25.01.2022 Youth Work in a regional area is really tough right now, as Im sure it is everywhere else too. So my self-care and energising activity today has been going back to look at Peter Slatterys 30 activities in 30 days content. Its a real refresher on the nuts and bolts of what we do and creative ways of freshening it up for us. Love your work Pete. We should bottle you mate.... www.peterslattery.com

25.01.2022 THERAPY DOGS come in all shapes and sizes. What colour is yours?

24.01.2022 A German Shepherd, Doberman Pinscher, and a Kelpie have died. All three are faced with God who wants to know what they believe in. The German Shepherd says, I believe in discipline, training and loyalty to my master. Good, says God then you shall sit by my right side. Doberman, what do you believe in? Asked God. Doberman answered, I believe in the love, care and protection of my master.... Aha. God said, you may sit by my left side. He looks at the Kelpie and asks, what do you believe? The Kelpie answers, I believe you are sitting in my seat. See more

21.01.2022 And now we have socks! All profits from socks will go towards treats for the hard working team. In just 1 week of work, the WAGS team of dogs goes through up to 8 packets of the training treats we use. Treats are an integral part of the young people learning to train the dogs. Can you spare some change to help make change for our young people?... 20.01.2022 We need to talk about accessibility for young people. And we need you! All young people in NSW need access to youth services, but there hasnt been much informa...tion and support about how to make sure that young people with disability have equal access. We invite you to meet the service providers who stepped up to the challenge to work with Youth Action and People with Disability and put their service to the test. They share their learnings, and top tips for accessibility in NSW. You can too. To access the disability inclusion tool kit and to learn more about the project www.creatingaccess.org.au

20.01.2022 If ever I wished I lived in Sydney it would be for this! Our school system, in regional areas at any rate, is beyond broken.

19.01.2022 So here is a first for me... Dotty has long been the star of the show for WAGS. She was my first alpha and my most highly trained dog. A few months ago, Dotty ...became an inside dog and as with most things with Dotty in her twilight years, the transition was relatively easy. She is a well behaved dog with well established manners. It became necessary very recently to get her desexed to manage some health problems, so that was done on Friday last week. The kidlet and I bought her a cheap squeaky toy from Kmart on about the same day. The thought process (if there was one) was that a toy would be funny since she had never had one. I dont know if it was the desexing (which occurred on a day she just happened to be starting her heat cycle) or some other blip on her hormonal radar but that squeaky toy became her baby. It took me a few days of hell to figure out what was happening. Her behaviour changed overnight into a neurotic weirdo. She started whining, messing up my bed, refusing to sleep on her blanket and obsessively wanting access to the bedroom. Finally I caught up and worked out that the bloody squeaky toy was in my room and she was nesting! So today I gave in and gave her a whelping box. She has immediately gotten her toy and nestled into the box. She is currently licking said toy, presumably to stimulate it into drinking some milk...

19.01.2022 W.A.G.S. is a phenomenally successful, award winning early intervention program for young people who are living with mental health issues. We are very proud of the work we do and the dogs who make up our team. We breed our own dogs for the program from our own fully qualified, vet screened and certified dogs. WAGS is very proud of the dogs we breed and love to see them go on to be assistance dogs, volunteer therapy dogs or stellar pets.... Are you looking for your next family member? WAGS has dogs available now for excellent homes only. These dogs are calm by nature, confident and have been extensively socialised. They have all been used in our programs with school children and with special needs children. Send a message or call to talk to us about whether we have a dog to suit your needs. ** Please note, we DO NOT sell puppies under the age of 6 months. All dogs are temperament tested and therefore not sold prior to passing our testing procedures. All dogs are sold desexed, microchipped, fully vaccinated and wormed and with a welcome home policy if things dont work out. Good care and quality training costs in time and resources. Dogs vary in price from $1000 - $2500.

18.01.2022 Anyone thinking of applying who hasnt taken the leap yet? Do it!!

17.01.2022 THE DAY I MET MY DOG... Are you looking for the last piece of the puzzle to fill your home? Are you on the hunt for a new best friend? Do you love super sweet b...order collies with ears that are a little out of control?? Sweet Katie is looking for her people. Katie has been an important member of the WAGS crew for several years now. But Katie would be much happier having some people to call her own and who are we to stand in the way of her dreams? Katie is 3 years old, spayed and micro-chipped. She is in rude good health and in love with life. For the 2 years that Katie has worked in the WAGS team she has visited kids at schools, been a counselling dog and traveled many hundreds of miles to do it. Katie LOVES playing fetch and will happily amuse herself with a soccer ball if you get tired of kicking it for her (and I promise you will!). Despite having a lot of energy, Katie is not a jumpy, destructive or hyper kind of dog. She is very calm on the lead and is one of our most chilled team members when at work with the kids. Katie will lay about for ear massages or scratches all afternoon long. Katie has excellent basic obedience skills (sit, down, wait, come) and is a keen student. Katie does get flustered easily if you get cranky with her and she will emotionally shut down and be unable to learn if you are rough or yell. She wont run away but like any kid with anxiety she cant concentrate when stressed. Katie has lived with us here as part of a large pack for most of her life. She has also spent time being a member of a smaller household of 2 other dogs and cats, with no problem. Katie does not cope with living as part of our large pack particularly well. She loves having lots of play mates ( the dog park is the "Best.Day.Ever." everytime!) but she lacks the necessary social skills to steer clear of the dogs further up the pack hierarchy who dont particularly like her. She has always been the victim rather than the perpetrator of trouble. Despite this, Katie is not particularly submissive or nervous around other dogs (- perhaps if she were she would run into less trouble?). Katie loves making new friends and generally has no issues. Katie would make the ideal companion for a little person as she is gentle and sweet. She would enjoy being part of a family although she has not yet experienced the joys of being an "inside dog". Katie would also excel with someone who is looking for a dog they can take to work or use in a therapeutic environment. Katie is certified as a therapy dog and an Intervention Dog (Group Work Specialist) with WAGS. Katie has a particular love for teenagers who want to tell her all their troubles... Katie is NOT suitable as a stock dog. She lacks both the desire and the ability. Although raised on a farm, Katie may also not be suitable unsupervised around stock although I dont ever test that theory with my dogs. If you think Katie might be your next bestie, get in contact with Penny on 0481 533 394 to discuss. Katie will only go to what we consider to be a suitable and well matched home. Katie is for sale for $1500. In these difficult economic times, all our business income is going towards maintaining our canine therapy team until they can get back out there working - so please dont ask us for a discount. We can however help you arrange transport if you dont live near Armidale.

13.01.2022 We are super excited that restrictions are easing which will allow us to start up our training courses once again! The need for mental health support in your community right now is at an all time high. The last 6 months in Australia have been rough on a lot of people. And we need to mobilise as many people with good dogs as we can to assist over-subscribed services to support them. Can you help out? WAGS currently offers 2 courses to the public:... The THERAPY DOG ASSESSMENT AND BASIC HANDLER TRAINING course is for people who have dog they think would make an awesome therapy dog for work in schools, libraries, aged care homes, hospitals and the like. This course will get you and your dog certified as a team. The CANINE INTERVENTIONS HANDLERS course is for people who are interested in using dogs in their therapeutic role at work. Could be a teacher, a therapist, a youth worker, an OT or anyone else who believes that a dog could add value to their role. Both courses are up on eventbrite now. You can also go to www.wagsthedog.org for more information about us. Hope to meet some of you there!

13.01.2022 This is why I do what I do with dogs. This dog is not one of mine but is a superstar. Just like I try to raise my pups to be. A dog can change a persons world.
