These hyperkeratotic lesions have a central core of keratin which can cause pain and inflammation. They most often develop on the feet and toes or areas of bony prominence. They develop when the skin tries to protect an underlying area from injury, pressure, or rubbing. 02.01.2022 THE SKIN - YOUR BODYS BEST DEFENSE MECHANISM The skin is the largest organ of the body and is also the main barrier between the internal environment and the outside world protecting against a range of threats such as bacteria, virus and fungi. Most of this protection comes from the outer most layer of the epidermis the stratum corneum. The primary function of the skin is to act as a barrier. The skin provides protection from: mechanical impacts and pressure, variations in... temperature, micro-organisms, radiation and chemicals. Dry skin is one of the major enemies to healthy skin. Dry skin is usually harmless but when its not cared for, dry skin may lead to: Atopic dermatitis (eczema). If youre prone to develop this condition, excessive dryness can lead to activation of the disease, causing redness, cracking and inflammation. Infections. Dry skin may crack, allowing bacteria to enter, causing infections. Keeping our skin healthy and moist helps keep this barrier strong... Using a proper skin care regimen daily can help preserve this important protective layer. So, what are the main causes of dry skin? For most sufferers, the cause is physiological and not pathological i.e. the way we live rather than any given disease. Lack of moisture is the most common cause of cracked heels. Skin underneath your feet is often dry, rough, and chapped. Exposing footwear can allow fat under heel to expand sideways & pressure. Poorly Fitting shoes, standing for a long time. Poor circulation resulting in claudication or pain in the calves.
