25.01.2022 Many parents dont understand the importance of tummy time and can often feel discouraged when trying tummy time, as baby may be unsettled, but it is definitely... worth persevering with. Tummy time ideally should be incorporated into your babys daily routine and should be done when baby is awake and not tired and is under adult supervision. Tummy time is important for safety reasons, as it allows baby to build up the muscles in their core, neck, back, shoulders and arms, so that if baby happens to end up on their tummy, they have enough strength to lift their head off the mattress or push themselves up off the mattress using their arms. Tummy time can be started from birth, with the amount of time spent on the tummy and the frequency of tummy time increasing with age. A common mistake that many new parents make is trying to do the wrong type of tummy time for babys developmental age. Very young babies prefer a different type of tummy time to older babies. Tummy time for a very young baby may include carrying baby resting on your shoulder or resting baby over your lap or on your chest. As baby grows with confidence and strength, you can try placing baby on their tummy on a firm flat surface. Tummy time can be incorporated into the daily routine in many ways including baby massage or bathing. 19.01.2022 52 Sensory Activities to Do in 15 Minutes or Less! The ideal "Brain Break" for kids is sensory -- moving the body, immersing the senses, getting outside -- al...l of these things help to get kids out of their head and re-centered in their environment. Sensory and movement activities also help activate the Parasympathetic Nervous system (rest and digest), the counterbalance to the Sympathetic Nervous System (Freeze, Fight, or Flee). Get your kids off screens and using their senses for their brain breaks! Taken from the Yoga and Mindfulness Toolkit for Kids https://nurtureandthriveshop.com//yoga-and-mindfulness-too

17.01.2022 Parents, ever wondered why some days your child is happy to have you peel their banana for them, but on another day, it makes them fly off the handle?! Similarl...y, teachers, have you ever thought that your students behaviour is completely unpredictable? It could be the multiplier effect, coined by Dr Stuart Shanker. Its what adults might refer to as the last straw or the straw that broke the camels back, ie, the seemingly minor event that causes an unpredictably large or sudden reaction, because of the cumulative effect of small events. The difference is, as an adult, you can probably identify all of these small events, even if only in hindsight, whereas for a child, theyre usually hidden. And the effects of more stressors dont simply add up, they multiply. Dr Stuart Shanker refers to these hidden stressors belonging to five domains - biological (eg hunger, tiredness), emotional (eg loneliness, nightmares), cognitive (eg making decisions, learning new things), social (eg a different teacher, conflict with peers), or prosocial (eg taking turns). The difference in a childs reaction to a particular situation could be how many of these stressors are present. The more that are present, the less it takes for a child to react, or the bigger their reaction might be to a seemingly trivial situation. Kids wont know themselves that these stressors are at play, let alone be able to tell us. Its our job as adults to do the detective work, particularly for younger children, and figure this out. And if we cant, we keep in mind that theres no such thing as a bad kid, only a stressed one, and we empathise, set boundaries with kindness, and co-regulate. The next time you see problem behaviour from a child, think of it as stress behaviour, play detective, and explore whats lying beneath the surface. Common stressors to consider: Lack of sleep Hunger Understimulation/Overstimulation Sick/getting sick/recently sick Uncomfortable Time pressure Change of routine Challenging task Conflict with friends Missing time with loved ones Fear of punishment Feeling misunderstood See more

06.01.2022 Breastfeeding has been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS and is included in the 6 steps for safe sleeping. In 2017 a study suggested that breastfeeding for two m...onths or more almost halves the risk of SIDS. For mothers who cant or dont wish to breastfeed, the risk of a sudden unexpected death in infancy can be reduced by following the other 5 steps for safe sleeping which include: Sleep baby on the back from birth not on the tummy or side Sleep baby with head and face uncovered Keep baby smoke free before and after birth Provide baby with a safe sleeping environment night & day Sleep baby in their own safe sleeping place in the same room as an adult care-giver for the first 6 to 12 months Click the link below to read more on the breastfeeding study: https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content//5/e20171324
