12.01.2022 Being in the construction industry I know of fellow brothers and have had mates that have committed suicide due to the everyday struggles of lack of work, financial issues and stress related to the industry. We lost a close mate named Jacob who was in the construction industry and tragically took his precious life way to early, so this subject really hits us hard and makes us want to continue working hard and making a change! To see the amount of causes and foundations that k...eep growing everyday to support and help the industry is an amazing feeling! What most people dont realise is workmates/teams and large crews all form a brotherhood. We all work together sometimes 14hrs a day, 5 days a week and that is excluding the weekends. We spend most of our hours and days with these guys and end up forming a close bond that keeps the industry going. We all work as a team and work tirelessly to complete projects in a time frame. Did you know? Suicide is the leading cause of death in Australian men aged 15 to 44 and men are three times more likely than women to self-harm and three times more likely to take their own lives. Six Australian men take their lives each day and shockingly, the number of suicides increased by 9 per cent from 2016 to 2017. That's 2017, 2 years later and we could only imagine the rise. Construction is meant to be a tough man industry where your feelings and thoughts are not thought of, but in reality there are alot of guys struggling. TradeMutt and their shirts have been amazing, I go to Bunnings wearing mine and the amount of people who laugh at you is astonishing. But 99% of these people laugh and then ask why? Once explained in depth to them they are on board and I always finish the conversation with "see this shirt did start a conversation". All I ask is that our brothers ask everyone "ARE YOU OK" even though we may look tough, we all have a heart and know what it's like to loose someone close to us. And we together need to help each other and make sure our brothers are with us every step of the way! So to all our Brothers who have left an empty place on our team we say "may you rest in peace and continue building the way" R.I.P Jacob
03.01.2022 Keeping up with your deck! With the warmer summer months and Christmas period coming up, your deck will be the main hub of your house for entertaining and socialising! But what if your deck is looking like it needs a facelift and you really want to give the wow factor when hosting events? Well at Walkers Construction QLD we have come up with a couple of easy tips to help you get the results and maintain the up-keep of your deck. ... 1- PRESSURE CLEANING DECKS: Using a pressure cleaner can be another great way to clean up your deck. However, be careful with pressure cleaner's as depending upon the age of your deck, they can splinter the wood and remove the protective coating. 2- ANIMAL DROPPINGS: In Queensland we all experience various wildlife/domestic animal droppings on our decks. Maintain your deck by removing, and hosing off, animal droppings as often as you can. This will help prevent them from staining the timber it gets worse the longer they stay. 3- INSPECTION OF YOUR DECK: Take the time to walk around your deck and check for any loose nails, screws or boards. Replace any damaged screws or nails, a nifty tip is taking a photo of your deck and circling each area you find a loose item on your phone, that way when it comes to resecuring you have a quick guide to return to! 4- BALUSTRADES/ HANDRAILS: While you are inspecting for loose nails and screws be sure to check your handrails surrounding your deck/ stairs to ensure they are stable and secure, signs to look for include; - Mould/ Rotting - Timber splits/ cracks - Peeling/ flaking paint - Separation With these easy to follow tips, you can start to get your deck ready for the busy period and be confident that when your guests step out they will be asking you how you do it! Keep an eye out for more tips from us on a variety of subjects to help you maintain your property and assets!
02.01.2022 Your property and fire safety! With the current conditions we are experiencing across SE Queensland and the greater Queensland area we know that this is a scary stage for many residents! WE THANK the local and volunteer fire fighters, ambos and police for the countless hours and efforts put into fighting the fires wherever you may be! Some tips to ensure your property isnt a ticking fire bomb and to ensure you can do your part to help include;... DRAINS/ GUTTERS- Please check all your gutters and down pipes. The main factor of fires is embers and with the lack of wet weather any natural waste in gutters/ down pipes is dry and poses a fire risk. PROPERTY MAINTENANCE- Walk around your yard, any dead tree branches/ built up leaves create a fire hazard, eliminate these by walking your backyard and identifying any hazards, removing these factors can reduce the fire fuel. FIRE BREAKS- Live on acreage or a large property? Grab your lawn mower and mow down the perimeter of your property around 5m wide. This creates a dense long and wide spot of no fuel for a fire. - KEEP UPDATED- With the apps and notifications we have available to us, please keep an eye on your local warnings and fire issues. These keep you up to date on weather/ fire emergencies and detail whether to leave or not. Remember if an emergency personal comes knocking at your door. Please listen to their instructions and follow as they are here to help and support. WE at Walkers Construction QLD thank every emergency personal working tirelessly to protect our communities, homes, loved ones and wildlife! The effort and courage to fight these fires and have a win is not unnoticed! And the QUEENSLAND spirit that we all are showing, tells us that we are all in for the fight! ONE FOR ALL, ALL FOR ONE!
