24.01.2022 Recent update on Vinny Man, he has been a superstar the last few training sessions! I have now introduced both saddle and bridle which he has accepted reall...y well. He can now walk and trot with bend in a circle with both saddle and bridle, and is well accustomed to the flag and streamer stick. And we were doing this while it was blowing a gale, so wind is no problem now that he’s a confident, trusting boy! My favourite thing so far is that he now knows that when I stand on the mounting block, it’s time to side up next to it in preparation to be mounted. I have introduced weight into the stirrup on both sides and started introducing swinging my leg over! Knowing what he was like when I first started working with him, this is a huge achievement in itself. Even though he needs some more time to become balanced on the circle before I introduce a rider into the mix, I feel like I will be riding the fiery redhead in no time! 11.01.2022 Rider Preparation with Vinny I think it is very important that before getting on a horse for the first time, that there are a few buttons installed to make t...he transition from groundwork to riding a pleasant and safe one, for everyone involved. In the clips from yesterday’s training session, I am focusing on being very up close and personal with Vinny, like a rider will be. No social distancing in this instance! This includes: Jumping up and down next to him and not being careful about it, like I would be mounting from the ground. Wrapping my arm around his body and leaning right to against him whilst moving, as this is where my seat and legs will be interacting with him. Getting forward transitions with pressure with my hand where my leg would be, and more importantly, getting him comfortable with that pressure still being there at a faster gait, preparing him for leg aids and a rider’s leg. Leaning and resting my full weight on him at a standstill, in preparation for my first sit. Whilst I do this, I also shift my weight around and touch him all over his other side so he gets used to me being there from all angles. Of course, these are some of the final groundwork steps and I have prepared him well beforehand to be able to handle this up close pressure

06.01.2022 DESENSITISATION This is my client’s horse Banjo, who I am working with to improve his reactions to new environments and situations, especially when there are ...different sounds involved. Amanda and I have been working together to try and get him more comfortable being out of his comfort zone, and to trust and follow the handler’s feel. Using groundwork techniques such as approach and retreat, pressure and release, making sure he had a good forwards button installed, and patience being the most important, Banjo was able to overcome his fear and trust in what I was asking. This resulted in him eventually walking over the tarp multiple times with me, and Amanda, and even being able to stop on the tarp (being flight animals who naturally like to be on the move, this is a hard one). Even though he was still quite worried about the situation, it was nice to see the progression between Banjo saying NO and reacting at the start of the session, to thinking and being willing to TRY at the end. It is completely normal for horses to be tense and worried in new environments, but if we can help them find a way to relax and think about the situation, we are on the right track. : Tom Taylor Photography

06.01.2022 MOUNTING Does your horse not stand still at the mounting block? Or does it walk off when you’re half way on? What about when you’re out and about and you can’...t get your horse to side pass up to something so you can jump on stress free? Does your horse instantly tense up and become an anxious wreck the moment you put your foot in the stirrup to jump on? Although these are all very common issues, mounting doesn’t have to be difficult and stressful! It can be as easy as this, with your horse WANTING to be apart of it! If anyone would like help to get their horse to become happier with mounting, and make it a stress free experience, please get in contact with me!

02.01.2022 Dealing with Reactive Horses Vinny regularly goes into flight mode or his reactive side of his brain rather than thinking mode when he gets worried about ...something Even though this is actually quite a normal reaction for a prey animal, it can become frustrating and dangerous. I’ve found so far with his training that the key to dealing with this situation is by ignoring the behavior and not reacting negatively to it, then taking back control by redirecting the behavior into something he already knows, and in turn rewarding the good behavior and actually teaching him how to reach the thinking side of his brain. There is no point trying to train a horse while they are in their reactive state because they will not retain the information. By instilling a relaxation cue into him (for him it’s throwing the rope over his back), I am able to take control of the situation much more quickly, and bring him back into his thinking side of his brain where he actually begins to learn and process what I am trying to teach him If anyone is interested, I am thinking of writing a blog post on how take of dealing with reactive horses, so feel free to let me know if anyone is interested
