23.01.2022 World Sawfish Day! William Watson, Jeremiah Green, Linda Nardea and Damien Parriman flew to Perth to represent Nyikina Mangala Rangers & Walalakoo Aboriginal Corporation at WA Parliament house today. 22.01.2022 The Nyikina Mangala Rangers have been busy this week conducting cool season aerial & ground burning operations. The Grant Range was the focus for the aerial burning with the aim to protect the Black Footed Rock Wallaby habitat from late season hot fires that frequently occur in this area. A large fire scar was burnt around the base of the range using the DFES helicopter. A total of 750 incendiary caps were dropped to achieve this goal. As a result there now is a fire break ...around the range which will help stop those late season hot fires. The ground burning was in and around the Camballin Community to protect homes and critical Infrastructure such as communications towers and town water supply. Fire mitigation is very important work the Rangers carry out in the cool season. Cultural knowledge tells us that cool season fire reduces the risk of late season hot fires which do so much damage to country and community. The Nyikina Mangala Rangers would like to thank our partners #DFES & #WWF for helping make these burns possible. Nyikina Mangala Rangers Caring for Country.

20.01.2022 Kimberley Bio-security Zone Update Good morning Kimberley I can confirm there was a change late last night, there has been an approval for residents of the Kimb...erley to be able to enter the region so long as they are not showing symptoms of the COVID virus and they have an address where they can self-isolate for 14 days. This is a change from yesterday when they were required to self-isolate for 14 days prior to entering the Kimberley. Please note that the Kimberley is a very restricted area, all non-essential travellers will not be permitted in without self-isolating prior to entry. Now is not the time for tourists or holiday makers. This is a quick update to help our residents come back home if they are away. The photo below is the set up Police had at the Sandfire Roadhouse, we are dedicated to this serious task.

19.01.2022 Meet Shaquille, a Nyikina Mangala Ranger. WWF-Australia has been working with the Nyikina Mangala Rangers to protect the black flanked rock wallaby since 2012. Thank you to Lotterywest for your support on this work. #WorldRangerDay

19.01.2022 REMOTE WA LOCKDOWN FROM 9PM Access to the Kimberley and some East Pilbara remote communities will be restricted from 9pm tonight. "The Western Australian Go...vernment has partnered with the Commonwealth Government to implement new restrictions for access to designated regions in the State to protect the health and wellbeing of residents in the Kimberley and remote Aboriginal communities," the WA government statement says. From 9pm on Thursday March 26, 2020, access will be restricted into the following regions: - The entire Kimberley (the Shires of Broome, Derby-West Kimberley, Halls Creek and Wyndham East Kimberley) - Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku; - Parts of the Shire of East Pilbara that encompass the communities of Jigalong, Martu homeland communities and Kiwirrkurra. These designated areas account for approximately a third of the geographical area of the State; and almost 90% of WAs remote communities and the remote Aboriginal population. Under these arrangements, after 9pm tonight, any person who is outside a designated region can only enter that region if that person: - is providing essential services or supplies; or - has been quarantined from the general public for the previous 14 days. The Commonwealth Determination of designated regions under the Biosecurity Act 2015 (Cth) will provide broad, regional protection for the Kimberley," Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ben Wyatt said. While the legal measures adopted provide remote community residents with a level of flexibility to move within their designated region, I reinforce the messages that the safest place for residents is in their communities. Everyone should follow Health Department advice on hygiene and social distancing; and travel should be for critical purposes only. Along with these coordinated actions, I am also seeking Commonwealth Government funding to support quarantine arrangements, food security and medical services and supplies." Heres a map of the three regions affected. Important to note that the change doesnt affect movement WITHIN the regions, but restricts access to those wanting to enter.

19.01.2022 The number of new cases in Western Australia continues to be very encouraging, and shows that the measures we have taken so far are starting to have a positive ...impact. But we cannot afford to take our foot off the pedal. The health pandemic is here in Western Australia, and unfortunately it wont be leaving any time soon. But if we follow the advice, abide by the new rules and practice good social distancing, we can take a different direction to the rest of the country and the rest of the world. Western Australia is in a unique position - our isolation is now our best defence. And now, we must use it to our advantage. Thats why we have taken the unprecedented steps of introducing regional boundaries and brought in tough measures to restrict movement and social interaction. But as the situation continues to evolve around the world and across Australia, we need to take further steps to protect our State. We currently have restrictions in place for people coming into WA, and requiring 14 days of self-isolation - and those restrictions are working. But it makes sense that we go further now, and close Western Australias border. Based on the medical advice, we will move to introduce a hard border closure effective from midnight, or 11.59pm, on Sunday night. I want the message to be absolutely clear to any Western Australian over east who is thinking of coming back to WA. If you need to get home to WA come home immediately. If you are an eastern-stater, and thinking about visiting WA forget about it. While we are this State of Emergency, we need you to stay where you are. The quicker we can get through this, the sooner we can get back to normal. In effect, this decision will be turning Western Australia into its own island - our own country. These are drastic steps, but also sensible and workable - and they will give us the best chance of combating the virus and minimising the spread throughout our community. A number of specific exemptions will be implemented to ensure our State can continue to operate and function. The exemptions are currently being finalised, but they will include people who perform work functions including: - Health services - Emergency service workers - Transport, freight and logistics - Specialists skills, not available in WA, - National or State security and governance, and - Courts and judicial services; There will also be exemptions for FIFO workers and their families, however strict 14-day self-isolation measures will need to be followed, when they first enter the State. Further exemptions will also apply on specific compassionate grounds. We are living in extraordinary times. It is like something we have all never experienced before. But I am just so proud of the WA response. The wider WA community have responded to this with true Western Australian spirit. Everyone knows that we are in this together and for that, I know, we will get through this. If you had asked me a couple months ago that we would be closing the WA border, I would have laughed. But, unfortunately, this is no laughing matter. This is serious. We are serious.

19.01.2022 Good news for Nyikina Mangala Country and the Fitzroy River catchment. Ex-tropical cyclone Esther has dumped 100-300mm of rain across the entire Fitzroy River catchment and into the Great Sandy Desert. It hasnt been record breaking rain for the annual averages but certainly looking much better than last year. Through the Sawfish research of the past 17 years the Rangers know sawfish breed after high river level events so hopefully there has been enough rain and the Sawfish breed this year

18.01.2022 The Nyikina Mangala Rangers have again succeeded in catching a 4.1 meter saltwater crocodile over the weekend that's been hanging around Myroodah Crossing, an old swimming spot in the Walalakoo determination area. The Nyikina Mangala rangers Albert Watson, William Watson, Raymond Charles, Darren Green, Hottoe Skeen and Head Ranger, Jeremiah Green (Modra) had just moved the trap last week based on their extensive knowledge of the area and of seasonal croc movements. With t...he aid of the Parks and Wildlife services team, the Rangers got the affectionately named ‘Myroodah ‘ out this morning to move to the crocodile sanctuary in Broome. This croc had to be removed because it was humbugging Local Looma mob when they go fishing down the river said Head Ranger Modra. Photos supplied by Nyikina Mangala Rangers

16.01.2022 RANGERS CATCH BIG CROC The Nyikina Mangala rangers have succeeded in catching a four-metre crocodile thats been hanging around Snake Creek in the southern K...imberley in recent months. Head ranger Jeremiah Green says the crocodile has been seen regularly at the popular fishing spot near Camballin. "The croc has been humbugging people when they go out fishing, and stalking them," he told ABC Kimberley. "He comes up close sometimes, and even the tourists were getting bothered - one lost a dog a couple of years ago." The Parks and Wildlife Service helped the team install a trap in February, which the rangers then baited and monitored. This week the male reptile literally took the bait. Ranger coordinator Damian Giles said it turned into a good training exercise. "The Parks and Wildlife service came out this morning and assisted the rangers to pull the crocodile out," he said. "Hes gone off for retirement now, to the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park in Broome." "The people that use that river on a regular basis I think are glad to have him out of there, because there are children playing on the waters edge sometimes, which is not ideal but it does happen." The Nyikina Mangala rangers are now focused on trapping another worrisome crocodile hanging around at a Fitzroy River crossing nearby. 15.01.2022 Walalakoo Aboriginal Corporation (RNTBC) Directors and members Annie Milgin, Linda Nardea and Hilda Grey have collaborated with researchers Sarah Laborde and Sue Jackson of Griffith University, to publish a peer-reviewed article in a scientific journal. The article is available at the link below. It discusses Nyikina expertise on Nyikina Country, both in terms of ecological relationships and reciprocal relationships of care. The authors encourage sustainability scientists a...nd water planners to work collaboratively with Traditional Owners so that custodial relationships under Indigenous law are given equal consideration commensurate with authority/legitimacy attributed to hydro-ecological science and federal and state legislation. 14.01.2022 COMPANY ORDERED TO REHABILITATE YAKKA MUNGA The West Australian Government has ordered the Chinese owners of Yakka Munga cattle station, near Derby, to restore... the site to its natural state, after a land-clearing scandal. Zenith Australia Investment Holding was ordered to stop work at Yakka Munga, in June after Aboriginal native title holders, the Nyikina Mangala people, blockaded the station gates. Today, WAs Pastoral Lands Board has issued a default notice giving the company until the end of November to remediate the area. The company has been told the work is needed to mitigate the risk of soil erosion and to allow for regeneration of native vegetation. "The works include removal of livestock from the area to lessen soil disturbance, placement of roll-over banks to divert water run-off from cleared roads and the refilling of two excavated channels using the soil previously removed from those areas," the statement says. The company - a major landholder in Australia - is also being investigated under the Environmental Protection Act and could face a fine of up to $500,000 for clearing without a permit. The company has argued that it didnt need a permit because the work to build stock watering channels, roads and fences was essential to the operation of its pastoral lease.

There have been no new cases of coronavirus confirmed ...in the Kimberley over the past day, meaning that were still at three cases in total for the region. The Health Department is not releasing any specific information about the cases, but has confirmed urgent contact tracing is now taking place to determine their level of exposure within the community. Statewide there were 24 new cases, bringing Western Australias total to 255. There were five new cases in Regional WA; two in the Pilbara, two in the Southwest and one in the Goldfields. The safest thing you can do at the moment is "act as if you already have the disease" - self isolate were possible, take every precaution and follow the urgent advice at the bottom of this post. For updates over the weekend, check our pinned post here: https://bit.ly/2WNAB1I Travel bans to the Kimberley are now in effect, while travel between ALL REGIONS of WA will be banned from midnight on Tuesday. This means that travel to Perth, the Pilbara or any other region will be banned; exemptions will be granted for essential goods and services, employment purposes, health and some compassionate grounds. The State Government hasnt clarified exactly how the statewide ban will be policed, but were expecting it will be similar to the Kimberley, where police have maintained a heavy presence screening arrivals at the regions airports and borders since our local ban took effect. Six travellers were turned back to Perth today across Broome International Airport and East Kimberley Regional Airport. "If youre up here on holidays, if youre visiting - you need to leave now," Kimberley Police Superintendent Greg Crofts says. "You have until Tuesday to get home." You can read more here: https://ab.co/33QK09W Details of the Kimberley travel restrictions can be found here: https://bit.ly/2UlmYoz The Duncan and Tanami Roads have been closed in a bid to help enforce the travel ban. From midnight on Saturday, any Australian returning from overseas will now serve out their 14-days isolation under Government supervision. In WA, this will take place on Rottnest Island or in Perth Hotels set aside for the purpose. STORY: https://ab.co/2QLR1nu A summary of the ABCs key stories from around the country can be found here: https://ab.co/2IUIv0W URGENT ADVICE You must take the following actions now to reduce the risk of coronavirus infection to yourself and the community: If you have returned from overseas or interstate, you must self-isolate for 14 days. If you dont have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow. If you are unwell: Self-isolate at home. Do not go to public places. 03.01.2022 IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR OUR MEMBERS From 1.30pm on Tuesday, 24 March, Western Australia will implement strict border controls for all access points - by road, rail and sea. Exemptions will apply to essential services and essential workers, including health and emergency services, defence and policing, mining industry workforces, flight crews and freight of essential goods, via ports and trucks - with strict guidelines in place to monitor and manage this. These new border co...ntrols are all about reducing the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in WA. This is serious business. Aboriginal and Torres strait islanders are all at high risk of catching Corona, especially old people and people who already have other sickness or trouble with breathing. You can only leave your community for serious family business, school, work, to get food or medicine or in an emergency. If you have to leave your community for this kind important business that is OK but not too much because you can get very sick if you catch the sickness or you could bring that sickness back to your family. Government mob can come into your community, but only police, teachers, education, medical services and things like community emergency maintenance (powerlines/house/roads), or the trucks bringing in food. NO one can just come in for catch-up or other business. Stay home in your community, stay safe from Corona. This is a rule to keep that corona virus away, and keep you safe. This also means everyone needs to stay in WA. And nobody can come to WA.
