24.01.2022 This is a fairly long read but I recommend stop scrolling and take a few minutes to have a read. Over the years I have seen thermal imaging grow in use in WA (by therapists), and I have always disagreed with it. I never believed the training nor the equipment/cameras to be adequate and this post confirms those beliefs. I will undergo radiography as part of my university degree, and even with that I would still not attempt to provide thermal imaging! ... Im not posting this to create negativity, but I believe we should be raising awareness on such matters so that owners can make informed decisions when it comes to the care and services provided for their horses.

24.01.2022 Ive seen this picture do the rounds about a million times now, probably because its very relevant information which needs to keep in peoples minds. But Ive never seen it with such a powerful way to think about it like this post has done! Have a read, I think this will help it make a lot more sense for a lot more people!

23.01.2022 Ok so our next carrot stretch is for Poll Mobility This technique works to; - stretch the Head Oblique muscles - improve mobility through the Poll... - restore lateral flexion mobility restrictions For the anatomy enthusiasts, I call this Poll mobility for simplicity but in reality this technique is targeting the atlantoaxial joint. This is the joint of C1/C2, and is the joint which allows for the highest percentage of the no nodding action or as we call it for riding purposes; flexion (I still like to call it lateral flexion in order to distinguish it from what we refer to in riding as on the bit, which anatomically speaking is actually flexion) Karma does hold her head quite high which I allow as for her this is where I currently get the best quality movement without her doing her friesian neck and twisting through the Poll as an avoidance technique. Try it with your horse, and feel free to share any comments or questions you have. #equinemusculoskeletaltherapy #equinemobilitystretches

23.01.2022 Did you see our Poll Mobility video last week? Well here is a good example of a horse displaying muscle tension through the Head Obliques; a perfect example of when the Poll Mobility carrot stretch would be beneficial. 23.01.2022 Answer revealed; Anatomical name: Coxofemoral. (Acetabulofemoral in humans) Structural classification: Ball and Socket... Functional classification: Multiaxial The controversial question; can the hip be out??? Being a ball and socket it is highly controversial to use terminology such as out. In my opinion using such terminology refers to the joint being out of alignment, which in the case of the hip would mean a dislocation. If your horse has a dislocated hip then unfortunately there is nothing your equine therapist can do to help. They can certainly not pop it back in which is something I hear thrown around far too commonly! There can be dysfunction or pathologies with the hip joint but given its depth within the body you would never be able to palpate this! Seeing the skeleton, and seeing the large amount of femur (Greater Trochanter) which sits lateral to the joint itself you can start to appreciate that the joint itself cannot be palpable. Then add in the large muscle bulk covering the hip and ask yourself, how is it that non-doctor/vets are able to say that the hip is out??? Hopefully this food for thought for some! #horseownereducation #horseanatomy #equineanatomy #equinebiomechanics

22.01.2022 A message received this week from a client, updating me on how her horse went following his bodywork appointment. It really is such an amazing experience hearing the feedback, seeing it in their movement and expression, and feeling it through their bodies, to realise just how beneficial bodywork can be! #equinesportstherapy #equinesportsmassage #equinesportsscience #equinebiomechanics #horsetherapy

22.01.2022 PEMF plus Cyclonic massage will be up and running this week!!! PEMF is the exciting part of this announcement, but the addition of the Cyclonic massage is also very exciting. I will be releasing an article in the coming weeks to discuss the benefits of PEMF therapy but as a very quick summary it can be used to help with chronic muscle issues, recovery following strenuous work, promote healing of non-union fractures just to name a few.... This is now going to be included as standard for appointments moving forward. PEMF has very few contraindications, but where this applicable I will have programs set to just run the Cyclonic massage so that all horses can still get a benefit from this new therapy tool addition. As I increase my knowledge, an additional hand held unit along with Wave Light Pulse is also going to be implemented for cases which will suit this additional therapy style. Very exciting times ahead!

21.01.2022 From 17h plus, to Galloway, to Pony... Any size, any shape, any discipline, All horses can benefit from equine sports therapy. #equinesportstherapy... #bodyworkforhorses See more

21.01.2022 Doing some prep relaxing work in order to perform some mobility work on this girls Poll area. Working with a head shy horse can be challenging when their issues present through the Poll/Head oblique muscles but working with the horse, and keeping them relaxed and comfortable is always the first step. If you break their trust then the job gets a whole lot harder. #equinemusculoskeletaltherapy... #horsetherapy See more

Stay tuned next week for the video to launch!... #horsehealth #horseownereducation

16.01.2022 Monday Motivation

15.01.2022 Have you ever given much thought to the fact that horses were NOT designed to carry weight?? They make it seem so easy though, so it can sometimes be easy for us to forget this. On the other hand, horses ARE designed to hide pain. It is their instinctive nature to hide their pain as best as possible, for as long as possible.... Two facts we know are true about horses, which combined can make it a very tricky balancing act for owners to know what is right for their horse. Im in no means saying we shouldnt enjoy our time in the saddle. But I do ask, when was the last time you had your horse checked over by a qualified professional? #horsehealth #equinesportstherapy

15.01.2022 Trying to hug me... Or trying to bite me... Well in previous times when she had a sore back, it was always mostly trying to bite me! So Im very pleased to say that this time around, it was mostly hugs and nuzzles!!!... #equinesportstherapy #equinerehabilitation

15.01.2022 I work hard to gain as much knowledge as I can, but I also work hard to build a business which puts this knowledge into a practical sense which benefits horse and rider, so receiving remarks like this really does put a huge smile on my face!

13.01.2022 As an Equine bodyworker and as a Riding coach with a focus on biomechanics, I couldnt agree more with this post! This is why I tell my clients they need the saddle fitted to both the horse and to them, and also why I recommend Performance Saddle Fits. Balance, or lack there of I should say, is so detrimental to your horses development and needs to be addressed. After all, riding is meant to be fun not an ongoing struggle!

13.01.2022 Ok Monday... Lets do this!!! #equestrianmotivation

12.01.2022 Monday Motivation... Breathe in Confidence, Breathe out doubt!

12.01.2022 Despite the price, I do like feeding Lucerne hay and this interesting read confirmed all my beliefs for feeding it. As the article states, I feed 1-2 biscuits a day with meadow hay being the bulk of the hay. The Lucerne for me, is fed am and pm as part of my feeding routine (meadow hay is available 24/7). I use it for the protein as I dont feed much hard feed, and also to help with calcium due to the grass types on my property. I also feed a small amount before work and as... part of our loading and unloading routine on the float. Who else feeds Lucerne hay???

12.01.2022 Was forced into a day off today, given that I can barely talk! Seems that I have just overdone it this week and thankfully not actually sick as a lazy morning seems to have done the trick! One thing I did manage to do before crawling back onto the couch was film the next stretch for our series. This is a little capture of setting her up for the stretch, but I dont want to give any more than that away until the video is released next week. Remember, you can join our email c...ommunity to get the first glimpse of any videos released; www.waequine.com.au/contact #equinesportstherapy #equinebodywork

11.01.2022 Before and After video of Lumbar tension in one of todays clients! Horse presented with tension through Lumbar, through the deeper layers of muscles. The initial part of the video shows the sticking point where I can no longer glide my pressure through the muscle.... as though my hand has hit a wall of tension.... What the video doesnt clearly show unfortunately is that at each time at this point the horse would hike his hip towards me due a pain response. The second part of the video shows the muscle now much softer with my hand able to glide through as I apply pressure. There is still a milder pain response present, but this result did require deep tissue work so I would expect the area to be quite sensitive following this. You may even be able to see the visible change in the muscle tone from the before video to the after video. He may be feeling a little tender tomorrow, but I love knowing that my work here has made a big impact! #equinebodywork #equinesportsmassage

11.01.2022 Ok, another big news announcement for the week; I bought myself a new baby!!! This is something I have been wanting to do for a long time, and I figured that by buying a youngster now then he will be ready for starting when I graduate my degree! ... So technically speaking, he is a graduation present! Cortez is a Friesian x Warmblood who should mature to 16.2h. Hes already a lot bigger than in this photo, but I didnt get any photos when I went to view him... but you can be sure that Ill post updates each time I visit him! I feel like its been a month of big news! #newhorse #futuredressagestar #friesianwarmblood #bignews #babyhorse

10.01.2022 Join in the fun... Who knows about muscles and the terminology of the attachment points??? If you studied a few years back, you may not yet know the new terminology.... Bonus points if you can tell me why the old terminology of Origin and Insertion has been outdated #anatomyquiz #horseowneranatomy

10.01.2022 They always (well, mostly) love the shoulder work!!! #equinesportsmassage #equinesportstherapy

10.01.2022 This weeks video of recommend stretches is a simple Tail Wiggle. This a technique that I came up with when mucking around with ideas to soften and restore mobility through the back. Im not sure if I had seen something similar along the way over the years, or whether it was just a completely random idea, but regardless, it works really well. The axial skeletal has more muscles supporting it that what most people would realize; from the very deep single-segmental and multi-se...gmental intrinsic muscles, then working out to the deep, intermediate and superficial layers. I hope this gives you an idea that there is more going on in the back and neck than what meets the eye, so you can understant that its vitally important to look after these areas! This tail wiggle technique is simple yet highly effective. It can be done without warm up, and in fact can even be used as a pre-warm up technique before rides to help set your horse up for a successful ride. I think it is all quite well explained and easy to follow in this short video, but of course if you have any questions just ask and Ill be happy to help. #horseownereducation #horsepilates

09.01.2022 Tension in your horses body will often lead to impaired performance under saddle. It will restrict freedom of movement, causing a lack of mobility or altered movement patterns, and therefore limit your horses potential. Feedback like this below is a pretty common occurrence once we get them started with bodywork. #equinesportstherapy... #equineperformanceservices See more

08.01.2022 This smile says it all! And trust me, this photo makes me smile just like this too! Im feeling pretty proud and so thrilled to see this duo happy in the saddle, with Romeo obviously feeling more comfortable within himself and now able to work in this frame which we have been aiming for as part of his rehabilitation.... No training aids or gadgets required. Just bodywork to get him feeling more comfortable and able to work over the back more correctly, and a biomechanics coaching session to help bring this movement out in him. Its photos like this that remind me why all the hard work is worth the effort! (photo not from biomechanics session, but from first trot back under saddle as part of his rehab progression following a second injury) #equinebiomechanics #equinerehabilitation

07.01.2022 Hi all, Important information post, please read; Firstly, a massive thank you to everyone for supporting me and the work that I do. The link is below. Secondly, appointments are currently booking up around 2-4 weeks ahead of time so when ever possible please remember to book ahead of time. Please bear in mind that I am at a full time study load with university so it is essential that I protect my study hours so I can maintain my Distinction grades. After all, my university journey is for the benefit of the horses I work with. For anyone reading this who isnt aware, I am currently at university becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic to gain entry into the Post Graduate Diploma in Animal Biomechanical Medicine. Even with studying full time, this is still a nine year journey! For the time being, new clients are still welcome bearing in mind though that it may take up to 3-4 weeks at times to get an appointment. I have an exciting new addition of PEMF, Pulsed Electro Magnetic Therapy, to add to my therapy services in September!!! Ill be writing up some educational articles about PEMF closer to the date. With this will come a small price rise in my fees (please note that this is only my second price rise in over 6 years so it was due to happen anyway) This may also see the release of some package deals targeted towards performance and/or rehabilitation outcomes. So busy busy busy, but its all very exciting times ahead! Please like or comment to show me that you have read this. Thanks, Bec x www.waequine.com.au/contact

04.01.2022 I love seeing all the different personalities and the different ways horses express themselves... And when they are tall as Imani, you get to see it from a different angle which makes it even more amusing lol! Very happy to see this boy doing well and moving forward after a very long journey for his owner!... #equinesportsmassage #horsetherapy

03.01.2022 Please welcome Zoe to the WA Equine team!!! Its no secret how full on my weeks can get with juggling work and uni, with clients often waiting up to four weeks to get an appointment. So it was time to step up and bring an assistant to the team. Zoe will be working alongside me on my busy days to help create the bodywork notes and assist with the general day to day tasks. This will help my days to run smoother and hopefully mean that very soon Ill be able to open up a few m...ore time slots each week to help ease waiting times. As you can see, Karma approves!!! #horsebusiness #equinesportstherapist #movingforward #newteammember #horseprofessional

03.01.2022 How much do you know about the Hip joint? Comment below with your answer. Dont know but want to know? ... Well then comment below to ensure you are notified when the answer is revealed. Controversial question; If you know the structural classification, then can it be possible that the horse is out in the hip? Keep that conversation civil and evidence based please Answer will be revealed tomorrow, with photos of a real horse skeleton (Saturday) #horseownereducation #anatomy
