25.01.2022 Many people, in WA, privately employ their own support workers. Some of these workers fall outside the WA State Industrial Relations system. This is because they are providing a domestic service in a private home. The WA government is proposing that the WA Industrial Relations law that allows this, be changed to remove this as an option. If you would like more information about the proposed changes and why, please click here https://www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au//New-...laws-to-bolster WAiS has been working with Minister Bill Johnston’s office exploring the impact of these changes on people and families employing their own workers and, in particular, on co-residency arrangements. The Minister’s office understands our concerns and is open to continuing these discussions. WAiS deeply understands the impact, especially to individualised living (co-residency) and will be keeping a keen watching brief over the progress of the Bill through Parliament and will update you as it progresses. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact us. If you would like to read the Bill and it’s Explanatory Memorandum please click here https://www.parliament.wa.gov.au//bills/BillProgressPopup

24.01.2022 The Lives We Lead - Workforce has input from people with lived experience from around the state, including Sandy Dann one of our reference group members. Read h...er words describing her background and why she’s joined us. I have been a part of Indigenous Media as a Broadcaster Journalist for the last 28 years. Media is an occupation where you do not know what will happen from day to day and I have trained, worked with and met many interesting people. My favourite part of the job is meeting all the everyday people that contribute so much and pass on community information. When I first started out, Indigenous Media was just beginning around the country with BRACKS remote broadcasting in the bush and some town radio stations growing legs as well. Back then equipment was heavy to carry, there was a lot of time editing and putting programmes together and even CDs with aboriginal music were hard to get. Now, most of the information is digital and programs are put together on the computer. The rush one gets from meeting people along with feeling creative, with touching and smelling creativity in what you are doing, is largely gone because of social media. I do four days of the week on The National Indigenous Radio Service, live around the nation, and we also have a National Indigenous Television Service out there too. I accepted the invite to be a part of the Lives We Lead reference group because media has given me the tools to continue challenging myself and it encourages others to do the same. If you think you have a story to tell or know someone in the regions who does please get in touch with Geraldine Mellet, the Project Coordinator: [email protected] Image Description: Photo of Sandy Dann in the radio studio, with a microphone up to her face and headphones on. An orange border, with The Lives We Lead web address in the right corner. Across the image the words 'Consistent, Committed, Courageous' are written.

14.01.2022 WAiS, together with organisations such as People with Disabilities WA, have been working with the WA Department of Communities, Housing, over a number of years, seeking a workable and positive Rent Setting Policy for Co-residents who are supporting people with disability living in a social housing rental property. In March, a media release by Ministers Dawson and Tinley announced a policy change that was due to take effect July 2020. https://www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au//Af...fordable-rent-cap Under the new policy, for rent calculation purposes, where a co-resident has an assessable income that is more than the full rate of the Carer Payment (including the Pension Supplement and the Energy Supplement), they will instead be treated as if their income is only the full rate of the Carer Payment (including supplements). This policy reduces the amount of rent that then needs to be paid for the property as social housing rent is the lesser of: a) 25 percent of weekly assessable household income (with the co-resident carer being treated as earning the full rate of the Carer Payment if their actual income exceeds this amount) ; or b) the market rent of the property. Unfortunately, due to COVID this policy did not take effect in July as anticipated. We have now been advised that Ministers Dawson and Tinley have signed off for this policy change to go live from 7 December 2020. More information is to be released shortly on the Housing Authority website.

05.01.2022 On December 1st 2020, the registration and regulation of NDIS service providers in WA will formally transition from the Department of Communities to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission in the final stage of the national rollout. Disability sector organisations will need to align their organisational culture, policies and practices to meet the mandatory quality and safety compliance requirements under the NDIS Commission Quality & Safety Framework. At no cost to eligibl...e organisations, WAiS is available to provide innovative and tailored support to assist WA regional and remote disability service providers who are currently registered to deliver NDIS funded supports, to meet the NDIS Commission requirements and Practice Standards. 04.01.2022 Meet Dan Russell, a proud Goldfields resident, whose insights from his own lived experience will be an asset in showcasing employment and disability in the WA r...egions through The Lives We Lead- Worklife. Dan is well known around his hometown of Kalgoorlie where he works for a wholesale food distributor. It’s an active job in the warehouse which he enjoys, along with the sense that he is doing something for the community. In addition, he believes he has brought an awareness of disability and ability to his colleagues, through his own focus and persistence in getting the job done. About joining the Lives We Lead Reference Group he says I thought it would be a good idea to go out of my comfort zone and do something I haven’t done before. It will bring neurodiversity to the group and show it’s not difficult to communicate with someone on the spectrum. Dan is a very involved family member who plays a crucial role particularly with his younger sister who also has autism. Image description: A photo of young man, Dan Russell standing London, in front of a sign that says 'Portobello Road'. There is an orange frame around the image and the lives we lead worklife logo on the top left corner. Across the image words are written, it says, 'International Traveller, Aspie Role Model, Communicator, History Buff, Car Driver'.

04.01.2022 As some of you may remember, WAiS has been working in partnership with UWA, as part of a research project developing ‘Comic Contracts’. This project is being overseen by UWA Professor Camilla Baasch Andersen. The idea of Comic Contracts is to use images, or even comic strips, in legal contracts to make them easier to understand and more inviting to people to read. These Comic Contracts have attracted interest all over the world, in the business and corporate sectors. Needle...ss to say, this is actually a very challenging idea to many lawyers! The research project has been sponsored by a variety of organisations, including an international engineering company. WAiS wanted to explore with UWA, how this business and corporate comic contract approach could work in the disability and human services sector. 03.01.2022 Our Lives We Lead reference group know a lot about employment and disability personally and professionally. Meet Jos Franciscus, Community Awareness Strategist..., and hear why the focus on work is so important to her: I’m excited to be invited back this year to be a reference group member of this very exciting project and to witness it evolving. This year’s focus of employment and regional is very important to me on a personal level as someone who spent high school in Port Hedland, and before that regional Queensland. I’ve been a strong advocate of employment for people with disability who for many years have been overlooked for work roles. I believe community perspectives need to change with a better understanding of the considerable skills and knowledge people with disability can contribute to a workplace. Jos is Community Awareness Strategist at National Disability Services ACROD Parking Campaign ‘This Bay is Someone’s Day’ and Changing Places ‘Have You Got Your Key campaign. If you think you have a story to tell or know someone in the regions who does please get in touch with Geraldine Mellet, the Project Coordinator: [email protected] [Image Description: Image of Jos looking off to the left smiling. 03.01.2022 Urgent feedback sought on accessible housing (closes on Wednesday 26th August): https://melbourneuni.au1.qualtrics.com//form/SV_ai6nqENSX9 The federal governm...ent is currently looking at the standards that exist for new houses that are being built, and this includes the accessibility standards. These new standards will be legislated, which means that all new construction must meet these standards. Currently the standards around accessibility are voluntary, so this is an important opportunity to increase the number of accessible homes being built in Australia. The Australian Network for Universal Housing Design is working with the Melbourne Disability Institute (The University of Melbourne) to survey individuals with disability about their experiences of housing and the impact of accessibility (or lack thereof) on their quality of life, well-being, independence, mental health and autonomy. The results of this survey will contribute to the federal government review in to housing standards. This is an important opportunity to influence government policy that really makes a difference to the quality of life of people with disability, so we encourage you to complete the survey and ask that you share it within your networks. If you want to give feedback directly to government you can do that via: https://consultation.abcb.gov.au//consult-ris-accessible-/
