18.01.2022 look out for wildlife people! Animal Road toll . Native animals do not just come out at night ! Please slow down in forested areas including forested road sides. As locals we tend to know the animal crossing areas and the habits of our native dwellers.... Kangaroos and feral deer jump out in front of us ..wallabies watch and listen and step the wrong way, Koalas are dreamily walking down the road , wombats invariably follow regular crossing areas. Possums are scampering across . It seems a though that the road toll is nearly as high as when the area was swarming with tourists . Native animal rescue centres are under a lot of pressure and locals continue to be distressed by the number of injuries and fatalities . At the moment there are a lot of young birds sitting on the roads presumably attracted by pollen or insects , who dont seem too alert when it comes to flying from approaching traffic . Please volunteer to slow down to 80km in areas of habitat during the day and Max 70km (some say 60) if passing through known animal areas at night . We encounter wildlife because we still have some ! When we slow down it is amazing what we see. Drive slowly and treat yourself to a viewing of the Wildlife . for injured animals : Sue Moore Tarwin Lower Wildlife Shelter Contact number 0429016695 . Anyone able to assist Sue with cage cleaning is always very welcome . Sue is now registered as a tax deductible charity . Contact Sue for details . See more
17.01.2022 W is for Walkerville 'Melba' & Mac'. Walkerville's work-horses. When The boat arrived from Melbourne, the whole population (of Walkerville) would turn out day ...or night to see Melba and Mac, the old draught horses, pull their flat-topped trolleys of bagged lime along the tramway lines to the ships side... Now just one lonely pole remains on the beach (photos 2006 & 2017)... In 1910 this pole was part of Melba & Mac's wharf: It's a bit hard to see which horse is on the wharf (or are there two side-by-side?). [Reference: Walkabout Magazine August 1959]

11.01.2022 Walkerville South this evening. Mother and calf, this is the calf showing off. We think the calf was born overnight or early this morning, not much movement from the calf this morning, but as the day progressed, it was doing tail slaps, learning to breach, then constantly breaching. Pretty special.
