25.01.2022 Great article which we encourage all new pup owners to read. Socialisation is so important for young pups - and can still be managed successfully during the pandemic.

25.01.2022 Maxs first walk after graduating puppy school last week. Walking very nicely!

24.01.2022 There’s one simple change you can make straight away to improve walks with your reactive dog. But I’m giving you 7, just to be sure! https://www.brilliantfamilydog.com//its-not-the-dog-its-yo

24.01.2022 *** PARVO ALERT *** We have had a local case of Canine Parvovirus - the first we have seen at Concord Veterinary Hospital since 2013. This case was seen around ...the Canada Bay area last week. Parvovirus is incredibly deadly and has an approximately 50% mortality rate even with veterinary treatment. Parvovirus causes horrendous bloody diarrhoea and severe white and red blood cell changes. Parvovirus is a vaccine preventable disease - so if your dog is overdue their vaccinations please consider getting them up to date especially if you live in the Concord / North Strathfield / Five Dock / Canada Bay area. Stay safe <3

19.01.2022 Congratulations to online puppy school graduate Gus and his family - well done everyone!

17.01.2022 Heeling for the duration of a walk is an inappropriate and unrealistic expectation, unfortunately pushed by traditional punishment/alpha-based trainers (and by ...one certain tv trainer ). Dogs can sniff the entire walk while maintaining a loose leash AND be connected and responsive to you. Win-win. See more

17.01.2022 A really nice article - well worth reading.

16.01.2022 Leptospirosis update 06/08/2020 Sadly, there has been another confirmed case of Leptospirosis this week in a dog living in Newtown. The dog was not vaccinated ...against Leptospirosis and sadly had to be euthanised due to severe kidney failure. We are currently still investigating which strain (serovar) has been the cause. This is the first case of Leptospirosis this year and the first case reported in Newtown. Last year we saw 8 cases from May to November and these were from Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Glebe and Redfern. Importantly, we have not seen any infected dogs which have been vaccinated against Leptospirosis. Therefore, please vaccinate your dog against Leptospirosis if you live within a 3km radius of Surry Hills, in Newtown or its immediately surrounding suburbs or if your dog is in contact with rats. A vaccine has to be given twice 2-4 weeks apart and yearly thereafter to ensure protection. What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a potentially fatal bacterial infection that can cause acute kidney failure and liver disease in dogs. Dogs become infected by contact with urine from rats or indirectly via contaminated water or soil. They can also become infected by hunting and eating rats. Prevention of leptospirosis is achieved by limiting contact to sources of infection and vaccination. Until recently clinical leptospirosis has only rarely been reported in Sydney. Therefore, historically, dogs have not been routinely vaccinated against this disease. Clinical signs can initially be very vague such as lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. Importantly, leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease which means that humans can get infected as well, for example through contact with rat urine or urine of infected dogs, through skin wounds or through the mucus membranes (eg in the mouth).

04.01.2022 *** Kennel Cough Alert *** We have been seeing a lot of "Kennel Cough" in the area lately around Concord, Concord West, Mortlake and Breakfast Point - especial...ly in off leash dog parks. Kennel Cough is not exclusively from kennels, and is more properly named "canine infectious laryngotracheitis". It is caused by both a virus and a bacteria and is similar to whooping cough in people (although it is in no way contagious to people!). The best prevention is to make sure your dog is vaccinated against kennel cough annually. The vaccine is 60 - 80% effective - however if your dog is vaccinated and they contract the disease, they will have a much milder form of the disease. As with any respiratory illness, it affects the old and the young much more seriously. If your dogs vaccinations are not up to date, or you are not sure, please to not hesitate to give us a call on 9743 1715. Stay safe

01.01.2022 Congratulations to our puppy school graduates at Concord Vets last night. Well done Tommy, Jeri, Miracle & Chelsea (not in the photo). Keep up the good work.
