House designs like all other designs are the intellectual property of the person who created the design and are protected under Copyright laws. If you use a design that you have downloaded from the web or have taken a design from one builder and have had other builders quote or build the design, you may be in breech of Copyright laws and could face serious legal ramifications. Having plans drawn specifically for you by an Arch...itect or Building Designer is often a safe bet (and a better way to go for renovations and extensions), but it's still a good idea to check your legal rights over the plans. You may have full use rights, or may have only been provided access under a 'licence'. This is a tricky area that can cause you a lot of grief and wasted time and money. But it’s easily avoided.
