22.01.2022 Welcoming back volunteers at Wagga Wagga Meals on Wheels Wagga Wagga Meals on Wheels is very happy to welcome volunteers back on duty after many months of disruption. They are not only delivering delicious and nutritious meals, but also visiting clients with a happy smile and a quick chat. "We were very fortunate in Wagga that there were less health impacts of COVID-91 than in the major cities," Wagga Wagga Meals on Wheels manager Julie Logan said. "This was helped by people ...being very conscious of safe distance and the cough protocol. Remember we are not out of the woods yet. It is still very important that everyone continues to wash or sanitise hands for 20 seconds and cough and sneeze into their elbow. This will not only help prevent the spread of COVID-19, but other viruses as well. Flu season is coming, and these simple steps will prevent many people falling ill." Meals on Wheels provides a vital service by delivering to about 300 people in the region, ensuring they have healthy meals as often as needed. On Tuesday Wagga Wagga Meals on Wheels management is holding a Volunteer Appreciation Lunch to celebrate the contribution of volunteers to the community. "This is our opportunity to thank returning volunteers for their continuing contribution, to welcome new volunteers and to acknowledge the work of volunteers who are leaving the service," Julie said. "We would like to thank them for all the great work they have done over many years and recognise that the long-term viability of our organisation is reliant on the goodwill and work of our volunteers." Each year Wagga Wagga Meals on Wheels volunteers contribute the equivalent of approximately $50,000 in time and expertise to ensure the community receives a high-quality, relevant service. Not only do they physically deliver the meals, but they also check in with the client. "They are another person for the client to interact with," Julie said. "Volunteers keep an eye on whether the person is eating their meals, if the client has had a fall or not feeling well. There may be a need for further assistance such as more frequent deliveries or heating the meals for them. We can also request a review by the Aged Care Assessment Team for further services. When necessary, we contact the family to advise them of our concerns." See more
