22.01.2022 Water intake The amount of water we need per day will vary among individuals, due to body size, activity level and geographical location. Water is essential for maintaining hydration and is required during digestion, absorption of nutrients and to remove waste products. Additionally, it reduces the risk of urinary tract infections, kidney stones and dehydration. Water is also lost during breathing, sweating and going to the bathroom, making it even more important that ...we replace these losses. Water is the ideal drink and replacement for soft drinks, although fluid intake can also come from different foods i.e. fruit, vegetables, soups. So do you think youre getting enough water per day? How can this be improved? The dietitian at WA Health Group can assist you in ensuring you can meet your needs. 20.01.2022 With sport restarting next week our team have been getting lots of question from clients about INJURY PREVENTION. Here are some tips to minimise injury risk when running: 1. Do more than run.... Incorporating strength and mobility training into your routine will ensure your joints remain stable and capable of absorbing impact. Strength training will iron-out any weaknesses or imbalances in your body, and improve your running mechanics. 2. RECOVER EFFECTIVELY. Stretching, foam rolling, compression, heat, ice, massage. There are tons of different ways that you can recover from your training. An Exercise Physiologist will be able to give you the tools to recover effectively. 3. WARM UP REALLY WELL. Running when it is still a bit cold can make symptoms temporarily worse. If you are competing in an event, allow yourself 15-20 minutes longer than normal to go through a comprehensive warm up especially if the event is early in the morning. 4. GET SOME COACHING. Running is a skill, and your gait pattern can effect more than just how fast you run it can change the impact of running, make it more efficient (so you use less energy) and even reduce pain. There are loads of recourses available on the net, but consider getting some expert advise. 5. KEEP A TRAINING DIARY. Some days will be good, others not-so-much. Keeping a training diary will keep you motivated, keep you accountable, and allow you to see the progress you have made. #exercisephysiology #choosephysio #wholeofyou #wahealthgroup

09.01.2022 Do I need to take dietary supplements? Supplements should not be used to replace a healthy and well balanced diet. In fact, supplements are complimentary to ensure we meet optimal nutrition. Supplements are often required when an individual experiences nutrient deficiencies or other circumstances including:... - Iron or B12 deficiency - For athletes, needing sports supplements - Planning for pregnancy - Probiotics to assist with IBS treatment or following a course of antibiotics. - To help manage osteoporosis (weak and brittle bones) and osteopenia (bone loss) The key message is that we can get all the nutrients our bodies needs from a varied diet. Additionally, fat burning or metabolism supplements are strongly discouraged, often associated with dangerous side effects. However, if you feel unsure whether you are meeting your dietary needs or are unsure which supplements to safely take, speak to a Dietitian who can provide you with individual advice at WA Health Group on 6162 2616 or interested in seeing how else a dietitian can help? - click here - https://www.wahealthgroup.com.au/dietetics
