16.01.2022 - OPTOMETRIST SPOTLIGHT - Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of VSP Vision Care, Id like to introduce you to Casey Optometrist in Victoria. Resident optometrist Joanna manages a close-knit team of 7, including another optometrist Shani, an optical technician Jennifer, and three optical dispensers Yvonne, Denise and Sarah, and together, they take the limelight for optometrist of the month for September. ... Operating since March 2016, the practice is decked out not only with the best in fashionable eyewear, but also with the latest technology and frame fitting machinery, allowing the team to make glasses on the spot for certain patients, cutting down the waiting time. Joanna says that one of the most heart-warming things about working in optometry is seeing your patients be able to lead new lives with the help of glasses and optical treatment. We recently had an 18-year-old girl who had surgery to remove a life-threatening brain tumor. After this, she suffered from severe double vision, and she had to walk around school with a patch over her eye. Her social and sporting life changed drastically as she was unable to do a lot of the activities she had previously enjoyed. We were able to prescribe glasses with Fresnel prisms that allowed her to see again without her patch, and she was able to attend her year 12 formal like any other senior high school student. It was incredibly touching. So, when you need your eyes checked next, its your best bet to touch base with Joanna and the team at Casey Optometrist.

13.01.2022 Can Your Eyes Get Sunburned? You, wouldnt think so, but they sure can! During the hot summer months, were constantly reminded to "Slip, Slop, Slap" to protect our skin from the suns damaging UV rays, but what many of us dont realise is that our eyes are vulnerable to becoming sunburned too. Long hours in the sun expose unprotected eyes to dangerous UVA and UVB rays and can cause sunburned eyes. If youve spent several hours in the sun and your eyes start watering, become ...itchy, sensitive to light, or dry and gritty, its likely you have sunburned eyes. Sunburned eyes arent just irritating. Resident optometrist from Optometry Australia, Luke Arundel, says that without protection, eyes are at risk of photokeratitis, a painful eye condition that occurs when eyes are exposed to too much ultraviolet radiation. "Photokeratitis can occur in one or both eyes simultaneously, and like sunburn which occurs on your skin, it is not usually noticed until well after the damage has occurred," he says. Its easy to prevent sunburned eyes. A wide-brimmed hat will help shade your eyes, but dont stop there. Every member of your family should wear sunglasses outdoors. Ask your optometrist for sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection and/or blue-light filtering. Think about frame size toolarger frames help prevent harmful rays from sneaking in at the sides or top of your glasses. Take these few simple precautions to protect your eyes from burning, and not only will you have fun in the sun, but youll enjoy good vision for many summers to come! If you suspect your eyes are seriously sunburned, dont take any chances. Visit your VSP network optometrist right away.

Check out your next pair of optical frames and/or sunglasses at EyeQ Karrinyup.

13.01.2022 Its World Glaucoma Week and we are reminded that family history plays an important factor in comprehending, diagnosing and preventing certain eye conditions. Did you know - approximately 300,000 Australians are thought to have glaucoma, but only 50% have been diagnosed; and if you have a first degree relative with glaucoma, there is up to a 50% chance that you will have it too. If you havent asked about your familys eye history, strike up a conversation when you get home a...nd remember to book in your next eye exam. Learn more about glaucoma today and be sure to share it with your friends and family! https://vsp-australia.com.au//memb/glaucoma_awareness.html #glaucomaweek2018

13.01.2022 We can all agree that having healthy eyes is important, but did you know that according to Vision 2020 Australia, 28% of Australians do not get an eye test regularly (every two years), with almost 50% of these people believing it is not a health priority. Lets clear the air on some of these misconceptions. Myth: Eye Tests are Unnecessary What most people dont know is that your optometrist can not only help detect serious eye diseases such as glaucoma, but also early signs ...of more serious diseases and conditions through a comprehensive vision assessment. Diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, thyroid diseases, and certain types of cancers can be detected through your eyes. Myth: Eye Tests and Glasses are Expensive Most eye tests are bulk billed through Medicare, so are at no extra charge to you. If after your comprehensive eye examination, your optometrist recommends prescription glasses, they will then discuss all the options available to you and find one to suit your needs. If your optometrist is a VSP Network Optometrist, then you can also receive additional benefits on your frames, and lenses.

12.01.2022 SMALL PRACTICE BIG ACHIEVERS Theyre only a team of three, but Lionel, Stephanie and Kerry at E Eye Place Port Coogee Optometrist have big plans and even bigger histories. Stephanie and I went to optometry school together, and were both qualified to practice optometry overseas. Kerry is our dispensing optician with a background in fashion and design. She really understands the technical and aesthetic aspects of eyewear, and loves helping you choose the right frames, not... only for you face, but also for your style and personality says practice owner Lionel. The practice got its unique name after owner Lionel overheard an elderly gentleman standing outside another optical store on the phone to his wife. The gentleman was trying to explain his location to his wife, repeatedly telling her that he was outside E Eye Place. The poor man was confusing the stores logo as part of the stores name! laughs practice owner Lionel. With Lionel and Kerry both parents, they often get to hear all the playground rumours, and some of their favourites are that you can get square eyes if you watch too much TV, or that sneezing with your eyes open means theyll fall out! Lionel also leaves us all with an interesting thought, what if our eyes could travel through time, so we could see the past and look into the future? Where would you go, and who would you want to see?

11.01.2022 Its often said that your eyes are the window to your soul, and some even believe that the colour of your eye reflects certain attributes you might possess, but the truth behind it all is much more interesting. The colour of your eyes depends on how much of the pigment melanin you have in your iristhe coloured part of your eyes. The more pigment you have, the darker your eyes will be. Blue, grey, and green eyes are lighter because they have less melanin in the iris. Most p...eople in the world will end up with brown eyes. The next most common colours are blue and grey, and green is the rarest colour. Besides giving our eyes colour, melanin helps protect them from the sun. Light eyes are much more sensitive to the suns harmful rays than darker eyes because they have less pigment. Ever-Changing Colours Newborn babies dont have melanin in their eyes, so they begin life with blue or almost colourless eyes. The melanin gradually increases, and by about three years of age, their eyes will have darkened to their true colour. Disease, trauma, and aging can lead to changes in eye colour. In fact, our eyes begin changing from the moment were born. Superstitions about Eye Colour Some interesting personality traits attributed to eye colour are: Blue-eyed people have rich imaginations. Those with green eyes have sharp minds. Hazel eyes indicate passionate souls. People with brown eyes are calm but have underlying passion. No matter your eye colour, its important to always protect your eyes when outdoors whether you need prescription or not. Make sure youre well equipped with a pair of sunglasses to reflect the suns harmful rays.

11.01.2022 Its the beginning of another year, and here at VSP Vision Care that means we get the opportunity to highlight another extraordinary practice. So, this month we shine the spotlight on Luke Farquhar EyeQ Optometrists Ballarat, Victoria. Although theyve only been in operation for two years, the team, which consists of Luke, Ashleigh and Brenda, thoroughly enjoy what they do and love the lasting impact theyre able to leave with the gift of healthy vision. If given the opport...unity, the team all agree that theyd find a cure to end macular degeneration. An eye disease, where as you age, the small centre portion of the retina, the macula, can begin to deteriorate. This causes progressive loss of centre vision. Its a horrible disease that can be so debilitating to someones quality of life, Ashleigh says. Theyre also one of our very first practices to take part in our partnership with the Lions Recycle for Sight program, and store owner Luke Farquhar says he feels honoured to be helping make a difference, not only to those who receive the frames, but also to the environment. These frames help people see and decrease landfill, one donation box at a time. So, if its time for a new pair of prescription glasses, or you need a new pair of sunnies for summer, pop in to the team at Luke Farquhar EyeQ Optometrists in Lucas. And when youve received your new specs, make sure to donate your old ones and help give someone else the gift of vision!

10.01.2022 We are pleased to present Spectacle Hub - Curlewis, our optometrist spotlight for the month of February. Although only fairly new, the close-knit practice already has a solid reputation of customer service, clinical excellence and expertise. For brothers and co-owners, Dr. Ahmed Azzam and Dr. Abdulla Azzam, as well as team members Lauren, Ashlyn, Alisha and Dr. Gina, being in the small town of Curlewis means that community is everything. The team agree they are more like fam...ily and share this energy and passion with every patient that walks through their doors. We love helping people, from our personal lives to our professional lives. Ensuring people are happy and well looked after is our number one priority. We find that taking the time to get to know our patients and really connecting with them is not only better for their long-term eye health, but its also much more fun say dispensers Lauren and Ashlyn. When asked what they would like to change about the human eye, the team had no shortage of interesting suggestions. From being able to see clearly underwater, to photochromatic eyes that tint when in the sun, to having chameleon eyes which can change to quickly react to the conditions and surroundings, the team at Spectacle Hub Curlewis had plenty of ideas! Even though the team is made up of artists, dancers, gym junkies and sports players the one thing they all have in common is their love for what they do. So, whether you want quality service, product knowledge or friendly smiles, Spectacle Hub Curlewis is your one stop shop.

09.01.2022 With the dawn of a new year, we often reflect on the year past, and resolve to better ourselves for the year ahead. We focus on aspects like our overall health and well-being, our careers and our social and personal goals, but we very rarely focus on the one thing that helps us see it all through, our eyes! Here are a few simple things we can do every day to take care of our eye health in 2020. 1. Keep up a Good Diet... These days its fairly easy to obtain the nutrients your eyes need through a healthy diet. For example, dark leafy greens, avocados, carrots, and fish, are all eye-friendly foods. Focusing on a balanced diet high in fruits and vegetables will help you ward off eye disease and keep your vision clear. Drinking plenty of water each day also helps to keep our organs working properly and it helps to maintain our tear quality. Our eyes are surrounded by fluid, which protects them by washing away debris and dust when we blink. Overall, staying hydrated is one aspect of nutrition that helps maintain a healthy balance of fluid around the eye. 2. Be Active You cant live a healthy lifestyle without being active. Did you know exercise is also a factor in maintaining healthy vision? Sticking to a regular fitness schedule can help prevent high blood pressure, diabetes, and many other conditions that can affect your eyes. Staying active and sticking to an exercise routine also cuts down on the time you spend with digital devices, which has become a growing concern for eye health. 3. Reduce Screen Time Staring at a phone, television, or computer screen can cause eye strain. Its important to give your eyes a break during the day. Practice the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break, and look at something at least 20 feet (6 meters) away. This trick should keep the strain on your eyes in check. To read more of these visionary new years resolutions as well as other interesting eye health content head to https://vsp-australia.com.au/

02.01.2022 Ever experienced a floater? Floaters are just tiny fibers that move around in the gel-like fluid, between the lens and retina in your eye. As they travel, they cast shadows on your retina, creating dark spots, or floaters. Believe it or not, theyre very common, and most of us will see floaters at some point in our lives, especially as we age. There are currently no medications available to treat floaters, but even without treatment, your brain may adjust and in time, you w...ont even notice them. However, unusual changes in your vision can be a sign that a more serious eye problem is present, so its recommended to visit your optometrist every year for a comprehensive eye test and be sure to mention it if youre noticing floaters or any other changes in your vision. If you want to know more about floaters, just get in touch.

01.01.2022 With all the smoke coming from the bushfires around the country, weve been well versed on the effects the smoke and haze can have on our general health. But did you know that symptoms affecting the eyes such as itching, red, burning and watery eyes can all be caused by smoky air conditions? Limit your exposure to smoke and prevent eye irritation with the following tips: - Use lubricating eye drops or artificial tears to keep your eyes refreshed and help get rid of dust and p...articles that can irritate eyes. - Dont rub your eyes. You might transfer dust and ash from your hands or face to your eyes and that could scratch or irritate them. - Wash your hands regularly. If you wear contacts, this is no time to skimp on your contact lens hygiene its always important to wash and dry your hands before handling contact lenses so that the surface of your lenses stay free of eye irritants. - Stay indoors. Particularly if you have an underlying condition that makes you more sensitive to the smoke, such as dry eye, its best to close the windows and stay indoors as much as possible. - Keep windows and doors closed to keep the air indoors clean. - Switch your air conditioner to recycle or recirculate to reduce smoke coming inside your home. - Take shelter at a local community library or shopping center if your home gets too hot to be comfortable, or if it is letting in outside air. If you believe you have an eye infection or injury, visit your local VSP optometrist to get medical attention as soon as possible. And, if you would like to donate to the Australian Red Cross to aid the bushfire relief effort, click "Donate" button below.
