21.01.2022 Following on from their award at last year's Laksa Festival, Cold Rock Darwin have been innovating once again with another of Darwin's iconic flavours. Salty Plums are a dried plum (aka prune) that have been cured in a salt-sugar mixture that has a salty-sweet liquorice-like flavour. (Think: Dutch liquorice). We have to admit they are an acquired taste, however as a mix-in for one of Cold Rock's smooth and creamy made-on-site icecream flavours, the Salty Plum would give you a taste of old Darwin! Mmmmmm....

21.01.2022 It's just over two weeks since the Territory Tourism Voucher was released... have you been a Territorian yet? We'd love to hear what you have done, or are planning to do... ...

20.01.2022 Happy Picnic Day! Picnic Day has been a public holiday in the N.T. ever since the late 1800s though it wasn't until the 1930s that the first Monday of August was designated for the annual holiday. Originally, Picnic Day was when the North Australia Railway workers would bundle the family off to Adelaide River for their Railway Picnic. The day was suspended during WWI but celebrated once again by Union workers in the 1930s. Post-WWII, the North Australian Workers Union, and th...en the Darwin Trades and Labor Council, oversaw the worker's picnic, enlisting public bodies and local businesses to cover the cost of transport, food and preparation of the location, such as Howard Springs or Berri Springs, for the influx of attendees. Nowadays, the Picnic Day long weekend is dominated by the Darwin Cup Carnival.

03.01.2022 60 years ago, an unassuming building on Knuckey St, was opened by the then Mayor of Darwin - the CWA Rest Rooms. In the late 1950s, the local branch of the Country Women's Association (C.W.A) lobbied for amenities for women shopping and doing business in Darwin. The Federal Government would not provide funds, as the Association was under control of the Queensland branch and the Queensland body was not interested in funding the venture. This was the impetus for forming the CWA... NT and the ladies went on to raise the finance to purchase and build a Rest Room where women were able to change and feed their babies in comfort. The building was serviced and maintained by volunteers for the next 5 decades. Overlooking Tamarind Park, the building has survived Cyclone Tracy and proudly displays its heritage. It is now home to a friendly gelateria.

01.01.2022 The jam session is on! Get down to the Botanic Gardens to enjoy the vibe.
