20.01.2022 Can walking in nature improve your mood? Dr Gregory Bratman and colleagues from Stanford University have been studying the psychological effects of urban living.... Recently they measured the positive effect on subjects mood after walking through lush greenery versus the negative effect on mood of those who walked near heavy traffic and looked at how this effect came about. Healthy adult city dwellers were assigned a 90-minute walk either alongside a busy highway, or through a quiet leafy setting. Researchers guessed that there would be higher versus lower levels of blood flow in the brains subgenual prefrontal cortex (SPC) depending on the assigned activity. This cortical area is associated with rumination (brooding), a known risk factor for depression. Subjects were assessed before and after their assigned activity to determine their level of morbid rumination and the amount of blood flow to their SPC. The volunteers who took the highway walk did not return soothed; blood flow to their SPC was high, and their rumination scores unchanged. Volunteers who had walked in nature showed measurable improvement in mental health and lowered levels of blood flow to the SPC.
