24.01.2022 A big Shire. Spent a whole day this week towing a mobile site office out to the Shires western boundary 160 km due west of Springsure. 105 kilometres of dirt that has to be treated with due caution if you value your vehicle. The top end of the Carnarvon Gorge is in the background of this temporary work site while the road gets some work done to it.

23.01.2022 Typhoon no match for flash flood. Facebook-famous Ford caught out in flash flood finally finds its way home on our truck. The whole of the under side is jammed up with mud and straw. It was locked up with water inside - boy does it stink. Motor has issues.

23.01.2022 Lumpy Roads continued - On Friday we got to tow a ute with a broken chassis from Emerald to Charters Towers. Towing a caravan the ute came to grief near Rolleston after hitting one too many severe dips. Just behind the cab the chassis was torn on one side and folded on the other. Sorry no photos - stupid me somehow managed to delete them.

23.01.2022 WHY ?? Todays job raised 2 questions. Q.1. Why travel during the night unless you really must? In my experience in this part of CQ it is not a matter of IF but WHEN you are going to have an unfortunate run in with the jumpy wildlife.... Q.2. Why do Emergency Services disconnect the battery of a car that has been in an accident and the airbags have already gone off? From a recovery point of view it just makes our job harder as many new cars will not let you shift the transmission from Park without the battery connected. Am I missing something here?

21.01.2022 Towing Transport Containers With necessary changes to how we operate we are here to help. For now we can not have any passengers in the truck as I am on the edge of the vulnerable group. Also any vehicle we load will be disinfected by us.... Container sales have been strong for a while now BUT stock is becoming scarce and no-one can tell me when I will be able to get more. Containers for Rent are still available. Stay safe everyone and please remember the old saying "treat others as you would like to be treated yourself".

21.01.2022 We bin busy. Relocating scrap metal recycling bins has kept us busy this week.

19.01.2022 Aussies at their best. Been busy as this past week but 2 jobs stick out because the people involved were just the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. Loading a water tank at Nu-tanks in Rocky two of their staff were most helpful - sorry I didnt get their names but well done with customer services way beyond the norm.... I also delivered 2 New Built containers to a farm 100km northeast of Clermont. The caretaker couple went out of their way to help. I enjoyed a cuppa and a chat (albeit socially distant) to round out an exceptionally busy week. Stay safe everyone.

19.01.2022 Mini Containers. Spent the last 2 days delivering 2 mini containers (standard width but just 8ft long) from Townsville to the Labona mine camp. This camp is being set up for the Adani mine.

17.01.2022 8-5-2-1 = all in a day's work. 8 new Kubota tractors delivered. 5 loads, 5 trips. 2 destinations, 2 happy farmers. 1 happy Vulcan Tilt client, 1 happy driver, 1 day well spent I reckon !

17.01.2022 Qantas History taken for a ride today. Todays cargo was a Qantas motorised air-stair on its way for some much needed TLC. My guess is it is about 60 years old and probably goes back to the days of DC3s, DC4s and even Constellations.

17.01.2022 Rain still needed. Yesterday we had a job to pick up some gear from a farm that borders Lake Maraboon. The following photos show the level at 19% and the length of the channel they had to cut to access the water. If the dam was full there would be water right at my feet. 19% of a big dam is still a lot of water but gee it would be good to see some more rain.

17.01.2022 Gulf Country. In a first for me, I did a job up into the Gulf Country this week. A container of household goods from Emerald to Normanton was the assignment. Must say it was very quiet on the road and I needed a permit to enter Carpentaria Shire. Interestingly the roads got better and the diesel was a lot cheaper as soon as I got away from Emerald - go figure ! ... The road from Croydon to Normanton is a a true highway - smooth and 110kph rated - something us in CQ can only dream about.

16.01.2022 Taking myself for a ride (sort of) . . . . Our truck needed some work done on it so back to RGM Mackay for a couple of days. Took our ute with me so I could get around while waiting on the truck. Downside was a welcome bit of rain so now I have 2 vehicles to clean.

15.01.2022 The ongoing operation of this business is dedicated to honouring the memory of my wife and business partner of 39.5 years. Vale Jan Laugher (nee Savige) 25/3/52 to 17/8/20. . . . . .

15.01.2022 Big Red called . . . . . . . An urgent call came through on Monday and we were able to help. So, just after lunch we set off to swap a Generator at the Birdsville Big Red Bash. The site is right at the bottom of the well known Big Red Dune 40 km out of Birdsville. We got the swap done by 2.00pm on Tuesday and got back to Windorah for a good nights sleep before the final leg back to Emerald today (Wednesday).... 1200 km each way with a lot of single lane bitumen and 280 km of dirt. I took extra fuel and a second spare tyre but didnt need either. And I ticked a couple of items off my bucket list.

14.01.2022 Old School Tow Truck taken for a ride today.Got to say the newer tilt and slide trays are so much easier, quicker and safer to use.

14.01.2022 Tilt and Slide trays have been around for a lot longer than I thought. Today I was shown a cart with a tilt and slide tray. Has to be more than 100 years old. Wood spoke wheels , wood frame and wood tray with a clever metal slide rail with a winch and retainer system. Photos dont do it justice. I took a container out to a property near Jericho and got asked if Id like a look at their huge collection - rooms and rooms and sheds and sheds of our Central Queensland history. It all blew me away. WOW

13.01.2022 Back on the road again - The roo strike had us off the road for 2 weeks but on the up side we got to spend 6 days with our adorable Granddaughter Olivia and the rest of our family. Containers were big last week. Two went out to a local Coal Mine for storage whilst they refurbish the decor of their village. Another two were delivered to Woorabinda to assist in the animal proofing of their air strip. And another 20 footer is on its way to help a family relocate from Dysart.

13.01.2022 Rent a Reefer We have been renting 20ft containers for a while now. We have both GP (8ft6in high) and HC (Hicube - 9ft6in high) stock ready to hire held here in Emerald. But did you know that we can also rent out 20ft Reefers as they are known - fridge / freezer containers with a temperature range from +20 to -20 degrees. You need a 3 phase 32 amp power supply for these units. As with all rentals, conditions do apply.

13.01.2022 Our Newest Recruit. Got to give our newest recruit a run through on the truck. She passed with flying colours but as shes our Granddaughter she always will. We had a lovely week with our visitors from the cold of Canberra.

13.01.2022 Mouse vs BT50 ute - mouse wins. Just picked up a burnt out BT50 ute. In less than a minute smoke from the behind the dash turned into a raging inferno hot enough to melt glass and mag wheels - just enough time to pull up and run from the fire. Two days ago this was a much loved one-owner ute in mint condition. Prime suspect is a mouse. Believe it or not - a mouse ran away from the wreck as I was loading it onto the truck.... Any one got any ideas on how to keep mice out of farm vehicles, especially this time of year as it starts to cool down a bit?

12.01.2022 For our Customers who may not know - It is now 3 weeks since my wife of 39.5 years and the love of my life passed away unexpectedly at home. I thank my close friends who have supported me since. Covid rules are making a difficult time even worse by delaying a full family get-together. I intend to keep the business going but Im sure you will understand if you havent been able to track me down in recent times.... VALE: Jan Laugher (nee Savige) 25/3/52 to 17/8/20. A Memorial Celebration of Jans life will be held at a later (unrestricted) date.

11.01.2022 The harder you work the luckier you get. "Some ones lucky day" was a casual comment by a bystander as I was delivering 5 new tractors and a Buggy to a local horticulture business today. This comment bought back to me the above maxim. From humble beginning the food growing business has grown to be a big operation now. Good luck to them I say. Heres hoping they keep growing and go from strength to strength.

10.01.2022 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of a busy week. Two long trips this past week - early trip to Brisbane and then a late week trip to Ravenshoe. GOOD 1 - Took a magnificent big boys toy for a trip. ... GOOD 2 - Had a magnificent breakfast at the Greenvale Roadhouse yesterday morning. Its nothing much to look at from the outside but the service and the food was 10 out of 10. If you are ever up that way do yourself a favour and enjoy a break. BAD 1 - Without a doubt the worst roads I travelled were in Central Queensland. On this front Lachlan Miller you get a big FAIL. BAD 2 - dearest diesel all week was right here in Emerald. And why oh why is diesel 3 cents a litre dearer at the Caltex Roadhouse than it is in town ? ? ? UGLY - The oversize load of mining gear I took from Sapphire to Ravenshoe was the ugliest load I have ever carried. I didnt take a photo as I dont want a reminder. The trip was incident free and I enjoyed travelling some roads up north that I hadnt been on before.

10.01.2022 Shipping Containers ready to go . . . . . With the end of the financial year fast approaching enquiries about the Shipping Containers we have for sale have increased. We still have a good range in stock in our Display Yard next to Vanderfields John Deere on the corner of the Gregory Hwy and Hawkins Place. If you are unfamiliar with Emerald this is on the northside past the Racecourse as you head towards Capella. Each container has a label on the front doors and a quick pho...ne call to me on 0418 271 655 will get you the pricing. Delivery is free in the Emerald area and is discounted for further afield.Feel free to have a good look through our range. We also have a good selection of 20ft Containers for rent.

09.01.2022 How Many Shipping Containers can we legally carry on our 7.5 metre tilt tray? The obvious answer is just one 20 footer. But wait we can also carry 2 of 10 footers. And, we can also carry 1 of 20 footer with 2 of 8 footers tucked inside it. They are a tight fit into a standard container but are easier to get inside a HC (Hicube) container which is 1 foot higher. Photos dont lie. I guess in a roundabout way I have just announced we now have a 8ft container and another 20 ft Economy Grade 3 Container in stock. The 8 foot ones make for a secure but easily-shifted backyard shed.

09.01.2022 Lumpy Tyre for Lumpy CQ Roads The trip home from Mackay yesterday got interesting till I found a spot to safely pull up. Thankfully I got to change this tyre from the front drivers side of the truck BEFORE it blew out.

08.01.2022 Shite CQ Roads. It goes without saying that the roads in CQ are as bad as anywhere. Not that I needed a reminder but this week I discovered a crack in the fuel tank caused by 4 and a bit years of the truck being flexed constantly on the lumpy roads that are my workplace. I know the roads are mostly built over black soil but we are well overdue for some maintenance. ... Thanks to Ben and the crew at All Time Diesel for the repair and the lesson on how to safely weld a fuel tank.

08.01.2022 Turned a wheel in every direction this week - Started the week with a Genset back from a Blackwater coal mine then collected a kangaroo-damaged ute from German Creek. Next a rear-ended SUV from Gindie to Rocky with a Container on the return trip. Wednesday was a repaired ute to Moranbah and a Skidsteer off to a building site in E-town. Thursday was the kangaroo-damaged ute to Mackay and to finish the week off it was off to Longreach to pickup a Skidsteer for delivery to Rocky next week. My week done and dusted. The new roof over the 747 and the Constellation at Longreach is pretty special.

07.01.2022 The Great Emerald Fuel Rip-off Continues Unabated. ENOUGH - methinks it is time for a bit of consumer revolt. I have done a fair bit of travel for work in recent weeks and are really pissed off by the fuel prices in Emerald compared to just about anywhere else. I emailed BP today (www.talk2bp.com.au) as I paid 18 cents more per litre in Emerald this arvo than I did in Rocky this morn for their Ultimate Diesel. I have also lodged a complaint with the ACCC via the web and I ema...iled Lachlan Miller who promptly replied this is a federal issue and has forwarded my complaint to Ken ODowd. If you feel the same as I do feel free to send off a barrage of emails. If they dont get a result maybe a blockade might be next. Lifes tough enough at present without this blatant price gouging. . . . . . . . . .

07.01.2022 Jeepers - this was close

06.01.2022 Scenic recovery. In a break from the usual highway trips, we recovered a crashed ute from the top of the Blackdown Tablelands this morning. Had to concentrate on the narrow road on the way up but got to take in the (hazy) view once I got to the lookout.

04.01.2022 Tonka toys not doing it for you any more? Might be time for this Kubota ultimate sandpit toy. But "better get a bigger sandpit" LOL

03.01.2022 Enjoyable. Delivering a new "toy" is always enjoyable.

03.01.2022 Deliver a classic car to the Gold Coast. No worries I said. BUT as we left Toowoomba the sky was black as. We sat under an overpass near Ipswich for 20 mins to be sure and dodged all but a bit of rain. Ute was safely garaged 15 mins before a hailstorm. Methinks we dodged a bullet......

03.01.2022 Beware of CQ roads. Todays task was to recover a rolled 4WD and caravan. A very lumpy bit of the Dawson Hwy just north of Rolleston was the scene. Thankfully no significant injuries but a change of undies would have been in order for the occupants after both the 4WD and the caravan rolled. The caravan is now in many more pieces that were used to assemble it when new. Thanks to Rolleston Police and CHRC Council workers for cleaning up what must have been like a bomb site.... So to the Qld Government I say isnt it time you fixed the roads in this area instead of just lowering the speed limit where it is obviously substandard.

03.01.2022 No rhyme or reason - I was only saying to my wife last week that it is months since weve done a job from Emerald to Mackay. Well, we fixed that with 3 trips in the past 6 days. You just cant pick it ! - and this is another reason why I love my job.

02.01.2022 Long Overdue . . . . . Good to see that work is to start soon on Lilyvale Rd. My kidneys have had enough punishment. Just got to get something happening on the highways now. (I took some worksite gear out there yesterday.)

02.01.2022 Even tow trucks are not immune from kangaroo damage. This was a first for me after more than 750,000km in Vulcan No.1 and this one (No. 2) - the tow truck had to be rescued after a roo took out the radiator and the fan assembly. Bullbar stopped any panel damage but could have been designed to be a bit lower to stop the bottom of the radiator taking a direct hit. Thanks to John for rescuing me, Eric for rescuing the truck and Rob for delivering the container I had on board when this happened.

01.01.2022 Beware lowlifes are everywhere. Yesterday we recovered what was left of a broken down Pulsar from just off the Capricorn Hwy at the top of the Gogango Range. As if backpackers stranded in Australia because of the virus arent doing it hard enough, some lowlife has taken to their car after they left it because of a split radiator. Unfortunately all that was left was taken to the wreckers. I feel for the 3 young Italian lads but they remain upbeat.... Heres hoping a big dose of Karma catches up with the lowlife(s) who did this.

01.01.2022 Lilyvale Road wins the Vulcan Tilt Lumpiest Road Award hands down. Imagine what the driver of this car felt like after hitting a large unsighted industrial size battery on the road on his way to work this morning at around 5am. It happened on Lilyvale Rd about 12 km from the Gregory Hwy. The road gets our award for being the lumpiest bitumen road in the Emerald area. Lowered speed limit and cones marking the worst spots shows that someone in authority is aware of this shocke...r SO WHY HASNT IT BEEN FIXED ??? Try driving it in a Tilt Tray truck - you spend more time off the seat than on it even at a much reduced speed. This road accesses Kestrel and Gregory Coal Mines - if they are fair-dinkum about their employees safety they should be exerting their influence to get their main access fixed. The owner of this car is stuck with a huge repair bill because of this lumpy road.Three radiators to be replaced plus body damage and who knows what the exposure to battery acid will cause. I took the time to give the car a thorough wash as it was sprayed with battery acid as it smashed into the battery. There is a huge white acid-burn mark on the road for all to see.

01.01.2022 Now for a load just a bit different to our usual fare - Totally refurbished underground air-operated tracked drill delivered to a local coal mine on Monday. It arrived in Emerald in many pieces but looks like new now.

01.01.2022 Every picture tells a story. My over-active mind has come up with many captions for the photo, most of them unprintable. I got to drive a Police Car today, if only to load it on our truck and then unload it after taking it for a ride. I might be well into my 7th decade BUT the boy in me just had to test the siren.
