21.01.2022 Sisters Harriet and Helena Scott were probably the premier natural history illustrators working in NSW Australia in the last half of the 19th century. 17.01.2022 Natural history illustration has long been an effective way of conveying the culture of a particular time and place. Joseph Lycett (c.17751828) was an English convict artist who was sent to Australia for forgery and served time in Newcastle NSW. While others were sentenced to hard labour, Lycett’s duties involved painting the scenes of everyday life in the new colony. His detailed watercolours offer a rare glimpse of Aboriginal culture at the time; the ways Indigenous people hunted and gathered food, their customs and social hierarchy. #australianhistory #localhistory #HSIE #creativearts #wallythree
