23.01.2022 Boxes ... and some images to stretch the imagination while I wonder what fascinating entries will be seen at the guild box making night this month? #bookbinding #boxmaking
23.01.2022 Life Membership Conferred It is with great pleasure that we announce the conferring of Life Membership to the Western Australian Craft Bookbinders Guild on David Millhouse. David has been a stalwart of the Guild for decades, and has occupied every position on the committee over a number of years. He was responsible for finding us our current home at McDougall House when we were required to leave our previous premises. David was also the course convenor, and indeed the sole de...liverer of a range of courses for many years. He was the face of the Guild at shows both in Perth and in the country regions, and represented the Guild at the Perth Royal Show committee. He always has nothing but good to say about members and their, at times, naive works, offering assistance and encouragement as required. David's health is keeping him from attending much these days, but we were delighted that he could attend for the presentation. I am sure you join us in wishing him well, and in giving him the thanks deserved after such a long period of service to the Guild.
22.01.2022 Our second box for closer examination from Mondays meeting has a wonderful and complex opening mechanism ... #wacraftbookbindersguild # #boxmaking #bookbinding #guildchallenge
22.01.2022 Trimming books doesnt need a lot of equipment. Here it is being done quickly and easily with a flat blade and a simple press. The results look excellent.
21.01.2022 The British Society of Bookbinders announced the death of bookbinding legend Bernard Middleton on 29.1.19 Their tribute is located on their website news page. #bookbinding #bernardmiddleton
20.01.2022 If you're in the vicinity of the WA Wood/Craft show this weekend (3rd to 5th August) look us up the Guild stall! Guild members will be manning the stall, there will be books and equipment on display, and possibly some demonstrations by members throughout the day in between our conversations! #bookbinding
20.01.2022 In about 7 weeks time, bookbinder Benjamin Elbel will unveil the technique behind his new Pianel binding at a workshop hosted by Lori Sauer. "Pianel has a reduced outlook with all the elements of the piano hinge tucked away in a neat, nifty construction, leaving only two clean vertical lines on the outside separating the spine and boards. Shiny dots of polished brass rods complete the head and tail. The process behind the result is simple but requires a lot of precision and planning." #bookbinding #benjaminelbel #bookbindingtechniques
19.01.2022 An enchanting volume caught my eye in the bookstore yesterday ... A casebound, square backed paper cover with gold leaf and gorgeous endpapers ... #bookbinding #unusualeditions
18.01.2022 Remember to visit the Guild stand at the WA Wood and Craft Show this weekend, 3-6 August.
16.01.2022 Boxes seem to be a theme tonight, with an interesting discussion on wetting out and drying old boxes under weights to straighten them out! Springboarding from that, the anatomy of a box ... courtesy of Richard Minsky and the Guild of Book Workers!
14.01.2022 I've been thinking about endbands recently, prompted perhaps by the Guilds' recent listing of courses for 2019 ... the scope for creativity and variety is amazing - from the well-known pre-made endbands, to handmade rolled endbands to hand sewn endbands ...here are some examples ... #bookbindersguild #bookbinding #endbands
14.01.2022 A book on boxmaking caught my eye at my local library last week ... Sosumi, a design office in Frankfurt, Germany, focus their book on using recycled board and kraft tape to create boxes. The lineup includes square boxes, round boxes and then moves to creating desktop items such as pen holders and magazine file boxes, to some simple box furnishings - shelves and laps ... The book carries instructions for basic processes including cutting, folding and gluing the gummed kraft tape, and includes the use of simple jigs to square boxes. An interesting Eco-friendly primer for a novel introduction to boxmaking! And ... the real fascination for me? The really interesting structure of the book! #wacraftbookbinders #boxmaking #bookstructures
13.01.2022 Here we are again at the WA Craft show for 2019. Lots of interest in book repairs, some in courses. Come and visit us this weekend.
13.01.2022 It is our pleasure to invite you to Join us in Como at 7pm this evening for a special start to the year as we honour a lifetime membership award! Celebration, a plate of eats and a current project to share will be greatly appreciated.
11.01.2022 The final week of the Beginners Bookbinding course started with measuring ... and ended with corner snipping and pasting as the book slipcases took shape. The evening ended with broad smiles (and some relief?) as books fitted into neat, well-made slipcases. Well done - please do come and report in to next Mondays guild meeting and share your successes with us! #bookbinding #beginnersbookbinding #slipcase #flatbackbook #hardcoverpamphlet #wacraftbookbindersguild #casebound
10.01.2022 On Monday guild members presented a fascinating range of boxes for the annual box making challenge. The breadth of work was wonderful, and boxes ranged from attractive eye catching work, to complex mechanical structures and beyond that to quirky and innovative paper structures! #wacraftbookbindersguild #boxmaking #guildchallenge

09.01.2022 With the current world events we have cancelled all our scheduled courses and our meetings. We will let you know once any kind of service, normal or otherwise, resumes. In the meantime we will attempt to stay in touch via Facebook and Instagram. Now is a good time to work on your books and techniques. Here are a few miniatures to inspire you.
08.01.2022 Boxes II was held in Roleystone this weekend, and it was a great learning place ... with lots of good cheer and humour as well. Oh, and we used a bit of card along the way ... #wacraftbookbindersguild #bookbindingcourses #boxmaking #doubleboxes
08.01.2022 More thoughts on endbands ... a simpler and perhaps interesting form of headband/endband is the handmade glued type. These endbands are usually rolled around a hemp or linen core and, simple as the technique sounds, imagination is the main boundary here! A sampling of images follows ... #wacraftbookbinders #bookbinding #endbands #headbands #gluedendbands
06.01.2022 A comment in January's meeting was mentally filed for further investigation ... "Tudor" bookbinding, named by Bookbinder Paul Delrue because the first book he bound using this approach was a Shakespeare, involves overlapping strips of leather creating subtle three dimensional and geometric elements. These images are a small sample of the intriguing books this technique creates ... (and Paul's Tudor binding of Pater Pan is delightful!)

04.01.2022 Happy 2019, and welcome to an exciting year which includes the Bind '19 bookbinding conference! 01.01.2022 The pop up box is an exotic structure which is a mix of a clamshell and slipcase boxes. It overcomes one of the problems all slipcases have you dont need to pull the book from the box by its spine ... #wacraftbookbindersguild #popupbookbox #bookbinding #boxmaking #hugopreller #guildchallenge
