe. The recent announcement of Belgium being named as Host of the 2021 Indoor Hockey World Cup has been welcome news and we sincerely hope that this opportunity remains viable for February 2021. Queensland has a number of players in the current Indoor World Cup squads who will be hoping for National Team selection later in the year (details are still to be finalised) Women Aymee Dowell, Holly Gilbar and Nicole Yearbury Men Aidan Campbell, Troy Rossiter, Jared Taylor and Jackson Willie In our Officiating team, Adam Barry, Australias top Indoor Umpire has attended two world cups in 2015 & 2018 and will also be hoping for selection on the Indoor World Cup Officials Panel. The IHC in conjunction with HQ and HA will continue to watch and plan for eventual outcomes and in the meantime we are looking to develop some tools and resources that may be of interest to players, coaches, umpires and spectators alike, so stay tuned in the coming months to the HQ Indoor Hockey Face book page.
