24.01.2022 Morning All, Trojans trek is looking for a few good men. If you have a client who maybe interested in attending please pass this on to them. Below is a short description of the trek. Trojans Trek is a peer led, wilderness based program. The next trek is in the Flinders Ranges 13-18th September. Please note trek is that in the mind. We introduce participants to the idea of examining their way of thinking, their beliefs and values - potentially leading to alternate and health...ier set of behaviour and coping mechanisms. Brendon Barry is facilitator on the trek along with being the point of contact (along with one other bloke, Paul Wilton from SA). The trek in South Australia is for male defence and frontline service veterans who over the period of their career have been impacted by trauma and/or chronic stress. This upcoming trek initially was aimed at those who worked on the firefront at the start of the year however due to COVID and travel restrictions we have opened it back up to all veterans. 20.01.2022 This coming Friday 14th. August the Walkerville RSL Sub Branch at 98 Walkerville Terrace, Walkerville will remember the 75th. Anniversary of VP (Victory in the Pacific) Day on Saturday 15th. August during the Stand Fast incorporating the Ode, which will be at 1230hrs. VP Day, also referred to as VJ (Victory over Japan) Day, is celebrated on the 15th. August. This date commemorates Japans acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender on the 14th. August 19...45. For Australians, it meant that World War 11 was finally over. The following day, 15 August, was gazetted by the Australian Government as a public holiday being generally referred to as VP Day. Vice President Richard Trotman-Dickenson AM will give a brief overview of World War 11 ahead of the Stand Fast which will include the Ode and One Minutes Silence. One of a dwindling number of remaining World War 11 veterans, 99 year old Mrs Rena Pascoe (ex RAAF) will recite the Ode as a poignant tribute to all who served both in Australia and overseas during World War 11 and in particular, the 27,000 plus who died on active service. Mrs Pascoe, a well known resident of the general Walkerville community and longtime member of the Walkerville RSL Sub Branch, is a living memory of a unique piece of Australian World War 11 military history. As a wireless radio operator, should Australia and its allies, in particular the United States navy, have lost the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942 and Australia then being in imminent threat of invasion, she was on standby to send out the invasion code signal, MXY 550. Fortunately, with victory in the Coal sea, this never had to be sent. The other surviving Sub Branch World War 11 member, 96 year old Flt Sergeant David Jarvis (ex RAAF) saw active service in New Guinea as a radio operator in a DC-3 (biscuit bomber), particularly during the Battle of Milne Bay in 1942, resupplying Australian troops from the air whilst under direct fire from surrounding Japanese positions. Following the Stand Fast a barbeque meal will be served with full bar facilities available.

18.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE Thursday, 2 July 2020 VETERANS VIEWS SOUGHT TO SHAPE FUTURE ENGAGEMENT... VETERANS and their families are being asked to provide their views on how the ex-service community is consulted and engaged, and how this can be improved. Minister for Veterans Affairs Darren Chester said the views of the serving and ex-service community are essential as the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) continues to change and to ensure veterans and their families can access the services they need, when they need them. The Government is committed to putting veterans and their families first, and part of this is consulting with the right groups in the ex-service community and seeking a broad range of views on services, support and commemoration, Mr Chester said. Along with DVA, ex-service organisations have played a critical role in supporting veterans and their families for more than 100 years, and this review ensures their changing views and requirements are heard. I encourage all those in the ex-service community to participate and provide their feedback. The National Consultation Framework has been in place since 2009 and is reviewed every three years in consultation with the ex-service community. It aims to facilitate the needs of veterans and their families are voiced and listened to by DVA, through forum structures, membership of various forums, appropriate representation on fora and capacity of member organisations. Repatriation Commissioner Don Spinks, who is responsible for Veteran Engagement at DVA, said everyones suggestions will be heard and will play an important role informing the future consultation model. This review is essential to giving veterans a voice so I encourage everyone in the serving and ex-service community to get involved and have their say, Commissioner Spinks said. Further information on the review, including participating in the survey, is available on the DVA website. They survey will be available until 26 July 2020 with the final report expected to be completed in late 2020. 09.01.2022 Queen Elizabeth II has approved the posthumous awarding of the Victoria Cross to WWII hero Edward Teddy Sheean, His Excellency, General the Honourable David John Hurley AC DSC (Retd), Governor-General of Australia, has announced. This comes after Prime Minister Scott Morrison recommended the Ordinary Seaman be awarded Australias highest military honour. The 18-year-old had less than two years at sea and was serving on the minesweeper HMAS Armidale when it came under heavy ...attack from Japanese aircraft off the coast of what is now Timor-Leste in 1942. Sheean is recorded as helping launch life rafts before returning to his anti-aircraft gun to fire at enemy aircraft that were strafing his shipmates as they floundered in the water, despite the order having been given to abandon ship. Witness accounts from the day have him firing as the ship sank. He was never seen again. The Governor-General said he had relayed the news to Sheeans nephews earlier today, describing it as a momentous occasion for the family. "In my conversations with them, their pride and emotion was very evident," he said. Furthermore, that many Australians had only heard Teddys story for the first time in the last couple of days. "A young man serving his nation who chose certain death over the chance of survival to try to save his mates who were in the water," he said. "Many of us have really been taken back by his courage, his commitment to his mates and his sacrifice. "The story is inspiring and should inspire us all." The Governor General additionally commented that it was an "especially poignant time" with the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II approaching. "In remembering Teddy, acknowledging his service and honouring his courage, we also preserve the legacy of a generation that has served and shaped our nation," with a ceremony to be held in the coming months.

08.01.2022 Korean War Outbreak On the 25th June, 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea and from June 1950 to July 1953 the Korean Peninsula and the waters around it provided the landscape and seascape for the first war to involve the United Nations. This war inflicted a very personal cost on the Korean people and on the sailors, soldiers and airmen and their families from the nations who came to Korea to help fight Communist aggression.... To remember the cost Australia bore for its participation, the Consulate-General of the Republic of Korea in Sydney presents this exhibition (refer online) to mark the 70th anniversary of the outbreak that tragic conflict and to commemorate the courage and sacrifice of 17,000 Australians, 339 of whom died on active service and over 1,500 who suffered wounds, during that war. 05.01.2022 From the Command Post: I refer to the Coronavirus and the various Government enactments introduced to limit its spread and thereby, ultimate containment.... I advise that as a consequence, your committee voted last Friday to cease operations at the Sub Branch, effective immediately. This decision relates to our normal Friday activities and regular hall functions, in addition to our annual ANZAC Day Dawn Service, following ANZAC Day luncheon and afternoon entertainment. (I note that there will be a number of ANZAC Day Dawn Services via TV or streamed live to enable you to participate by viewing from home, a list of these will be confirmed closer to ANZAC Day .) This decision will be reviewed in May in accordance with then Government advice, however I do not anticipate an early re-opening of the Sub Branch. I wish your families and you all the very best in health and life through these very difficult and troubling times; and will keep in contact through regular email bulletins.
