25.01.2022 FRNSW COVID-19 UPDATE There are a few changes that have taken place with the way Fire and Rescue NSW Firefighters operate that you may notice. We hope you understand and can help us through the next few weeks.... Some of the changes include: We are cancelling all non essential community engagements so we won't be able to visit your school or childcare centre to pass on fire safety messages for a while. If you visit a fire station for any non life threatening issues we are not going to be able to let you in. You may notice fire trucks at emergencies with fire fighters sitting inside. We are minimising the amount of fire fighters contact with the community. If you see us sitting in our fire trucks and not getting out this is not us being rude. Feel free to give us a wave from a distance as we'll be more than happy to wave back. We won't be able to show your kids our fire truck and let them sit in it for a while. And unfortunatley we won't be able to shake your hands for a while. Behind the scenes we are doing a lot of hard work to continously decontaminate our trucks, uniforms and fire stations to ensure us and our community are protected. It will still be business as usual for our firefighters, as we are prepared for anything.

21.01.2022 Residents may have seen our truck out in the local area today performing hydrant checks. One of the biggest problems firefighter faces is finding and accessing fire hydrants. Part of the role of a firefighter is to inspect fire hydrants to make sure they are ready to go when needed.... Here is a before and after of some Hydrants that were found in our area. Residents are reminded in an emergency crews will use these points for water. We don't ask you to open them to check but do advise to keep them clear of over grown grass and do not park vehicles over them.

18.01.2022 ST FLORIAN’S DAY | Today marks St Florian’s Day - also known as International Firefighters Day. St Florian is the patron saint of firefighters. Today we celebrate the dedicated men and women who work each day to protect you, the irreplaceable. Whether it’s rescuing you from a car crash, providing emergency medical care to your loved one or humanitarian relief to your community - our firefighters do so much more than fight fire. We are #PreparedForAnything.... Today, we also remember all firefighters who have lost their lives while serving others. While we can’t celebrate this important day the way we usually would; we join together in commemoration, as we stay apart. #FRNSW #ProtectTheIrreplaceable #MoreThanFire #OurPeople

11.01.2022 2019 Winter fire data shows that almost 25% of smoke alarms did not operate in house fires. Fire moves fast, and working smoke alarms are one of the best early warning signs. Don’t risk it, test it. Working smoke alarms help save lives. #PreparedForAnything #ProtectTheIrreplaceable

03.01.2022 Shortly after 4am this morning our crew were responded to a reported house fire in Maryland. On arrival our crew were faced with the property fully involved in fire. Thankfully the family managed to get out safely but the house was totally destroyed. The property did have working smoke alarms that did alarm. 484 Wallsend crew would like to thank our neighbouring stations as well as NSW Police and NSW Ambulance for their assistance. This serves as a timely reminder to check the operation of your smoke alarm and change your smoke alarm battery. Working smoke alarms save lives.

01.01.2022 Just heartbreaking Two weeks after his dad was tragically killed in a fire truck crash, little Harvey Keaton has accepted a bravery award on behalf of his RFS... hero dad. Geoffrey Keaton was one of two firefighters who lost their lives fighting fires on the 19th of December 2019. RFS Commissioner Fitzsimmons awarded his son with the posthumous Commissioner’s Commendations for Bravery and Service award, while his devastated family watched on. 01.01.2022 How do we help protect communities from the devastating impacts of flooding? With our super-sized water vacuum. We've sent our bulk water transfer system called... 'HyTrans' to the Mid-North coast to help relieve flood-affected communities. This amazing piece of equipment is designed to move up to 8,000 litres of water a minute! It also carries 1.5km of hose to take the water away, helping to reduce the impact of flooding. Our HyTrans has been in action all summer, supplying water to fight bushfires. It is now ready to assist with floods, and is one way we are helping to #ProtectTheIrreplaceable. #MoreThanFire #Rescue #PreparedForAnything #FRNSW
