24.01.2022 For those of you who have not yet witnessed the Humanity Star, time is running out. http://www.satview.org/spacejunk.php?sat_id=43168U
24.01.2022 How many of these products did you use when growing up?
22.01.2022 I read with interest Tenova HYLs work on high or pure hydrogen reduction and the effect on EAF operations, which of course requires a minimum carbon content. Still, if only the cheap hydrogen-producing technologies can be commercialised. Enjoy the festive season, everyone.
22.01.2022 Normality has at last returned to the iron ore maket, with alumina penalties now at least twice as much as silica penalties. We have been calculating alumina penalties of ~USD5/1% and silica penalties of ~USD2/1% since the middle of 2017, and now the major index providers are reporting similar numbers. So why did the market behave the opposite way for so long, penalising high silica producers unfairly? The demise of BHPs Yandi deposit shortly has been known for some time, ye...t it seems industry participants didnt take notice. Or didnt want to take notice. The outcomes bode well for Vales blended product, not so good for Rio Tintos Pilbara Blend. Producers like Atlas with low alumina and high silica should also benefit. The real question is what this will do (if anything) for the price differentials between high and low grade products. I have just co-authored a paper where it was stated that the large discounts of low grade products are seen as structural, and that Value-in-Use discussions tend to happen less in that market segment. Well, I was wrong, it seems. This latest news will make VIU discussions important again, with sophisticated metallurgical model outcomes now emulated in market behaviour.
22.01.2022 Lignite-based ironmaking. Interesting concept.
21.01.2022 I always struggle with customising Excel graphs. Today was the scale of the Y-axis for a stacked bar chart. Found this little gem that allows me to set the scale to include just the data, and not start at zero. My code is slightly different than that in the link, and works like a charm. https://peltiertech.com/link-excel-chart-axis-scale-to-val/
21.01.2022 When we published part of our work on emissions in 2013 I recall wondering how long it will take China to change their legislation. And now we know - they decided to go with a trading scheme, the least effective means of dealing with the issue. The gains made by other entities historically were much better with a combination of legislation and strict controls/monitoring, as well as incentives to change. And yes, I know that a trading scheme can be viewed as an incentive schem...e. Still, the mathematics was completed a few years ago, and the market behaves completely differently to predicted behaviour. And this modelling descrepancy has been providing me with headaches the last five months. Still, like Jason Nesmith said: "Never give up, never surrender".
18.01.2022 An old story but nice to hear it from the horses mouth.
18.01.2022 Survivorship bias. A useful concept to remember for any data analysis.
17.01.2022 Hancock Prospecting disclosed mid-week its 19.96% stake in Western Australian-based iron ore producer, Atlas Iron (Hancock Prospecting, 14.97%; Hancocks Redstone Corp., 4.99%), a week after Fortescue Metals announced that it too had built a substantial stake (19.9%) in Atlas Iron, sufficient to block a A$280m takeover of Atlas by Mineral Resources. 17.01.2022 Fascinating website containing a lot of good data. Malthusian Economy is a term I have not heard in a few years. Worth the read.
17.01.2022 Merry Christmas, everyone.
16.01.2022 An interesting technology to turn process offgas into fuel, reducing steel making carbon footprint in the process. Microbes feeding on carbon monoxide and secreting bio-ethanol.
15.01.2022 A travel day in China. Beautiful blue sky in Beijing.
14.01.2022 Last year we struggled for six months with a machine that did not perform to patented design specs. This was the reason. The Coriolis effect. If this is the effect over six meters, imagine the effect at higher longitudes.
13.01.2022 Happy and prosperous year of the pig, everyone!
12.01.2022 2018 has been a fairly quiet year, with >70% of available time spent on multiple projects with one client. 2019 looks to be an interesting year as multiple projects develop into execution phase. May your 2019 be prosperous, successful and happy.
09.01.2022 Converting non-linear thermodynamic equations to linear form for use in a simplex model - in the end it was surprisingly simple. My client will now get one of the worlds most sophisticated iron ore Value in Use models. The most sophisticated lives in my head, and one day my programming skills will hopefully catch up to the creativity.
09.01.2022 When the crocs in Townsville get out of the water, that is something!
09.01.2022 Two weeks of complex modelling is doing my head in. Luckily the end is in sight.
08.01.2022 Happy new year, eveyone! Image courtesy englishintaiwan.com.
07.01.2022 Get your metallurgical geek on with this nifty slag viscosity calculator. Nice work, guys!
07.01.2022 Its been a while since a new model has been developed in HSC Chemistry. Now working on a straight grate pelletizing model, as well as a unique mathematical aporoach to refine an existing model. I do wish I paid more attention to numerical methods in university...
07.01.2022 Not relevant to us, but an interesting take on an old dilemma.
07.01.2022 Indian fines of 56% Fe are selling at ~USD55/DMT today, with sea sand of the same Fe content at USD38/DMT. The sea sand (titanomagnetite) suppliers really have no negotiating power, it seems. In better news, the issuing of 148 new scrap processing permits in China on Friday is sure to improve scrap recovery in 2020 and reduce scrap prices. As reference, Turkish scrap prices have been reported recently at USD301, with Shanghai heavy scrap at USD389/t.
06.01.2022 Not doing a risk assessment has consequences.
06.01.2022 Some of these videos were on my forklift training course. Most of these incidents are entirely predictable.
05.01.2022 It took two months to get access to all the required data to model this part of a limestone and dolomite circuit properly. But now it works and can be used to predict the plant performance accurately. The model outcomes also saved the client a few million dollars, so in the end it was worth the wait.
04.01.2022 I recently performed some iron ore test work and one of the control parameters was pressure readings on lots of gauges. Which made me wonder; how are they made? The modern information era is fascinating. Only two decades ago I would have had to read a book to know this. Fortunately I can still read a book.
04.01.2022 After much practice on classical simplex method problems, the light bulb finally went on and work has commenced on a linear programming model of a steelworks for a client. It has been a while since I used one of these, and I am looking forward to seeing the end result on screen of what is now in my brain. And for those of you that dont know, the simplex method always finds the global optimum solution, rather than the first local optimum with non-linear methods. When you do ...this for a Value in Use calculation you can get some magical results. The next challenge is modelling non-linear thermodynamics with the simplex method.
04.01.2022 Teaching a variety of methods has real value.
03.01.2022 When Isaac Newton first formulated the theory of gravity, I wonder if he realised the possibilities of applying the theory. Here we have magnetite (black) being separated from pyroxenes (green) and quartz (white) on a Wilfley table.
02.01.2022 This is an interesting small-scale result at producing solid carbon (graphite) from CO2 using a liquid metal process.
02.01.2022 I designed a closed-circuit ball mill and hydro-cyclones last week as part of a much larger project. This morning I was suddenly curious whether there are any good videos on Youtube on the critical speed in a ball mill. I was not disappointed.
01.01.2022 Happy new year, everyone.
