23.01.2022 Helping support a worthwhile voluntary org; a good initiative for bushwalking and the environment.
20.01.2022 Nice day for a good walk: Relive! video captures happy club group enjoying the Darkin Ridge - Beraking Campsite walk (good as either a day walk or an overnighter at the Bibb. Track campsite). Thanks Ras.
19.01.2022 Kakadu Tourism Master Plan is online for public comment, closing 13 November. It's a 10-year Aus. Govt. strategy to grow tourism in the national park, including... ecolodges, a family holiday park and safari camps, adventure tourism, wellness retreats and luxury river cruises, Cultural Centre facilities, new mountain biking trails, a zipline from the top of Jim Jim Falls to the plunge pool There’s also a Heritage Trail planned to highlight some of the historical sites in the park; BUT hiking / bushwalking hardly gets a mention and there's seemingly no vision for the future of wilderness bushwalking in the park. See Parks Australia website for the Plan, plus the online survey closing 13 Nov. Have your say! See more
18.01.2022 Another future nature tourism (Jarrahdale trail town) bushwalking opportunity to be lost to bauxite mining? Balmoral Track-Three Mountains Walk (2-day circuit) now on WalkGPS ! This 29km circuit enables walkers to enjoy arguably the best section of walking in the northern jarrah forest within the Monadnocks Conservation Park and also to spend a night camping at the popular Monadnocks Campsite on the Bibbulmun Track, returning via Balmoral Track to the start point at the hist...oric Balmoral POW Camp near Jarrahdale. An excellent walk in springtime, when the jarrah forest comes alive with wildflower colour especially along the Balmoral Track. Sadly the whole area west of Albany Hwy, including the Balmoral Track and other nice old forestry tracks through mature forest, are seriously threatened by Alcoa’s current proposal to commence extensive strip-mining here by 2025. Perhaps just 3-4 more years to enjoy. 18.01.2022 Communities move to stop Alcoa's ongoing mining expansions Dwellingup, Jarrahdale and Serpentine community groups, supported by the WA Forest Alliance and The Wilderness Society, came together at Parliament House last Tuesday 10th Nov. to present a petition strongly rejecting Alcoa’s current expansion proposal and to call for the remaining mature jarrah forests to be securely protected. The groups’ immediate concern is to protect mature jarrah forests near Dwellingup and Jar...rahdale from the extensive clearing that looks set to continue for about another 50 years within Alcoa’s 7000 sq km mining lease in the Darling Range on Perth's doorstep. Only about 15% of forests within the lease are protected within existing and proposed national parks. This is the best opportunity Western Australians have had in a generation to deal with the juggernaut that is bauxite mining in our precious jarrah forests, said Jess Beckerling, convener of the WA Forest Alliance. Alcoa’s massive proposed expansion is before the EPA and will be subject to a full public environmental review, so the spotlight is shining brightly on the issue now and the community is rising up in opposition, said Ms Beckerling. If approved, the current proposed expansions will extend the overall gross approved envelope of mining operations around the Huntly area alone by ~280 sq km, increasing the total Huntly envelope affected by a mosaic of past and future mining to around 900 sq km. See WalkGPS 'Bauxite Mining' page below (https://bit.ly/38KomZP) for an overview of how the ongoing strip-mining operations will also progressively destroy traditional hiking / bushwalking opportunities across most of the state forest areas of the Perth region within Alcoa's huge mining lease. The currently proposed expansions will affect the Balmoral Walk Trail, a section of the Bibbulmun Track and the Munda Biddi MBT, plus a number of customary off-track bushwalking areas. 14.01.2022 A focus on disappearing and endangered traditional bushwalking opportunities close to Perth. See today's Sunday Times for full article; also comments on the mistreatment and neglect of Wandoo National Park.
12.01.2022 Moons Crossing, Warren River, near Pemberton today - Enjoyable first recce this afternoon in Moons Crossing area, including quick walk in to Warren Campsite on Bibbulmun Track. Still lots of nice belts of mature karri forest here despite the recent past intensive logging of old growth forest in the area. Excellent potential for a circuit walk for HikeWest's ongoing "Adventurous Walks of the SW" project. Plus pleasant morning warm-up walk on the popular 10.5km Warren River Loop Walk from the Bicentennial Tree, Warren National Park, also near Pemberton. Good to see electronic (CC) payment machine now installed for cash-free payment of national park visitor fee for those without a parks pass.
11.01.2022 For those seeking one of the most rewarding adventurous walks WA has to offer to experienced walkers ...
09.01.2022 Great to catch up with the many Perth Bushwalker Club members who gathered for the unveiling this morning of a new sign at Eagle View Lookout in John Forrest National Park celebrating the generous voluntary contributions of the club members who initiated, planned and built the Eagle View Trail ~23 years ago. Today it's still the most popular developed day walk trail in the Perth region and continues to introduce many to the joys of bushwalking.

08.01.2022 ...also good to see another SA reservoir opening up to recreation. - Meanwhile our outer water catchments here in WA 'must' be kept free of trails and other infrastructure, and so - very conveniently - give the bauxite miners unimpeded access for their relentless expansion through our State forests and around our reservoirs.
07.01.2022 Banyowla South Walk - Ras may pack his bathers next time he does this walk? ; see Relive video Thanks for the 5 stars Ras; I thought you'd enjoy it especially with the streams still flowing!
04.01.2022 Timeline for release of Alcoa's Environmental Review Document published. Looks like those of us interested in reviewing will need to keep next Xmas holidays free. But who could be surprised by that Dec-Jan timing?
04.01.2022 Dwellingup-Jarrahdale forests - The Dwellingup Discovery Forest, Save our Jarrah and WA Forest Alliance groups have commenced a campaign to protect mature jarra...h forests near Jarrahdale and Dwellingup areas from further extensive clearing proposed as part of the ongoing expansions of bauxite strip-mining within Alcoa’s 7000 sq km lease in the Darling Range. They plan to present a petition at Parliament House on 10 November. The current proposed expansions will affect the Balmoral Walk Trail, a section of the Bibbulmun Track and the Munda Biddi MBT, plus a number of customary off-track bushwalking areas.
