14.01.2022 Emerald bees on orchid. Euglossa bazinga is one of the 250 orchid bee species found in Brazil. The "orchid bees" (the euglossini tribe within the bee family Api...dae) are found in forests from Mexico to southeastern Brazil. They are easily distinguished from other bees by their extremely long thin tongues, which can equal twice the length of the body, and their shiny metallic coloration. Video by Eduardo Budes See more

12.01.2022 Just the two of us... We all know giraffes are big... but how big? Well, on average, their heart alone weighs over 11kg! This huge heart is needed to pum...p blood all around the body. Their lungs are capable of holding 55 litres of air. To put that into perspective, human lungs can hold around 6 litres. #EarthCapture by Darshan Hs

09.01.2022 The Azure Kingfisher is one of the smallest and most striking Australian birds. They pair monogamously before defending their breeding territory. They are never... far from water where they catch their prey! They'll also often kill their prey by repeatedly striking it against the perch before swallowing it head first...these birds are as hardcore as they are gorgeous. Image: Ann Killeen

05.01.2022 Today has been extra ordinary! Started with another amazing University of Minnesota Raptor Center webinar, then was able to catch up with my friends there after...woods. The amazing Fireman Sam and his lovely wife Jenny Conway finished off a meticulously constructed new aviary, I was given the wonderful surprise below, and Ross the wonder builder did amazing stuff on the new project, and all that was just starters!! The star of the day though goes to the legend Opie the Powerful owl. Today he took a 160g rat from in leafy foliage and took it up to the highest perch. You will see what followed but another tick for Opie and his progress. Thanks to the new aviary being completed a little Australian Boobook has moved into his new space and Opie now has access to 18 m of flying space with varying levels of perching access. He now makes another milestone successfully. Next step will be the small 30 m round free flight. I am sitting here watching him on the CCTV waiting for him to go through into his expanded area. So far he has looked like he was doing the big run twice but each time ha circles and comes back, which is also exciting. Here he is about half an hour ago looking so good as he consumes his dinner nicely up on the highest perch for the first time.

01.01.2022 A study has produced a unique conservation tool to protect livestock, lions and livelihoods. Would you believe it involves painting eyes on the rumps of cattle?... Taronga and UNSW researchers have been working with farmers in the Okavango Delta region in Botswana, painting eyes on the backsides of cattle in 14 herds that had previously suffered lion attacks. Normally cattle herds graze unattended for most of the day, when the vast majority of lion attacks occur. Researchers painted one-third of each herd with eyes on rumps, one third with cross marks and one third unmarked. No painted eye-cows were killed by predators during the entire four-year study, while 15 unpainted and 4 cross-painted cattle were killed. Practical guides demonstrating the eye-cow technique have now been produced in both English and Setswana to assist farmers to implement this unique technique. It is hoped that this simple, low-cost, non-lethal approach will allow farmers to coexist with lions and other predators. This is good news for lions in the wild as populations continue to decline, with human-animal conflict a significant contributor. So it looks like the eyes have it this World Lion Day! The eye-cow project is a collaboration between Taronga Conservation Society Australia, UNSW Science and Botswana Predator Conservation. Bobby-Jo Photography
