25.01.2022 We were delighted to have passengers back today after seven months. Thanks to Visit Baw Baw for supporting us. On Saturday/Sunday only the 11am & 1pm trains will run, after that - back to the full timetable.

22.01.2022 We’re running Saturday and Sunday - 11am and 1pm from Walhalla then back to the normal three trips from Wednesday onwards. Online bookings strongly recommended as there is an absolute 50 passenger limit on each train.

20.01.2022 Whilst we were very excited to get our train services back (and thank every one who has supported us over the past few weeks), we have been busy on another interesting little project out of Walhalla. Our good friends at the Gippsland Vehicle Collection at Maffra are based in a former dairy industry shed, which once had a siding leading into it. They have located some ex railways wagons for display and needed some broad gauge track built, which were very pleased to construct for them. The Gippsland Vehicle Collection has very interesting displays which are regularly updated - well worth a visit on your next trip to the area! https://www.gippslandvehiclecollection.org.au/ Photos: Darren Hodges, Stratford

19.01.2022 We are very pleased to announce that today the sound of our venerable Fowler loco echoed through the Stringers Creek gorge on a special train which was trialling a new (COVID-safe) onboard dining experience. Apart from a couple of works trains, the line has been silent since late March and the very few WGR volunteers on board were treated to a beautiful lunch on the carriage stabled on top of the Thomson River bridge with the loco shut down. This was a one off test trip but when we do recommence operations, WGR will be introducing a range of new experiences for everyone to enjoy.

17.01.2022 October 2020 is a very special month for the Railway as it marks the 26th anniversary of the Thomson River bridge restoration. This much photographed structure was built in 1909 as part of the final works on the line into Walhalla. It is distinguished by the use of bridge girders recycled from other parts of Victoria, notably the centre lattice span which was formerly part of a road bridge over the Murray River at Tocumwal. The bridge only saw 34 years of use until the Plati...na-Walhalla section of line closed and narrowly survived an attempt to blow it up as an Army exercise in 1958! It was then transferred to the former Narracan Shire and remained derelict until the fledgling WGR undertook a complete reconstruction in 1993/94, with very strong support from a number of Latrobe Valley businesses and the former SECV. It is heritage listed by the Australian and Victorian Governments and has seen many thousands of passengers pass over it since 1994. At the moment, it's having a Covid-forced rest apart from our hard working volunteer works crews passing over it in trolleys. We look forward to everyone riding over it in the not too distant future.

14.01.2022 We are really happy to advise that after seven long months, WGR train services will RETURN on Wednesday 4 November. The first three days of running (Wed 4th, Sat 7th and Sun 8th) will only have the 11am and 1pm trips running - after that it's back to normal services. Please note that all trips will be originating and terminating at Walhalla - no one way trips for the bushwalkers just yet! Due to stringent COVID compliance requirements, the trains will be restricted to an absolute limit of 50 passengers. To avoid disappointment, we strongly recommend you prebook online and arrive at Walhalla at least 20 minutes before scheduled train departure. For any queries, please call Walhalla Station 51656280 (BH). #visitgippsland

14.01.2022 Today, the Railway had a very respectful ceremony to mark Remembrance Day, complete with bagpipes and the last post played on a bugle. The Walhalla Railway Station was the final departure point from their home town for a large number of young Walhalla men, quite a few of whom were killed in action. Over a 100 years later, the town of Walhalla never forgets those who paid the supreme sacrifice. Here are a couple of images and sounds from today.

12.01.2022 It's been 218 days since the Railway carried its last paying passenger, and we are now getting seriously financially crippled by the loss of our passenger income. All the volunteers at WGR have been deeply affected by the closure, and can't wait to whistle away the next train. We have had a little bit of Government support (which has helped), but the bills just keep rolling in. So, today we are offering a Virtual Tour of the line from Thomson station to Walhalla just a few we...eks back - produced by our friends at Nanoo Nanoo, a local media production company at Traralgon. The Virtual Tour is free to watch - but if you want to help the Railway survive and recover, we encourage you to make a fully tax-deductible donation to keep us on the rails. There are two ways to help: 1. Use the online donation form @ https://www.walhallarail.com.au/donations/ 2. Send a cheque or money order with your name and address to the Walhalla Goldfields Railway, 2 Main Rd Victoria 3825. We know a lot of people out there are going through a tough time as well - we are thinking of you! #visitgippsland #visitwalhalla

11.01.2022 Trains restart on Wednesday! We are only running the 11am and 1pm trains on Wednesday 4th, Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th. After that, we're back to the normal timetable. Trains will run from Walhalla station to Thomson Station and return, passengers won't be able to alight and the trip will take 45 minutes. Because of COVID-compliant rules, we are restricted to an absolute maximum of 50 per train - so please try and book online to secure seats. Once each train is full, that's it. We are really looking to the 11am train departing on Wednesday. Don't forget your face masks!

03.01.2022 This Wednesday 11 November we will take a moment to remember the fallen. Remembrance Day marks the end of World War 1 in 1918 - quite a few young men started their long journey at Walhalla station to enlist in the armed forces and fight overseas. If you are in Walhalla - please join us for this event and if you wish, take a train ride afterwards. Make a prior booking on our website ... www.walhallarail.com.au. to ensure you get a seat. #visitgippsland #vistbawbaw #visitwalhalla
