25.01.2022 One of the Talking Horses interviews on Wednesday 25th November will be with Sharleen Jordan BSc Dip Ed Dip LGA, an ASL2 (Advanced Skills Lecturer) Lecturer and Local Government/Animal Studies at Central Regional TAFE. She has been conducting training for the Local Government and Animal sectors since 1996. Sharleen is on the WA Rangers Association committee and represents them on the executive of the Australian Institute of Animal Management committee. She has a vast international network of officers and through this network is able to uphold her principle of teaching Current International Best Practice with a strong focus on Animal Welfare and Occupational Health and Safety. Sharleen will be discussing some of the rights and obligations of dog owners set out in the 1976 Dog Act, which addresses the control and registration of dogs; the ownership and keeping of dogs; and the obligations and rights of dog owners. Fines for barking excessively range from $200 to $5,000. Penalties for dog attacks range from $3,000 to $20,000 and can also include potential imprisonment. Leaving dog droppings can incur a fine, and all dogs should have been microchipped by 1 November 2015. Dangerous dogs can be of any breed; however, some breeds are more prone to attacking than others. Measures are in place to increase the safety of the community and to ensure that the owners take increased responsibility for dogs that are known to be potentially dangerous. Some breeds have been declared restricted in Australia. Each local government is able to introduce local laws on a range of matters for dog control including specified dog exercise areas and the number of dogs allowed to be kept at a premise. See more

24.01.2022 Talking Horses special guest on 91.3 Sport fm on Wednesday 9th September between 6 and 7pm, will be Glen Potter. After 43 years with the WA Police Force and being in charge of the Police Mounted Section Glen Potter finally retired from the force and started his own business supplying horses to film and television. Glen also spent 3 years as the head of the police canine section and is able to bring canine trainers and movie dogs into the business model. Glen has been g...reatly influenced by well known movie horseman Heath Harris of NSW. Heath, until recently, was the "go to" man for movie horses, not only in Australia but internationally. Glen met Heath during his time in the Mounties when Heath was training horses for the NSW Police Mounted Unit. On the advice of Heath, Glen began taking lessons in acting, attending workshops, learning the trade from the ground up. A number of short film roles came his way, including a nomination for acting in a short film "The Long Goodbye." Glen, with his good friend and rodeo team-roping partner, Lawyer Elise Croft, started Working Horse Productions Pty Ltd, which includes actors mounts, cart horses, background horses, liberty and playing dead horses. All horses had to tolerate camels at close distances, handle noise such as gunfire and be safe for actors who were non-riders. The venture was a complete success with the film now currently part of the official selection for the Venice Film Festival, the most prestigious film festival in the world. See more

22.01.2022 On Wednesday 8th July between 6 and 7pm Talking Horses on 91.3Sportfm will be talking to Michelle Rouffignac a Registered and Accredited Veterinary Nurse. She has been a nurse for 27 years and in 2016 took on the role as the Coordinator for the Community Blood Bank at The Animal Hospital Murdoch University. Michelle has provided a number of presentations to veterinary nurses around the country on various aspects of cat and dog blood donor processes and the clinical aspec...t of animals requiring blood product transfusions. Just like humans, if cats & dogs loose blood due to trauma, or become anaemic, undergo major surgery or get cancer, they can require a blood transfusion to survive. The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University treats many critically ill cats at its emergency clinic and the availability of blood often determines whether the animal lives or dies, in the past they haven't always had the blood available when they need it, and it's so important for their ability to care for critically ill cats. In some emergencies they need to administer it rapidly. The Hospital decided to set up a community blood donor program to boost and safeguard its supplies. On a small scale they operate a facility like the Red Cross does for human medicine. Cats & dogs have different blood types and can donate 3 5 times per year. They currently have 40 pet cats and 45 pet dogs on their register. The facility is the only clinic in Western Australia to separate cat blood into red blood cells and plasma providing the highest level of care they possibly can for cats in need of transfusions. Challenges in vet hospitals over these past months in caring for peoples loved pets, have increased due to the Covid 19 social distancing requirements What does a donor look like? Furry, friendly and full of Super Hero! See more

20.01.2022 Talking Horses has two special guests on 91.3Sportfm, Wednesday 6th May from 6pm. Kate Herren is an equestrian journalist and the volunteer press officer for Perth Horse Trials Association. Originally from the UK, Kate held the position of Consulting Editor of the British Eventing Life magazine for eight years. She has also written features for a wide range of leading equestrian titles in Australia and the UK including Horse and Hound and An Eventful Life. She continues to ...produce features and news content for the membership magazine of the sport of eventing in the UK which has over 15,000 subscribers. A graduate of equine science, Kate now runs her own business offering copy writing and marketing services to small businesses in Perth from her home in the Perth Hills. For the past 2 years, Kate has been a member of the Perth Horse Trials Association committee, helping the volunteer-led group to run 2 events a year at the Wooroloo Prison Farm. Kate will be talking about new research into equine vision which was conducted in the UK by Professor Martin Stevens. His work explains more about how horses view cross country fences since they have dichromatic vision which mutes some colours. He found that horses distinguish yellow, white and some shades of blue quite clearly, and he suggests that they may struggle to distinguish the traditional colours used in cross country fences like browns and greens. Advances in this area continue to inform cross country design as officials endeavour to improve safety statistics and focus on equine welfare. Our second interview will be with Leesa Kingi whose French Bulldog had a litter of puppies with one having a cleft palate. She was given the choice to euthanise or tube feed the puppy, and as euthansia was never an option, Leesas breeder introduced her to Kellie De Rosa who became her mentor and friend and helped her through one of the hardest and most rewarding 6 weeks of her life. Leesa learnt that this defect was extremely common and the majority of puppies were put to sleep at birth, and 6 months later she and Kellie Co Founded No Pup Cleft Behind NPCB Most vets and breeders will tell you to euthanise your cleft pallet pup at birth, and for good reason. They understand the time and money that will be required to perform the essential surgery to rescue these pups from their inevitable suffering If they dont receive the necessary medical treatment, they will most likely suffer a slow death due to starvation. A puppy with a cleft palate is unable to form and hold a suction on their mother's nipple to draw down the milk. If they do get any milk into their mouth, they then run the risk of suffocation, sinusitis NPCB is a small not for profit registered charity with a dedicated team of volunteers that perform around the clock care for puppies who are born with a cleft palate.
20.01.2022 Dr Kathy Klein BS DVM will be Talking Horses guest on 91.3Sportfm Wednesday 10th June between 6 and 7pm, and will be talking about the significant advances that have occurred in the provision of veterinary services since the Veterinary Surgeons Act came into force in the 1960s. The Act provides for the registration of veterinary surgeons and for the regulation of standards of professional conduct in the provision of acts of veterinary surgery in WA. A new Act is needed to... meet future challenges in the provision of veterinary services. Over the past decade, most other states have modernised their legislation on veterinarians and veterinary premises. WA now differs in several important regulatory provisions, including national recognition of veterinary registration, the ownership of veterinary premises, and the ability of the board to mediate minor disciplinary conflict without a huge legal process. The Veterinary Surgeons Board is structured to protect the rights of the public, the veterinary profession and most of all, ultimately the care and welfare of animals in Western Australia. Dr Kathy Klein will be discussing the changes made in the new Bill and the possible effects on the equine industry. For over 30 years, Dr Kathy Klein operated WAs first independent mobile equine veterinary practice. A graduate of the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, she received her Bachelor of Animal Science in 1981 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1985. Kathy came to Australia as the inaugural overseas intern at Murdoch University Veterinary Hospital in 1985, completing her internship/residency in Equine Medicine & Surgery there in 1990. For 15 years, she has been a pivotal member (now Vice President) of the West Australian Horse Council, responsible for the Welfare and Research Portfolios, and has represented the Council on the West Australian Committee for Animal Welfare in Emergencies (CAWE/DPIRD), reviewing the Animal Welfare Act 2002 and preparing a submission for the Veterinary Practice Bill 2020. 15.01.2022 The Talking Horses 91.3Sportfm weekly radio program on Wednesday 27th May will be talking to Dr Kirsten Jackson BSc BVMS (Hons) MANZCVS (Equine Dentistry) about what is involved in Equine Dentistry. Kirsten grew up with horses and competed throughout school and university. She completed her Membership examinations in Equine Dentistry at the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientist and is currently completing her PhD, conducting research into equine periph...eral dental caries (tooth decay). Kirsten has published papers in numerous leading journals and has lectured nationally and internationally on her research and on general equine dentistry. In 2017 Dental Vet opened WAs first and only equine veterinary dentistry clinic in Forrestdale, allowing the facilitation of more advanced dental procedures for horses in WA, (root canals and fillings) as well as professional routine dentistry. A huge amount has changed in equine dentistry over the last 15 years. From what used to be rasp off a few sharp bits while the terrified horse was backed into a corner, to now realising how much pathology and pain horses have been dealing with, that was previously going undiagnosed. The most serious and painful pathology (deep infection between the teeth, dead, infected, abscessed teeth) can ONLY be seen with a powerful light and mirror or endoscope, they cannot be felt so if the dental provider is just feeling and rasping off the sharp bits then serious, painful pathology will be missed. Kirsten is a volunteer committee member on Animal Aid Abroad, a charity that helps working animals around the world and has travelled to the Gili islands in Indonesia many times to assist the working ponies there. She also provides assistance and advice to veterinarians in developing countries. Kirsten enjoys teaching and continuing the research while running Dental Vet and entertaining her 20 month old daughter! See more

Pony Club activities included overnight trail rides, rodeo riding and mustering sheep, cattle and horses, Jenni particularly enjoyed eventing, show jumping and games, which included rescue race barrel racing and competition was fierce. Jenni also obtained her Pony Club B certificate. At the age of 12 Jenni broke in and trained her first pony ‘Borana’ who arrived on a truck from Mardathoona Station Studying at university saw an end to horse riding after nearly failing due to being at a Pony Club A certificate camp at Muresk, instead of the university library studying. After graduating as a dentist, she moved to Kununurra in the East Kimberley working firstly for the WA Health Dept and then as a private practitioner. Spare time was spent on water skiing, occasionally mustering cattle and training stock horses. Jenni then spent more than a decade working and travelling throughout Europe and in 1992 embarked on a 35000km bicycle journey from the north coast of Alaska to the southern coast of South America. Jenni’s children embraced the equine lifestyle and borrowed a pony or 2 and joined the Gidgegannup Pony Club. Then transferred to Swan Valley HPC where Jenni developed a keen interest in Tetrathlon. She joined the Pony Club WA Tetrathlon committee and soon became Chair. The new and enthusiastic committee aligned WA rules with the PCA national Rules and introduced laser pistols. Exemptions for the National Championships in Sydney 2019 were allowed for the first time, allowing 17 WA Tetrathlete competitors to ride borrowed horses at the Pony Club championships. A first ever achievement. Jenni remains an active supporter of Swan Valley HPC and is her twin daughters most enthusiastic groom and support crew. She is also a volunteer bush fire fighter with East Swan BFS Jenni has a keen interest in animal welfare and in 2018 qualified in Emergency ‘Technical Large Animal Rescue’ courses run by WA Horse Council. Her ambition is to be part of a team of qualified volunteers who are well equipped and able to be deployed when needed. Jenni currently lives in Broome filling her spare time walking on Cable Beach rescuing sea snakes and baby turtles and supporting Kimberley Wild Horses.
13.01.2022 Clare dEspeissis will be our second interview on Talking Horses, from 6pm on Wednesday 13th May, Clare will be talking about the annual two day Busselton Winter Jumping Festival, which was planned for the 2020 annual Western Australia Day weekend in June and has been hosted by Busselton Horse and Pony Club Inc. for about 16 years. The festival has grown from a small local show to an integral part of the WA Equestrian Calendar, with local and intrastate competitors competing... over well designed courses on some of the best arenas in WA. Unfortunately, there will be no 2020 competition due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Excitingly though, planning is underway for 2021! The Festival is coordinated by a subcommittee of Busselton Horse and Pony Club, which are elected at the AGM each year, and has wide support from the club and local community. In 2019, nearly 40 sponsors supported the event, 7 of their sponsors have supported the Festival since it began! The organizing committee highly value their ongoing relationships with their sponsors. This event is the major fundraiser for the Busselton Horse and Pony Club and allows them to provide ongoing quality instruction in riding, horse care and safe equipment for their young riders. Four years ago grants were received from the State government and the City of Busselton which enabled the installation of reticulation and laser levelling of both arenas. The Festival attracts around 125 competitors from as far away as Geraldton to Esperance. The main arena caters for the more experienced riders and horses with heights up to 1.35m and includes qualifiers for EWA Novice, Silver, Bronze and Jumping Horse of the Year championships. The second arena has classes up to 1.04m, for novice competitors and riders upwards from 6 years old. The main event on Saturday is the Pony Grand Prix and Sunday has the very popular and exciting Chase Me Charlie which always draws crowds who are amazed at the heights reached. There are 32 classes and apart from prize money, there are trophies and 10 rugs are awarded. One of these rugs goes to the leading Hi-Point Off the Track Thoroughbred, a section which attracts nearly 40 entrants. A festival atmosphere is enhanced with excellent camping facilities, coffee vans, food, local wine and beer and a busy equestrian retail village. See more

Unfortuna...tely the breed is on the critical list of rare breeds in the UK and around the World with less than 300 in the latest figures. The Cleveland Bay breed is an ideal mount in these times due to their being a low maintenance breed with the constitution of a shetland pony and having blue black hooves that rarely need shoes. They make great family share horses due to their unflappable temperament and trainability. Brenda says to maintain the numbers in this country, It is apparent that a group or foundation needs to be set up, so tax deductible contributions can be made.
