25.01.2022 YEERAKINE ROCK WALKS Kondinin, WA Kondinin has a population of only 300 people and is located about 3 hours ESE of Perth WA. Yeerakine Rock is another 12 km fro...m town on the Williams - Kondinin Rd. There are two walking trails near the rock; the 1.8 km Bush Walk and the 1.35 km Rock Walk. Both trails start at the car park/picnic spot, but the Bush Trail heads off to your left and does a loop past jam, sheoak, sandalwood and salmon gums, while the Rock Trail veers right and takes you all the way to the top of Yeerakine Rock where you are rewarded with spectacular 360 degree views across the surrounding farmland. Both trails include informative story boards along the route explaining interesting facts about the surrounding bush and historical facts of how the rock was once used as a water catchment. The Bush Trail is all flat and although the Rock Trail has some steep sections, most people will manage the climb. 21.01.2022 HIPPOS YAWN TRAIL Hyden, WA This 1.7 km trail can be walked alone or combined with the Hyden Rock (Wave Rock) Trail, making a double loop of nearly 3 km.... The Hippos Yawn Trail is all flat and can easily be managed by most people. The first part of the trail follows the base of Wave Rock to the feature known as Hippos Yawn and then does a loop around through the bush to end back at the car park. It is fascinating to see how the vegetation changes along this trail. Back when the town was first established a stone wall was built along the top of the hill to channel water into a small dam to supply the town. This has resulted in the run off to the bush directly below the face of Wave Rock being reduced. As you get further along the trail towards Hippos Yawn, away from the water diversion, the bush becomes much greener and lush. When I visited last week (mid November) I could see that the wildflowers would have been stunning a few weeks earlier, but was delighted when I came across a huge patch of fresh yellow blooms. 15.01.2022 CERVANTES Another stunning West Australian beach only 2 hours north of Perth CDB on Indian Ocean Drive. There is a nice 3.6 km return walk trail along the coast... starting at Thirsty Point in town and heading south to Hansen Bay Lookout, that I'm keen to check out on my next trip north. The walk can be extended by following the road out to Lake Thetis and looping back into town. 11.01.2022 GNAMMA TRAIL Hyden, WA I recommend doing this 1.2 km loop trail before the longer Kalari Trail. The information boards along the Gnamma Trail provide heaps of i...nformation about the aboriginal people who used to live in the area and how they interacted with the natural environment. For example a gnamma hole is a natural depression in the rocks that collects water. The local aboriginal people would ensure these water holes were kept clean and maintained as a source of fresh drinking water. There are also reptile traps that can be seen along the trail.. Without the info boards I would have walked right past these features and not understood the significance of them. Later, when climbing to the top of the Humps on the Kalari Trail, I better understood the things I was observing around me. The Gnamma Trail is all flat and very easy to complete, but allow a good hour to stop and read the various story boards along the route. It is a great insight into the early interactions with the European settlers and the local indigenous population. To get there follow the signs from Hyden towards The Humps and Mulka's Cave for about 20 km. NOTE - The start of this trail is not well signed, but if you head to your right from Mulka's cave you will come to a fork in the trail. Keep to your left until you reach the second fork, head right and follow the signs from there. 08.01.2022 KALARI TRAIL Hyden WA The Kalari Trail was by far the highlight of my trip to Hyden. (And maybe Lake Magic; that pale green!)... Climbing Wave Rock is one of those things you have to do because, ... well ... just because. But, the Kalari Trail was much more challenging and rewarding. A mild sunny day was a bonus. I must confess, that due to my intense fear of heights, I didn't make it all the way to the top, but although I was a bit disappointed I was well pleased with my effort and rewarded with amazing views. I did also attempt the climb from the other side of the rock and was able to take in the views from that side as well. The summit would have been great because the views are full 360 deg from up there. If you get there, take a photo for me from the top. I highly recommend walking the nearby Gnamma Trail before attempting the Kalari. Take the time to read all of the interpretive panels as this knowledge was so enlightening, especially the understanding of gnamma holes and lizard traps and how the indigenous people used them. The trail is located about 20 km north of the tiny wheatbelt town of Hyden, nearly 4 hours SE of Perth. Follow the signs to The Humps from town. The full trail is a 1.8 km loop and moderately difficult. Make sure you wear good walking shoes or boots and carry plenty of drinking water. The flies were terrible when I was there recently (November) and my new $10 fly net was put to good use. Its easy to follow the trail and most of the time you can see the next trail marker a short way ahead. 07.01.2022 It's snake season in Perth! Have you seen any sssslithering around your area? Here are some vital tips from Bob Cooper Outback Survival on how to handle sna...ke bites and encounters. ? If you have room, remove yourself from the proximity of the snake as quickly or slowly as the situation dictates. If the snake is within striking distance (1/3rd of its length) remain perfectly still until the snake moves away. Don't make sudden movements Sudden weakness followed by collapse Shaking or twitching of muscles and difficulty blinking Vomiting Loss of bladder and bowel control Dilated pupils Paralysis Blood in urine ? Call triple-0 straight away Keep calm and stay completely still Don't wash the bite so the venom can be identified Have another person apply a firm compression bandage, moving upwards on the limb Mark the bite spot for doctors to identify Make a splint with something long and sturdy Don't elevate the limb above the heart, to help slow the spread of venom If you spot a snake on your property, call a snake handler to relocate it. 05.01.2022 HYDEN ROCK WALK (Wave Rock) Hyden, WA Most people have heard of Wave Rock located near the tiny rural community of Hyden, just over 3.5 hours ESE of Perth WA, b...ut what I didn't realize until visiting this week, is the rock is actually called Hyden Rock and Wave Rock is just one feature of it. Either way, a visit to Wave Rock is well worth the drive and there are several trails worth checking out. Hyden Rock Walk is a 1.25 km trail that starts at the Wave Rock carpark and does a loop up to the top of the wave and back down again. There are some steps to navigate and a couple of very steep sections where a chain is provided to assist hikers up and down. From the top of the wave you can see for miles out across the surrounding farmland, bush and salt lakes. Look out for the lime green of Lake Magic. On a warm day you will see colourful dragon lizards sunning themselves on the rocks. The map indicates you descend from the rock near the trail from the carpark and there was a sign along the trail indicating you go straight ahead down a rather steep rock face or follow the barrier along the crest of the wave back to the steps at the dam. This left me with a dilemma.... All the signs said keep off the rock barrier and the route indicated you had to cross it, plus the rock was too steep at that point for my old knees. The alternative was to follow the barrier back to the steps at the dam, but this took you right across the crest of the wave and I am terrified of heights. Having decided my knees wouldn't tolerate the steep slope, I chose to follow the barrier. I have rarely been so scared in my entire life. In the end I just looked at my feet and concentrated on putting one foot in front of the other. it didn't help that the rock was on quite an angle at this point and it made me feel more like I was going to fall over the edge. But I SUCCEEDED in getting to the other side and down off the rock!!! So I will leave it to you to decide how you mange the last part of the trail. I guess a third option would be to go back the way you came. The TrailsWA map appears to take you along the scary barrier route. You can extend this route by adding a loop to Hippos Yawn and along the base of the wave to the Breakers and back. http://trailswa.com.au/trails/hyden-rock-hyden Trails WA Explore Parks WA

03.01.2022 YARLOOP HERITAGE WALK TRAIL Yarloop, WA. For me this was a somewhat emotional 3.4 km walk around the historic town of Yarloop, 1.5 hours south of Perth.... My connection to Yarloop goes back some 40 years and I had family and friends living in the area when the 2016 fires went through. I still remember the night we sat watching the pictures and stories on the internet of homes and other buildings in Yarloop engulfed with flames as the fire ripped through the town. Sadly many of the historic buildings were lost or damaged in the fires and I actually found it quite distressing, because I couldn't remember what some of it used to look like. I guess that just makes it more important to preserve the memory of what once was. The entire trail is on a sealed path, making it suitable for everyone, including those in wheel chairs and pushing prams. There is a lovely shady park with a children's playground and toilets part way along the trail. The one remaining store in town, doubles as the Post Office and coffee shop and makes the perfect place to grab a hot coffee or cold drink at the end of your walk. Maps are available at the Yarloop Community Resource Centre or the Harvey Visitor Centre NOTE - When you get to the War memorial, cross the road and continue along the path, behind the memorial.
