21.01.2022 Not daunted by a little light drizzle :D (before & during photos)
21.01.2022 Put this Saturday 5th September on your calendar!! All welcome as many hands make light work. Starting 10.00am at the community garden and stay as long (or short) as you like. Gardening gloves would be useful & if you have any favourite hand tools, bring those too. Benefits include fresh air, sunshine, social inclusion and some goodies from the garden.
21.01.2022 Has anyone got a chook feeder that they no longer need? We are almost ready to house our chooks and are needing a feeder and are hoping that we can attain one via donation. Thanks.
20.01.2022 The garden is looking great at this time
19.01.2022 Now you know where to find us@
19.01.2022 The Community Garden is now preparing the plots for winter vegetables but you can grow some yourself at home. If you've been luck enough to get hold of seeds, or can in the next few weeks, veggies to grow now from seed are carrots, beetroot, radishes, peas, rocket, and herb coriander. Make a teepee of sticks for the sugar, snap and regular peas to grow on if you don't have a trellis. Add compost or Dynamic Lifter to soil before planting and water in with Seasol. Then water with Powerfeed fortnightly.
18.01.2022 A little belated, but here are some photos from the Worm Farm workshop held in the Balaklava Community Library. Thank you to those who attended and of course to Kevyna Gardner who ran the workshop. It was great to see parents and children enjoying making their worm farms and being able to take them home. If you missed out this time and there is enough interest, we will hold another workshop at a later date. Please let us know if you are interested.
17.01.2022 ~ WORKING BEE ~ ALL WELCOME!! ~ Our first working bee is coming up this Saturday, 5th September 2020 from 10.00am and will be held on the first Saturday of every month thereafter, to keep the garden in tip-top shape. Bring along your smile, gardening gloves and whatever favourite gardening tools you like to use. It is a great way to enjoy the fresh air, sunshine, meet new people and even go home with some goodies from the garden We especially want the Wakefield Com...munity Garden to look good for our upcoming Open Day on Saturday 10th October 11.00am - 2.00pm, where we will be having guest speakers and refreshments available. We hope you will join us! See more
17.01.2022 More photos from the Worm Farm Workshop See the Balaklava Community Library page for even more photos :) https://www.facebook.com/198229076889926/posts/3479533942092740/
16.01.2022 HELP! Donations needed. We need donations of 3m posts for a trellis to grow zucchini vines to shade the eating area. We would love some community members to pay for chooks at $20.00 each. We also need old iron bed frames, wire mesh strips to surround the chook run, plus an old fashioned chillbox to house available produce. Contact 0439631761 if you can help.
14.01.2022 Urgent call out does anyone have any silver beet seeds or plants that we could have please 0427901043 *UPDATE* Enough seeds have been sourced now, thank you
14.01.2022 See you on Saturday at the Open Day!
14.01.2022 Today the community garden hosted a visit from two R-1 classes with Miss Monck from Balaklava Primary School. Being Book Week, many were in costumes. The children were delightful and very interested in the garden, particularly with trying broad beans and visiting our chooks.
13.01.2022 For plot holders over summer, seeds need frequent hand watering depending on weather. Established plants in wicking beds need watering by filling up wicking beds weekly. If you need assistance with watering, please ask for help either by writing on Noticeboard at Garden Shed or post a request on FB. Still available: two individual plots in raised corrugated iron wicking beds.
13.01.2022 There is a vacant plot at the Community Garden. If anyone is interested in using this bed, (no cost involved) please contact Kevyna on 0438-621-761 (UPDATE: The plot with the name Chris and Karen on it has now been taken). There are other plots as well. Silverbeet is growing nicely if anyone would like a few leaves and the tromboncino squash is going crazy, so there are a few to pick there as well. (Cross between trombone and zucchini - great for roasting!)
13.01.2022 The Wakefield Community Garden is flourishing! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Una Pike and Terry Hanrahan have worked extremely hard to create an immaculate garden over Autumn. The chook shed is now completed, which will have 6 chooks in, in July.... The compost and mulch are beautifully organised Two new wicking beds have been transferred from the Men’s shed. The community beds are bursting with produce, thanks to the skills of Una and Terry. ~~~~~~~~~~~ ** WANTED ** ~~~~~~~~~~~ We would like to recruit a band of Friends of the Garden green elves to help in the garden in exchange for free eggs, fruits, herbs and vegetables. They will be inducted and organised by Terry Hanrahan, so if you would like to be involved please contact Terry on 0428829145 as soon as possible. You can contribute as much or as little time as you like. We will have a Swap Cart set up in due course, and folk can contribute donations in money or in kind (eg produce, seeds, etc). In addition, we have garden beds for individual, private use, now available. These are free, so if you are interested, please contact Terry on the above number. We will shortly announce workshops at the Community Garden on planting seeds and seedlings and on creating worm farms. We look forward to seeing more community members become a part of this great initiative!

12.01.2022 Yesterday the Plains Producer took some photos for an article in next week's paper. Be sure to look for it. We will have a table at the pageant on Friday 18th December where we will be selling/swapping produce from the garden. Bring along your change (& if you have any fruit/veg from your own garden to swap) as this will also be the last opportunity to buy tickets in our "Paying it Back" raffle to raise funds for the garden. There are leeks in the garden that badly need thinning out and are going to seed. Please feel free to pick some. They can be sliced and put in the freezer for future use in soup, stews etc. If they have gone to seed, remove the hard centre stalk and cut up the rest (see picture).
12.01.2022 Wednesday 7th October - Worm Farm workshop hosted by Wakefield Community Garden - Balaklava. If sufficient interest, we will host another one at a later date
10.01.2022 A few things ready for the working bee Saturday 7th NOVEMBER 2020 (not October... oops), from 10am. At the garden there will be some seeds (pumpkin, loquat) and geranium cuttings as well as raffle books and possibly other produce etc. We have launched our "Giving it Back" raffle, where we give back to the local community while raising some funds. 1st prize is $400 worth of local gift vouchers and 2nd prize is $200 worth of local gift vouchers. Tickets are $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00. Why not support your community and buy some tickets either at the working bee, at various businesses around the town where raffle books have been distributed or ask any of our committee members.
09.01.2022 A great local example of what a community can do when they come together. Please support local community gardens and community gardens everywhere We welcome more interested persons to visit and share the local Wakefield Community Garden too.
08.01.2022 Are you artistic? Like painting? I am looking for assistance to paint our produce "Take & Donate" swap table. Ideally we'd like it to be colourful and if someone is artistic, that would be fabulous. Only the sides and legs to be painted at this stage. We are happy to share some produce from the garden.... It needs to be done this week, prior to our Open Day next Saturday 10th October. Please contact us either by replying here or via messenger. (One photo shows examples of paintwork on other similar carts) - accidentally deleted photos from first post while editing... oops!)
06.01.2022 Primary and BCCC students help to create the Community Garden.
06.01.2022 Hi all! We would love you to share this page around and invite others to like the page, so that more people in the region become aware of this wonderful project. If you would like to know more, would like to have one of the garden beds to grow your own plants, veggies etc or help out with watering and pick some of the produce from the community beds, please message the page or contact 0438 621 761. We would love to see more people involved!
03.01.2022 Reminder about the working bee at the garden this Saturday from 10am. All welcome. Why not pop in to say hello, see the garden, buy some raffle tickets etc. Pick produce from community beds for a donation. Let us know if you would like a dozen eggs for a $3 donation.
01.01.2022 "PAYING IT BACK" raffle - supporting the local community. 1st prize = $400 worth of local gift vouchers 2nd prize = $200 worth of local gift vouchers... Tickets $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00 To be drawn at the Plains Producer office on 21st December 2020 and results to be published that week. This is our annual fundraising raffle running currently, where we purchased gift vouchers from many businesses locally as our prizes. Many thanks to businesses who donated gift vouchers even though we were quite willing to pay for them to boost the local community economy. Please support us and in turn support the local community. There are raffle books distributed around the town, as well as with committee members, so you should be able to purchase tickets very easily. Look for the containers with raffle books and details list as pictured in some of the businesses listed and other locations. Thank you in anticipation!
01.01.2022 Garden plots now ready to be taken up by plot holders. Grab an Application form from the Community Library.
01.01.2022 Several of the garden beds have been "refreshed" with new compost and pea straw, ready for more planting. If you are interested in having a garden bed, or simply interested in planting &/or caring for one of the "community" beds, let us know. The tromboncino is still producing plenty and the silverbeet is doing well if members of the community would like some. We are always on the look out for community members to help with watering and care of garden beds.
