20.01.2022 It seems only fitting that I am spending International Rural Women's Day in the archives of the Country Women's Association (CWA) of NSW, uncovering stories ab...out some of the organisation's inspiring pioneers. This woman with the deeply sad eyes is Florence Laver, who founded the very first branch of the CWA, at Crookwell in 1922. Originally from Victoria, she lived on a property not far from the town, with her husband and three sons. Florence was a pioneer in pursuing a greater say for women long before the CWA was formed. A few days ago I met her granddaughter and namesake, who showed me an ornate certificate bestowed on Florence by the Victorian Farmers Union (precursor to what eventually became the Country Party) for her "courage and initiative" in creating its first womens section in 1918. Florence was elected as a State vice president of the CWA at its first executive meeting, and devoted many hours to the organisation until her sudden death in 1935 at the age of 60. #CWA #ruralwomen Crookwell Community Hub See more

09.01.2022 Did you know Dorrigo has its own waratah? The Dorrigo Waratah most commonly occurs around Dorrigo, on the Dorrigo Plateau but is also found in the MacPherson Ra...nges on both sides of the Queensland-New South Wales border. It is a very attractive small tree with its dark green glossy leaves and red wheel-like flower heads. It can be difficult to establish but give it a sheltered position in a deep, well-drained loamy soil and you will be richly rewarded. It makes a wonderful feature tree. 02.01.2022 CWA member, Susan, has made this delicious banana cake with chocolate-coffee icing from the CWA Cook Book originally printed as the Coronation Cookery book in... 1937. The recipes have been updated to metric but still written in the old style. Why not give it a go yourself? **Banana cake recipe** Cream 2 tablespoons butter and 220g (1 cup) sugar in a bowl. Add 1 beaten egg and then add 3 whole mashed very ripe bananas, one at a time, beating well. Mix in 225g (1 cups) plain flour, 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda and 1 teaspoon baking powder. Add 2 tablespoons milk. Spoon into greased cake tin and bake in a 180oC oven for 35-45 minutes. Make an icing by melting 2 teaspoons butter and stirring in 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 1 tablespoon of strong coffee and teaspoon vanilla essence. Add enough icing sugar to make a smooth, even spread. Decorate with walnuts. Note: Always remember to preheat your oven and if using fan-forced, set at 160oC. For the coffee in the icing, Susan used used 1 teaspoon instant coffee in 2 tablespoons water. To purchase the CWA Cook Book go to: https://shop.cwaofnsw.org.au/index.php
