21.01.2022 WADA wishes to apologise to the alumni of the WA Foundation for Deaf Children (WAFDC), who were LOCKED OUT of a meeting yesterday at WAFDC. The behaviour of WAFDC was, and is, appalling. Our concerns with this behaviour will be forwarded to relevant government and funding bodies. The WAFDC CEO Lynne Van Olden, who was not invited to the meeting, refused to answer questions from volunteers advocating on behalf of the Deaf community. The funding bodies of the WAFDC will b...e questioned on this lack of transparency and alerted to the bullying, intimidating behaviour of a government and community funded part time employee. Due to the actions of Lynne Van Olden and the WA Foundation for Deaf Children, West Australian Deaf Arts is now unable to attend the Denmark Festival of Voice and support this community and their school children learning Auslan. The discrimination toward our group which supports both children and families has shocked a community.
20.01.2022 This is what we will be doing on Saturday April 13th at 12:55pm... We are doing a 20-minute performance and then there will be 10 minute performance by someone else, which WE will then follow on from straight away with a another, but DIFFERENT 15-minute performance!

20.01.2022 WADA’s signing choir are so fortunate to have been invited to Denmark’s Festival of Voice for 2018! It is held the long weekend June 1st -4th and looks to be an exciting and heartwarming adventure as well as a wonderful new experience for many of our members. It gives Deaf a chance to have a voice and demonstrate Auslan, which has been taken up as a L.O.T.E at the Woodbury-Boston Primary School in Denmark. Sadly we may have missed the mark for funding for accomodation and t...ravel so we will be putting in a mammoth effort to fundraise. All donations from now are so welcome and extremely appreciated. If you would like to donate, you could deposit or transfer funds to our account: please make any cheques payable to West Australian Deaf Arts (Bendigo Bank) BSB: 633 108 ACC: 1495 47572
19.01.2022 Please see the below announcement from Deafness Council WA .. a great opportunity so don't miss out. Auslan Interpreter will be in attendance :)
19.01.2022 There is currently a Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. Members and clients of Better Hearing Australia WA have repeatedly expressed concern since 2009, around the behaviour of the 'Telethon' Speech & Hearing (TSH) Board, in relation to the members and assets of BHA WA. Ongoing concerns have been made that the current TSH Board have made no attempt at redress. West Australian Deaf Arts (WADA) members have expressed concerns re the WA Foundation for Deaf Children's (WAFDC) behaviour toward the alumni of WAFDC and WADA members. If you want assistance with a submission to this important Royal Commission then please pm this page and we will attempt to assist you.

07.01.2022 Anyone who would like to get together for a party for Rae, please let me know what evening(?) and time you are available. Rae is retiring from WADA. @Rae Gibson has tirelessly opened a hall every week for 7 years, started warm-up and rehearsal, and seen each practice day right through to after the last person has safely left each time to lock-up after us all. She has put her heart, soul and creative talents into all of us. She has given us so much: including her mime, dance... and teaching skills (not to mention her amazing array of costumes and makeup!)... And, most of all, she has shared her energy, passion and pure love for Theatre and for the Deaf Community. She has fought to bring Deaf Theatre to Western Australia, to learn everything she can about the Theatre and to pass it on to all Deaf, whether children or adults, boys or girls, men or women, with or without a disability, focusing especially on teaching and including Deaf, Deaf-Blind, HOH - signing or orally-trained - or people with full hearing ability, it does not matter to Rae: if you have a love for (or even a passing interest in) the beautiful Australian Sign Language, that she has seen the birth of and its development into a Nationally recognised language over the last 78 years. Rae is a one-in-a-million person. We will never meet the likes of Rae Gibson again, no matter where we go or how far we look. She is an individual who pushed through incredible barriers, way before Deaf rights were even whispered about. Rae fought fiercely for her friends, her family, her peers, her teachers, mentors - anyone who asked her to support them in any theatrical or Auslan-related endeavour could count on her help, her friendship, advice, teaching, mentoring - or just to stand by their side, right to the very end. She goes to everyone’s funeral she knows to pay her respects and cries for us all. She cheers for us all. She is amazed at all she sees: from a butterfly’s first emergence from the cocoon, to the first flutter of wings, to its first full flight, to its last effort to get off the ground. This is what Rae does for all of us - such is her love for us. Well, @Rae, we all feel that love in return for YOU. I am sure I am not the only person to feel this, I know that I will just utter the word and this will send the wind rustling in the trees, the ball will roll and as the word spreads and the ball collects momentum, you will find an awful lot of people have been touched by your love and would be more than happy to pay THEIR respects to your dedication to Theatre - and the Deaf Community (in which you are still quite active, of course! However it IS the end of an era...)

03.01.2022 THE BIG SING (ADULTS) CONCERT, IN DENMARK LAST WEEKEND... WHAT AN ATMOSPHERE! THERE WERE MORE SINGERS ON STAGE & ON THE FLOOR THAN SPECTATORS! HERE WAS THE PLUG: Note that Dr Barnwell only came to Denmark this year because WE (WADA) did!!! Come take part in a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be in the presence, and sing with living legend Dr Ysaye Maria Barnwell (USA), who will be leading two three hour workshops as The Denmark Festival of Voice Big Sing 2019. image1.jpeg... Best known for her work with gospel greats Sweet Honey in the Rock, with whom she sung and toured for 34 years, Ysaye she has delivered her workshops across the globe for the past 28 years. Her message is clear and passionate, Our voices activate every cell in our bodies and so running those vibrations through our bodies changes us usually for the better. She goes on to say There is an awesome power in the human voice, and when uncommon voices are blended for a shared goal we become a community of individuals absorbed in a shared communal experience. Dr Barnwell will also deliver a guest session on ‘Spirituals’, sharing how these have informed her singing and life, and offering examples from her long composing history. She has received numerous (many) awards and commissions (when people ask her to make new music) ranging from symphonic & choral works for a Requiem to the bones of slaves through to numerous choral, film, video, dance and theatrical projects from Sesame Street to The Steel Festival. Dr Barnwell also trained as a Sing Language Interpreter, which led her to facilitate Sweet Honey in the Rock’s tradition of including a Sign Language Interpreter in the ensemble. Knowing we had the WA Deaf Arts Choir coming to DFoV this year was the deciding factor for Ysaye to make the long journey from her home in East Coast USA. with Genelle Moore and 6 others at Lake Monger.
