19.01.2022 Walk the Little Island track between March and November to view the spectacular aerial courtship displays of the Providence Petrel. One of the world’s ra...rest birds, the Providence Petrel returns to the island to nest in the southern mountains and can be ‘called’ out of the air, landing at your feet perfectly unfazed. Hike Mt Gower to hear a cacophony high overhead - the cries of 30,000 seabirds, many of them circling the mountain like a coronet. Fun fact, the name "providence" was given by 18th-century colonists on Norfolk Island because the birds' arrival saved them from starvation after their supply ship was wrecked - they harvested the birds and their eggs by the thousands. : @henry_brydon See more

18.01.2022 I woke up late the day after returning from Albury, and checked the weather. The storms coming from the north were coming fast. I had a decision to make; depart... right away, or be stuck here for nearly a week. Not long later, we were in the car on the way to the airport. I filed an IFR flight plan, and took off, first stop Taree. This was chosen because it was pretty close to my first island destination, and also had self-serve fuel payable by credit card, fairly rare in Australia and NZ. The weather en route was not great, and on arriving at Taree it had deteriorated to ~600ft ceilings and a 20+kt crosswind. My landing was not impressive, but at least I was down. I hung out with a couple of pilots in the flying club until the rain eased enough to refuel, donned my drysuit, and took off once again. I flew a little up the coast before turning out to sea, and the first long ocean crossing in a while. There was about a 20kt headwind, right on the nose, that would have me arriving about an hour before sunset. I used the InReach to get updated weather as I went; it was windy, rainy, and cloudy at my destination, but all just about within sensible limits. I touched down in howling wind and driving rain, having snuck in right at minimums off the GPS approach. The airport was deserted and I kept my drysuit on as I secured the airport, otherwise I'd have been instantly soaked through. There was no phone signal so I used the InReach to communicate with my aunt who was trying to find me somewhere to stay. Somehow, the available room we'd confirmed before departure had been given away to walk-in traffic, on a tiny island 400+ miles from anywhere! As always, the full write-up is on the website at https://katamarino.co.uk//round-the-world-new-zealand-day/

10.01.2022 Throw back to the days of flying into Lord Howe Island by Flying boat. The majestic Sandringhams 'Pacific Chieftain', 'Islander' and 'Beachcomber', eac...h able to carry 42 passengers, took off from Rose Bay in Sydney Harbour to touch down in Lord Howe's beautiful lagoon some three hours later. Flights were timed to arrive at the Island one hour before high tide to ensure take-off on the full tide; this meant that departure from Rose Bay often occurred in the early hours of the morning, seeming to add to the romance and drama of the trip. During this time, the lagoon and jetty (where passengers alighted after being ferried by launch from the flying boats) were virtually the social centre of the Island. Islanders and visitors alike gathered to meet incoming passengers, collect parcels, or farewell departing guests with frangipani and hibiscus leis. Lei’s were thrown into the water from departing launches, inevitably washing ashore to signify their wearer’s return. : Lord Howe Island Museum See more
10.01.2022 After a great night's sleep at Waimarie, Peter and Sharon offered to take me out for a tour around the island. This was a treat that I couldn't say no to, and I... had the time for it given that I was now a day ahead of schedule. I first went with Peter to refuel the aircraft, wanting to catch the fueler before he left; the commercial flight for that morning had been cancelled by the bad weather on the mainland. We set off in their car for a tour, covering pretty much the entire road network! Stunning beaches, beautiful mountains, and a fascinating dose of history both from the museum and from their stories about the island's past. Particularly interesting was the tale of Sir Francis Chichester's crossing of the Tasman, with a long stop at Lord Howe enforced by a storm wrecking his aircraft in the bay. After touring around, Sharon and Peter dropped me back at the aircraft and we said our goodbyes. After departure, I first headed south to see Ball's Pyramid, the largest free-standing ocean pyramid in the world. I returned to Lord Howe, and set course for Norfolk Island, several hours to the east. Once again the HF radio didn't work, so I used airliners for position relays, and after a few hours cruising through pleasant conditions Norfolk Island came into sight. Once again I'd had a headwind to contend with, but running the engine at high power for the break-in made up for it a little. After landing, I waited until given the all clear by bio-security, and opened up the doors. The customs and immigration man was friendly and helpful, and even ended up giving me a ride to the hotel. That's good service! The full write-up and more photos are at https://katamarino.co.uk//round-the-world-new-zealand-day/
