11.01.2022 INVASIVE SPECIES COUNCIL CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION AGAINST PEST SPECIES The Invasive Species Council says urgent action against feral animals and weeds is the... only way to protect Australian wildlife from the impacts of catastrophic bushfires. Spokesman Andrew Cox says native wildlife in fire hit areas are very vulnerable to predators. He says restoring damaged and lost habitat is critical but will be painfully slow and in many cases impossible without action against pest species. "We should be rolling out an expanded fox and feral cat program," he says. "We should be focusing on those hard hooved feral animals - horses, deer goats and pigs, whether it's ground shooting, aerial shooting and trapping. "And we also should make sure weeds are dealt with, that will be how we avert a native wildlife crisis." The state government has been air-dropping food to rock wallabies in burnt out areas near Sydney. But Mr Cox says efforts to save wildlife will fail unless tackling ferals is a major part of the disaster recovery. "We probably need to be accelerating and putting in a big effort to trap things like foxes and cats, because for the brush tailed rock wallaby that is their major predator, the foxes," he says. "So if their food source is put out, then we've got to make sure that predators aren't taking advantage of that."
