18.01.2022 COVID-19 ADVICE BASED ON CURRENT GUIDELINES Australian Government and Medicare COVID-19 website links are provided in the comments if anyone wants to look at or...iginal sources. The original version of this post was written last night by my friend Andrew, a Sydney GP (tagged in the comments). TESTING CRITERIA The only people who CURRENTLY need a swab for COVID-19 diagnosis are the following (this may be updated going forward): - People in contact with a known case of COVID-19 - People who have traveled back from overseas in the last 14 days who have respiratory symptoms - Health care workers with respiratory symptoms, although check with your hospital first as this may be a resource allocation issue STAY AWAY FROM THE GP CLINIC AND EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT - If you have mild viral respiratory symptoms (you should self isolate until your symptoms pass) - If you are well and your issue can wait (book to see your doctor in a few weeks) PHONE AND VIDEO CONSULTS WITH YOUR GP - The government has now allowed GPs to consult with certain patient populations over the phone or via Telehealth to reduce the amount of patients present to the clinic. - Its only the eligible for the following patient groups: 1) over 70 years old 2) if youre pregnant 3) parents of a child under 12 months 4) a person under treatment for chronic health conditions 5) immunocompromised patients 6) Aboriginal/Torres strait islander over 50 years 7) if youre isolated at home under instruction from a GP and meet the testing criteria - The GP must have seen you within the last 12 months (cant work for a GP youve never seen before) - Call your doctors receptionist to ask about this. EMPLOYERS - Dont ask your employees to attend the GP to get a CLEARANCE to return to work. Read the guidelines and if they dont meet the testing criteria, and their symptoms have resolved then they can return to work. Doctors cant clear a patient for work - we dont have enough testing reagent to test everyone. TEACHERS - Youre doing an awesome job! - If children or staff have any respiratory symptoms (cough, sore throat, runny nose etc) then send them home and instruct them to self isolate until they are symptom free. - If at all possible, avoid asking them to see the GP for clearance, as this is very difficult to do and just wastes the GPs time. - Have all students wash their hands as they enter the classroom with alcohol wash for 20 seconds of rubbing, or soap and water if practical (e.g. a science classroom with basins). - Wash your own hands before and after each lesson. Youll want to use soap and water after every second class as alcohol wipe feels icky on your hands after a while. - Avoid touching your face - Avoid shaking hands with anyone. Bump elbows instead or wave or give an air thumbs up. - Manage your classroom by wiping down all desks, door handles and shared objects (computers, learning supplies) after every class. - Wipe down chairs, light switches and other surfaces at least twice a day. - Rearrange your desks to create more spaces between students, and to avoid them facing each other. The principle is a 1.5m radius if possible, but this is difficult to achieve. Aim for all desks facing forward with space between. - Reduce the amount of things on display. Clear your teacher desk, clear shelves (put things into cupboards) of things that are not necessary. These things are just more places for the virus to sit and more things to wipe clean. - Structure lessons to avoid group work, and avoid use of toys, shared books etc if possible. - Wash your clothes after every day, and shower when you get home. THE MAJOR PRINCIPLES - If youve returned to Australia from overseas, then isolate yourself at home for 14 days. - If you have a respiratory illness then self isolate until symptoms resolve. Wear a surgical mask to avoid transmission when around others (including family). - If you are well then stay home, dont visit nursing homes, dont attend large events, avoid seeing our oldies. Order takeaway from your favourite restaurant and eat it at home to support local businesses. Grocery shop online where possible. Go to work and return home. Go for a walk in the fresh air. Thats it. - Try to maintain a 1.5m distance from others. - Wash hands with soap and water or with alcohol wash for 20 seconds of rubbing. - Dont panic - Have 14 days supply of food at your house in case you have to self isolate. - if you can, delay things such as parties, weddings, funerals, group activities (choir/church) for at least two weeks to see where we are up to, this will help halt the spread. Churches are starting to organise services online. - Be kind. Perhaps you could pick up a grocery box for a neighbour or write a letter to an old person stuck at home. Please note, every day things are changing. Dont be surprised if the government make a call to close schools and universities soon and potentially everyone able work from home.

17.01.2022 Lentil Quinoa Tacos, are a delicious way to check off a few servings on the Daily Dozen checklist- including beans! Todays recipe is from Erin and Dusty from ...Erin Stanczyk - Eat Move Rest. Enjoy! Ingredients: 1 cup dry quinoa 1 cup dry lentils 1/2 red onion, diced 2-3 garlic cloves, minced 3-4 tablespoon nutritional yeast 1 tablespoon oregano 1 tablespoon cumin 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder black pepper, to taste Method: 1. Rinse and drain quinoa and lentils and cook each separately with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to medium/low until water is absorbed and grains are cooked. 2. Meanwhile, saut onion and garlic with a bit of pepper in a splash of water in a pan until soft, fragrant and slightly translucent. 3. When green lentils are cooked, place in strainer and rinse under COLD water and then place in food processor and pulse to achieve more of a meaty texture. *The cold rinse will help ensure that the lentils do not become over-processed. 4. Combine pulsed lentils, quinoa, sauted onion and garlic, and seasoning mix, and stir until thoroughly combined. 5. Serve the dish up with optional fixings below. Makes enough for about 4-6 people. Optional Fixings: shredded romaine and/or romaine leaves, corn tortillas, bell peppers, red onion, sweet corn, cherry tomatoes, mango, cilantro, lime wedges, avocado slices or guacamole, black beans.

05.01.2022 Greater variety in fruit and vegetable intake is associated with lower inflammation even if you eat the same number of servings. Same with improving cognitive function, too. Greater variety in fruit and vegetable intake is also associated with a better mental status, executive function, attention, and memory function in some cases, even after adjustment for total quantity. So, if you have two people eating the same number of servings of healthy foods, the one eating a greater variety may do better. Michael Greger August 2020

04.01.2022 This is our WA COVID-19 update for Saturday 21 March 2020. Todays update includes information on new measures which have been announced or implemented today. O...ur regular public updates include up-to-date information, current advice and tips on how to better protect yourself. It is important people are well informed on the virus, so as new information or advice becomes available we will share it. ---- - Current cases - With around 600 additional tests completed since yesterdays update, there have been 26 additional cases of COVID-19 detected in Western Australia. 15 of these cases are linked to overseas travel - specifically the UK, USA, Ireland, Spain (via Dubai), New Zealand, and Europe. All new cases are located in metropolitan Perth. The remainder of todays new cases are being investigated to determine the source. All the WA cases to date, bar those still being investigated, have been confirmed to all involve overseas travel or linked to close contacts of those who are returned overseas travellers. Increasing cases indicate we are on the cusp of some community transmission. Weve now completed over 9,000 tests in Western Australia, with over 1,000 from regional Western Australia. The tests have uncovered 90 cases, the remaining tests all returning negative results. Of the confirmed cases, one patient has now fully recovered. ---- - Additional measures announced today - A range of additional planned health system preparatory measures have been announced today including restricted hospital visiting hours and scaled down elective surgery. - New hospital visiting hours - Restrictions on visitors at WA public hospitals will be tightened to better protect patients and staff. From Monday 23 March: - Children under 16 will not be able to visit patients - Visiting hours and visitor numbers will be reduced - Confirmed COVID-19 adult inpatients and COVID-19 inpatients under investigation will not be allowed visitors - Anyone exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, or in self-isolation, will not be able to visit patients - Elective surgery - Only urgent Category 1 elective surgery cases, which are treated as cases with the potential to become an emergency, will be continued in WA hospitals. From Monday, 23 March 2020 no further bookings for Category 2 and 3 elective surgery, procedures and routine community dental services will be made at WA hospitals. As of Tuesday, 24 March 2020 all category 3 elective surgery and procedures will be cancelled while booked Category 2 patients will be reviewed by hospitals and treating clinicians, and if deemed urgent can proceed. Reducing elective surgery will help preserve face masks and other vital personal protective equipment. This is essential to protect health staff from infection when testing or treating confirmed cases. ---- - Travel advice - Australias borders are closed to everyone except for Australian residents, citizens and their family members - effective 6pm WST Friday, 20 March 2020. Australians are now advised NOT to travel overseas. Level four advice is now in place for EVERY overseas country, this is the first time this has ever happened. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is also advising all Australians overseas who intend to come home to do so immediately. Western Australians should only travel interstate if it is absolutely essential. Restrictions have been placed on travel to WAs remote Aboriginal communities, who are especially vulnerable. Anyone arriving in Australia from overseas will to be forced to self-isolate for 14 days. International cruise ships will also be banned from docking in Australia for at least 30 days. Anyone entering or returning to Australia from overseas are required to self-isolate for 14 days after arrival. They are required to go straight to their home or accommodation and remain there for the full 14 day period, with the exception of seeking medical assistance if necessary. Western Australians who are aware of someone breaching a requirement to self-isolate - please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or WA Police on 131 444. ---- - Testing and COVID clinics - COVID-19 testing is part of a national regime with decisions regarding testing criteria being made at a national level. The criteria will continue to be reassessed as the situation evolves. This current testing criteria will ensure testing of high-risk patients can occur at the height of the expected pandemic. Effective immediately, COVID-19 testing in WA will only be available to individuals who: 1. Have fever (temperature of 37.5 deg or above) or respiratory illness AND 2. Can provide evidence of: Recent overseas travel (for example, airline ticket or passport stamp) OR Close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case OR Are a health or aged care worker, with direct patient contact. All COVID-19 testing in the metropolitan area will be performed only at the three COVID clinics, which are operational between the hours of 8am-8pm, 7 days a week. They are based at Royal Perth Hospital (Ground Floor, Ainslie House, 48 Murray Street), Fiona Stanley Hospital (Allied Health 2, Gymnasiums, East End, Bedbrook Row), and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (C Block, Hospital Avenue). New COVID clinics will be opening across the metropolitan area next week. More details on clinics in Midland, Armadale, Joondalup and Rockingham will be released shortly. Additionally, a COVID-19 clinic is operating in Bunbury and is open from 10am - 4pm every day. It is based at the Bunbury Health Campus (Corner Bussell Highway And Robertson Drive). In other regional areas, people should go to a public hospital, health service or remote health clinic. Please call ahead if you are concerned that you have contracted COVID-19. Patients at COVID-19 clinics are required to bring proof of recent travel or identify the confirmed case they have been in contact with. Patients will be screened and where appropriate tested, provided with appropriate information and referred for further medical treatment if necessary. If people do not meet the criteria they will not be tested. Those individuals who are tested and well enough, will be asked to self-isolate while they await test results. Anyone who is confirmed to have COVID-19, who does not require hospitalisation will be required to stay in self-isolation as instructed by the public health team. It is also extremely important that people who are unwell and are concerned they have COVID-19 should immediately self-isolate and then seek further medical advice. ---- - Vulnerable people in our community - The National Cabinet has agreed to a number of measures to protect and support elderly Australians. There will now be restrictions on visitors to residential aged care facilities. Anyone who has been overseas or in contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 within a fortnight will be banned from visiting aged care homes. Aged care residents will only be able to receive one visit a day, with a maximum of two people visiting. We ask all regular visitors and staff to be extremely vigilant and take every precaution. To address specific challenges facing people with disability in this COVID-19 environment, the nations Disability Ministers have decided on an action plan to ensure the best possible care is provided across the disability sector. Specific measures in this plan will be finalised and announced in coming days. ---- - Schools - The official medical advice is clear - closing schools is not currently recommended for Australia. There is no medical evidence that indicates closing schools helps to slow the spread of COVID-19. If schools close, many families would have to leave their children in the care of grandparents, who are most at risk. It would also have a massive effect on our front-line health workers, many of whom would have to stop working to care for their children. If there is a need to temporarily close a school down - we will do that. However, prematurely closing all schools could do much more harm than good. Thank you to all staff at our schools for their important service at this challenging time. ---- We are preparing and taking every precaution to protect Western Australia from COVID-19. The Western Australian health system and our hospitals are very well prepared to manage infectious disease situations and have well established systems and processes in place. The WA Governments Pandemic Plan has been updated to respond to COVID-19, and it is now publically available. You can see the plan for yourself at https://www.wa.gov.au/covid19 under WA Government Response. The State Government is taking this very seriously and we need to be prepared for a pandemic. Every action we take and decision we make is to protect Western Australians. We have already taken action with a suite of measures to prepare the State for the possibility of a pandemic. It is important that we remain calm and use common sense. The best thing we can do to protect ourselves is quality personal hygiene and exercise social distancing by avoiding unnecessary personal contact. That includes covering coughs and sneezes, washing hands often with soap or sanitiser, staying home from work or school if unwell, avoiding shaking hands or hugging, and maintaining distance from others in public. Please also continue to follow the advice of authorities and doctors - anyone who is instructed to self-isolate must take the order seriously, stay home and not put others at risk.
