21.01.2022 Just on two years ago Abbotsford and Kew residents were promised a new bridge to replace the no longer fit for purpose one. Much has happened in the previous two years, including Salta commencing construction of The Parkhouse Apartments. This year has unfortunately seen the COVID19 pandemic impacting literally every aspect of our daily lives. Due to restrictions, people are rediscovering their local areas and changing the way they travel locally. Abbotsford and Kew residents ...need certainty about future planning of this vital connection across the Yarra River. We have waited long enough. Walmer Street Bridge Coalition want to bring your attention to an important issue that impacts the bridge and approaches. At the following link there are amended plans for shared paths and approach ramps to the existing bridge:... 607 - 627 VICTORIA STREET, ABBOTSFORD Permit number: DP1500043.02. The responsible authority won't make a decision before: 30 July 2020 https://www.yarracity.vic.gov.au//a/2020/06/24/dp150004302 These plans illustrate narrow switchback shared paths widths of less three metres that are subpar for AustRoads and VicRoads specifications. 10.01.2022 From Yarra City Council: Changes to access at Walmer Street, Abbotsford https://www.yarracity.vic.gov.au//changes-to-access-at-wal Access to part of the Capital City Trail in Abbotsford will be changing temporarily for pedestrians and cyclists during June 2020. ... Why is access changing? Ministerial approval was granted on 27 January 2017 for the Development Plan DP1500043 at 607-627 Victoria Street, Abbotsford including the reconstruction of Walmer Street, Abbotsford into Walmer Plaza. Icon Constructions are ready to commence the works and to ensure safety, a temporary redirection of a section of the trail is required during the works. Heritage Victoria (HV) has provided approval for temporary ramp works within the Walmer Street Bridge exclusion overlay. When are the works happening? For safety reasons, access from the riverbank path and Walmer Street Bridge to Victoria Street, Abbotsford will be closed between: - 10:00am until 1:00pm 1 June 2020 Traffic management will be present to ensure safety during the works. Access reopens from: - 1:01pm 1 June 2020 until 24 November 2020 and will be via a temporary enclosed footpath and ramp. Walmer Plaza is scheduled for completion at the next stage. Questions? Darebin City Council and Moreland City Council worked together with the locals for this great outcome. Now wouldn't it be equally fantastic for Yarra City Council, City of Boroondara and Victorian Government News to provide resolution to replace the failing Walmer Street Bridge between Abbo...tsford and Kew? . . . 07.01.2022 A Switchback ramp has been designed for Walmer St Bridge due to the bridge being nominated for a heritage listing. It extends an extraordinary 5 meters onto the landing at Yarra, plus 5m on each side of the bridge. The extent of this nomination, has forced Salta to design a substandard switchback bridge connection within the small envelope that sits outside of the nominated area. See image below. This has potential long term adverse impact on a shared path of regional signifi...cance, effectively creating a new Gipps Street Steps. Boroondara BUG (BBUG) has written to the Planning Minister today requesting he intervene in this matter. 06.01.2022 It's (well overdue) to replace Walmer Street Bridge! Sign and share the Change.org petition: https://www.change.org/p/richard-wynne-it-s-time-to-replace Walmer Street Bridge, located on the Yarra River, is long overdue to be replaced by a crossing for the changing needs of the Abbotsford and Kew areas.... For over thirty years there have been calls for the bridges replacement. The current situation cannot continue as the bridge is in poor condition, requires constant maintenance by City of Boroondara and Yarra City Council and is not longer fit for purpose. Over 3000 signatures were collected in 2018 for the bridges replacement in a petition presented to the Legislative Assembly of Victoria. In August 2018 the Andrews Labor Government commissioned a $200,000 scoping study and business case for upgrading the century-old Walmer St Bridge in Richmond. In 2020 we call upon the State Government of Victoria to commit, fund and build a replacement for the Walmer Street Bridge. . . . . . 05.01.2022 Yarra City Council Pedestrian and Cyclist Access Way Closure at Walmer Street, Abbotsford https://www.yarracity.vic.gov.au//pedestrian-and-cyclist-a Pedestrian and cyclist access near Walmer Street, Abbotsford will be restricted from Monday 13 January 2020.... Salta Properties (owners of the land) is required, as part of planning permission granted by the Minister of Planning, to undertake landscaping along the south side of the riverbank. This work is being undertaken by Icon. The construction work is significant, and requires closure of the embankment from Walmer Street to Shamrock Street. The track will be closed from 13 January 2020 and will reopen in November 2020. A ramp to the nearby switchback will also be temporarily closed in early 2020, to enable demolition of the onsite display suite directly abutting it. The ramp will be closed only when necessary and spotters will be present during these times to allow anyone that cannot use the stairs to access the ramp. At this stage, the ramp will be closed from 16 to 18 January, 20 to 25 January and 29 January to 5 February, from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and on Saturday from 9am to 3pm. Questions?
